Spring Burns And Its Effects On Vernal Forbs, Liam Poitra, Miriam Gieske, Stuart Wagenius Apr 2024

Spring Burns And Its Effects On Vernal Forbs, Liam Poitra, Miriam Gieske, Stuart Wagenius

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

Grasslands are the least protected ecosystem on earth. In North America, protected native grasslands are typically burned in the spring, when native warm-season grasses are dormant, to reduce growth of invasive cool-season grasses; burn seasons historically included summer burns. This study aims to find how spring burns affect early spring flowering forbs (non-woody, non-grass plants).

Cattle Resource Selection On Late Fall Sagebrush Steppe Habitat In Idaho, United States, Larry Cole Kempton, April Hulet, Jim Sprinkle, Randy Larsen, Jameson Brennan, Dan Lauritzen, Sawyer Fonnesbeck, Justin Hatch

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Introduction Targeted cattle grazing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for controlling invasive grasses like cheatgrass in sagebrush-steppe ecosystems1. However, there's a lack of understanding about cattle distribution and their preference for invasives during the dormant season. One statistical model that provides insights into cattle distribution and the selection of resources (e.g., vegetation) is the Resource Selection Function (RSF) model2. Our research objective is to utilize a resource selection function to predict the probability of cattle selecting a particular location, in our case areas with higher cheatgrass abundance, based on environmental variables. The development of a resource selection function …

Effects Of Grass Species And Soil Types On Early Successional Forb Species, Raechel Hunsaker, April Hulet, Matthew Madsen, Mallory Hinton, Derek Tilley Mar 2024

Effects Of Grass Species And Soil Types On Early Successional Forb Species, Raechel Hunsaker, April Hulet, Matthew Madsen, Mallory Hinton, Derek Tilley

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Many early successional plant species have been considered weeds because of their lack of forage value for livestock (Whitson and Burrill, 2009). However, these early successional plant species have the potential to aid rangeland restoration in a variety of ways including:

• Food source for pollinators (Dumroese et al., 2016).

• Soil partitioning for climax communities of native perennials (Tilley et al., 2022).

• Competition against invasive annual species (Leger et al., 2014). To determine which early colonizing (or pioneer) species have the greatest restoration potential, interspecific competitive interactions should be evaluated.

Exploring Soil Plant Relationships To Inform Seed Selection For Rangeland Restoration, Mallory Hinton, April Hulet, Matt Madsen, Raechel Hunsaker, Shannon Nelson Mar 2024

Exploring Soil Plant Relationships To Inform Seed Selection For Rangeland Restoration, Mallory Hinton, April Hulet, Matt Madsen, Raechel Hunsaker, Shannon Nelson

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Seeding plants post disturbance on rangelands is a challenge due to unique ecological and environmental conditions such as:

• Limited water availability1

• Invasive species2

• Soil health3

• Native seed supplies4

One of the key factors to address these challenges and have a successful seeding is to understand the relationship between soil properties and the plants that grow within them.

Population Monitoring Of Beaver Mountain Groundsel, Autumn Gudmundsen, Loreen Allphin, Madison Huie, Steve Flinders

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

2nd Place Poster Design

• Beaver Mountain groundsel, Packera castoreus, is a rare flowering plant, endemic to the Tushar Mountains of Utah (fig.1 & 2).

• P. castoreus has been classified as high priority for monitoring and conservation by the Utah Native Plant Society1.

• The plants in the Tushars are some of the least studied in Utah.

• There have been conservation concerns for rare alpine species recently due to increased threats. Threats to this species include:

• Grazing from large ungulates (mountain goats, deer, & elk)2

• Human impacts, especially hiking1

• Climate change1

• To better understand …

Using Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi To Help Establish And Increase Vigor Of Plants In Mineland Soils, Melissa Burrell, Brad Geary, Shannon Nelson, Josh Moroni De Santiago Lazalde, Scott Kent, Matthew Madsen

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

  • Vegetation establishment in areas impacted by mining can be difficult due to a lack of beneficial soil microbes.
  • The introduction of soil mutualists, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), may improve mineland revegetation efforts. AMF forms a mutually beneficial relationship with plants to aid in nutrient absorption and improve water uptake.
  • Practitioners commonly need to decide where to source their AMF. Locally collected AMF requires effort to collect and process, but this source should be adapted to the restoration site. Commercial products are easy to obtain, but their strains may not be suitable for the environment they are being placed …

Mp: 766 Roadside Rights-Of-Way As Pollinator Habitat: A Literature Review, Brianne Du Clos Jun 2023

Mp: 766 Roadside Rights-Of-Way As Pollinator Habitat: A Literature Review, Brianne Du Clos

Miscellaneous Publications

Pollination of crops and naturally-occurring flowering plants is a critical ecosystem service provided by managed and unmanaged animal pollinators. Insects are the most studied pollinators, particularly managed honey bees, unmanaged wild bees, and butterflies. Bees and butterflies thrive in early-successional habitat featuring grasses, exposed soil, wildflowers, and shrubs, which is consistently found within transportation and utility rights-of-way (ROW). However, intensive management of ROW can reduce the amount of high-quality pollinator habitat; such practices include frequent mowing, broadcast herbicide use, and planting non-native cool season grasses. Here, we review peer-reviewed academic and non-peer reviewed gray literature describing ROW management practices and …

Grafting Jig For Small-Diameter American Beech: Proof Of Concept And First Print File, Andrea L. Myers, Tara Bal

Michigan Tech 3D Designs

This tool may be useful for grafting other small diameter woody plant species. This jig can be used by non-experts to simplify and standardize the initial cuts necessary for side grafting small-diameter American beech. The initial file which is suitable for 3D printing is available here, whereas we have the intention of undergoing iterative revisions to refine the tool, considering different sizes and modifications. Future versions will be added through the same avenue as advancements are made.

This book come into fruition only a few weeks into my 11 month Green Iowa AmeriCorps service term with Dubuque County Conservation. All Green Iowa AmeriCorps's members are required to complete a Personal Development Project over the course of their service term. This project must relate to either the mission of GIA or of the host site. Dubuque County Conservation's vision is "to engage the community's stewardship and enjoyment of its natural resources."

When brainstorming possible project ideas, I knew I wanted to choose something I knew little about, but wanted to learn more about. I had been wanting to …
