For instance, this theory neglects the nature of demographic and social formation of states in using this concept to explain alliances. The present study uses the Constructivist approach in studying these causes. Constructivists, argue that understanding how actors develop their interests is important in explaining international political phenomenon. To explain interest formation, they focus on the social identities of individuals or states. Identity, makes some countries more attractive than others. Honor And War, Amanda Frances Paulin Jun 2005

Honor And War, Amanda Frances Paulin

Archived Theses and Dissertations

International conflicts have modified into entities that would have been unrecognizable to scholars and practitioners of International Relations two decades or so ago. The global battlefield is transforming into, not objective reality, but rather a field of combined social aspects used to manipulate and twist reality in favor of the players seeking to overcome power positions and grievances. Current patterns of cooperation and conflict constitute a new paradigm of understanding for political science and international relations theorists. Traditional dynamics of power struggles between interstate conflicts have disappeared and instead have been replaced with a complex set of dynamics based on …

Whatever Happened To The State?: A Preliminary Analysis Of The Role Of State And Civil Society In Development Discourse, Corrie Blankenbeckler

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The basic research problem of this thesis lies in the conflicting nature of the policies of the international financial system and of non-government organizations with regard to the state. Contemporary discourse in the international aid community manifests a deep mistrust of state institutions' ability to effectively manage developments reforms, but lacks the theoretical foundations and organizational methodologies that would be necessary to develop strategies to build up the state so that it might better perform its duties and minimize corruption.

Contemporary Alevi Politics: The Case Of Corum, Hande Bayrak Jun 2005

Contemporary Alevi Politics: The Case Of Corum, Hande Bayrak

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Among the scholars of Turkey, there is a wide-spread tendency to view post-1980s as an era of progress and liberalization that also encompasses the fom1ation of a nascent civil society. Within that context, the contemporary revival of Alevilik in Turkey, along with the revival of Sunni Islam, is believed to demonstrate how a culture based group challenges the authority of the homogeneous national identity. Thus, the increasing visibility of Alevis in the public sphere is also taken as a proof of the formation of a pluralist and multicultural environment in Turkey, in which the power of the state is diminished. …

E-Governance In Egypt: A New Methodology To Poverty Reduction, Shahdan Mahmoud Niazi

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the thesis is to examine if the e-governance initiative in Egypt can contribute to poverty reduction. The study utilizes people-centered indicators by employing Sen's "capability approach" where Sen shifts from the traditional understanding of poverty as derivative of insufficient resources to a new perspective which incorporates the lack of capabilities and opportunities into the definition of the term. The thesis concludes that IT is not the determinant cure that can transform the mode of governance within the government sector in a way that can contribute to poverty alleviation. The transformation of the governance mode for enhanced human …

Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the National Democratic Party in Egypt (NDP). It assesses the internal dynamics and reforms of the party between 2000 and 2004 and asks to what extent these reforms have influenced the nature and institutionalization of the party. Starting from the emergence of the Egyptian republic, it traces the rise and development of the consecutive single parties under Nasser and the creation of the NDP under Sadat in 1978. This thesis suggests that the reforms of 2000 do not appear to have significantly increased the level of institutionalization of Egypt’s persistently dominant party. It argues that the reforms …

Humanitarian Intervention And Its Challenges To Sovereignty, Marwa Hamed Hashem Feb 2005

Humanitarian Intervention And Its Challenges To Sovereignty, Marwa Hamed Hashem

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The thesis discusses the controversy regarding how humanitarian intervention often impacts the sovereignty of a country. The dispute is that humanitarian intervention clearly threatens and challenges sovereignty, non intervention and non use of force principles. On the other hand, some politicians and analysts argue that sovereign states have a responsibility towards their population, thus the question which should be evoked here is whether governments should be allowed to carry out genocide and mass killings without external interference in order to maintain their sovereignty? In addition the thesis discusses the changes that the notion of sovereignty has gone through over the …
