The Power Of The Student In University Crisis Management Policy Development, Drew Reid

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

There are many forms of policy that University administrators create; a main portion of which addresses crises such as sexual assault violations, school shootings and suicide. The federal government has a role in the development of policy, which Title IX and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) demonstrate. Crisis Management Teams (CMT’s), comprised of teachers, administrators, and other university faculty are committees who, on behalf of the university, implement the policies written by the government. Where the issue occurs is the lack of student involvement on these committees. Why are the people who the policy is written for …

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

In the early 1930s, government officials from the local, state and federal level of the United States deported up to half a million Mexican and Mexican-Americans. How did government officials justify these repatriations? Beginning with the onset of the Great Depression, these deportations were designed to provide employment to out-of-work whites and to free up resources being spent on unemployed people of Mexican descent. Movies With Meaning: Crossing Disciplines In Cinema, Ashley Cotter

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

One might not realize that blockbuster movies can be used as an educational tool in the classroom setting to enhance the learning process. While these types of movies are not crafted as pedagogical tools, like animated, demonstrative video clips, there is educational value to be found in them. In more recent years, this is a practice that has been used in many classrooms. However, it is within the social sciences primarily that these blockbuster films are used to augment the understanding of concepts. Big films are rarely, if ever, used in the hard sciences to provide examples of concepts. How …

Terrorist Black Holes: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Melissa Divens

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

What factors within a region contribute to the host of a terrorist group? Rem Korteweg and David Ehrhardt begin to answer that question with the publishing of what they call “a first step in research aimed at uncovering terrorist sanctuaries”. Terrorist Black Holes: A Study into Terrorist Sanctuaries and Governmental Weakness (2005), identifies the concept of a Terrorist Black Hole, which is an area within a region that houses a terrorist group. While Korteweg concentrates on regions outside of NATO territory, I challenge his assumption for the absence of Terrorist Black Holes in the West by asking: What are the …

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

In the post 9/11 world countering terrorism has become a top United States foreign policy priority as well as the subject of much scholarly research. To counter terrorism it is important to understand the inner-workings of such groups. How do terrorist groups fund their operations in order to be able to carry them out continuously? It is often assumed that the arms and drug trade on the black market are the main source of income for terrorists groups (Kaplan). Unbeknownst to many, there is an illegal trade in art and historical artifacts that funds terrorist activities. How do terrorists use …
