Search For Light Tetraquark States In Υ ( 1 S ) And Υ ( 2 S ) Decays, S. Jia Et Al., David Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We search for the JPC=0−− and 1+− light tetraquark states with masses up to 2.46 GeV/c2 in Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) decays with data samples of (102±2) million and (158±4) million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the studied production modes, and 90% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their branching fractions in Υ(1S)and Υ(2S) decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) decays into final states with f1(1285) are measured to be B(Υ(1S)→f1(1285)+anything)=(46±28(stat)±13(syst))×10−4 and B(Υ(2S)→f1(1285)+anything)=(22±15(stat)±6.3(syst))×10−4. The measured χb2→J/ψ+anything branching fraction is measured to be (1.50±0.34(stat)±0.22(syst))×10−3, and 90% …

We report on the first measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the exclusive process of coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off a nucleus. The experiment uses the 6 GeV electron beam from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator at Jefferson Lab incident on a pressurized 4He gaseous target placed in front of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The scattered electron is detected by CLAS and the photon by a dedicated electromagnetic calorimeter at forward angles. To ensure the exclusivity of the process, a specially designed radial time projection chamber is used to detect the recoiling 4 …

Evidence For Isospin Violation And Measurement Of C P Asymmetries In B → K ∗ ( 892 ) Γ, T. Horiguchi Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri Nov 2017

Evidence For Isospin Violation And Measurement Of C P Asymmetries In B → K ∗ ( 892 ) Γ, T. Horiguchi Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report the first evidence for isospin violation in B→K∗γ and the first measurement of the difference of CP asymmetries between B+→K*+γ and B0→K*0γ. This analysis is based on the data sample containing 772×106B¯B pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1σ, Δ0+=[+6.2±1.5(stat)±0.6(syst)±1.2(f+−/f00)]%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of B+B− to B0¯B0 production in Υ(4S) decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the standard model. The result for the difference of CP asymmetries …

Measurement Of The Decays B → Η ℓ Ν ℓ And B → Η ′ ℓ Ν ℓ In Fully Reconstructed Events At Belle, C. Beleño Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report branching fraction measurements of the decays B+→ηℓ+νℓ and B+→η′ℓ+νℓ based on 711 fb−1 of data collected near the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. This data sample contains 772 million B¯B events. One of the two Bmesons is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. Among the remaining (“signal-B”) daughters, we search for the η meson in two decay channels, η→γγ and η→π+π−π0, and reconstruct the η′meson in η′→ηπ+π− with subsequent decay of the η into γγ. Combining the two η modes and using an extended maximum likelihood, the B+→ηℓ+νℓ branching fraction …

Search For Cp Violation And Measurement Of The Branching Fraction In The Decay D0 → K0 Sk0 S, N. Dash Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report a study of the decay D0→K0SK0S using 921  fb−1 of data collected at or near the Υ(4S) and Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e− collider. The measured time-integrated CP asymmetry is ACP(D0→K0SK0S)=(−0.02±1.53±0.02±0.17)%, and the branching fraction is B(D0→K0SK0S)=(1.321±0.023±0.036±0.044)×10−4, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the normalization mode (D0→K0Sπ0). These results are significantly more precise than previous measurements available for this mode. The ACP measurement is consistent with the standard model expectation.

Study Of Η And Dipion Transitions In Υ(4 S) Decays To Lower Bottomonia, E. Guido Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We study hadronic transitions between bottomonium states using 496 fb−1 data collected at the Υ(4S)resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e− collider. We measure B(Υ(4S)→π+π−Υ(1S))=(8.2±0.5(stat)±0.4(syst))×10−5, B(Υ(4S)→π+π−Υ(2S))=(7.9±1.0(stat)±0.4(syst))×10−5, and B(Υ(4S)→ηΥ(1S))=(1.70±0.23(stat)±0.08(syst))×10−4. We measure the ratio of branching fractions R=B(Υ(4S)→ηΥ(1S))/B(Υ(4S)→π+π−Υ(1S))=2.07±0.30(stat)±0.11(syst). We search for the decay Υ(13D1,2)→ηΥ(1S), but do not find significant evidence for such a transition. We also measure the initial-state radiation production cross sections of the Υ(2S,3S) resonances and we find values compatible with the expected ones. Finally, the analysis of the Υ(4S)→π+π−Υ(1S)events shows indications for a resonant contribution due to the f0(980) meson.

Search For Λ + C → Φ P Π 0 And Branching Fraction Measurement Of Λ + C → K − Π + P Π 0, B. Pal Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ+c→ϕpπ0 in e+e− collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 fb−1. The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e− asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the Υ(4S) and Υ(5S)resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Λ+c→ϕpπ0)<15.3×10−5 at 90% confidence level. The contribution of nonresonant Λ+c→K+K−pπ0 decays is found to be consistent with zero, and the corresponding upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(Λ+c→K+K−pπ0)NR<6.3×10−5 at 90% confidence level. We also search for an intermediate hidden-strangeness pentaquark decay P+s→ϕp. We see no evidence for this intermediate decay and set an upper limit on the product branching fraction of B(Λ+c→P+sπ0)×B(P+s→ϕp)<8.3×10−5 at 90% confidence level. Finally, we measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-favored decay Λ+c→K−π+pπ0; the result is B(Λ+c→K−π+pπ0)=(4.42±0.05(stat)±0.12(syst)±0.16(norm))%, which is the most precise measurement to date.

Invariant-Mass And Fractional-Energy Dependence Of Inclusive Production Of Dihadrons In E + E − Annihilation At √ S = 10.58 Gev, R. Seidl Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri Aug 2017

Invariant-Mass And Fractional-Energy Dependence Of Inclusive Production Of Dihadrons In E + E − Annihilation At √ S = 10.58 Gev, R. Seidl Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

The inclusive cross sections for dihadrons of charged pions and kaons (e+e−→hhX) in electron-positron annihilation are reported. They are obtained as a function of the total fractional energy and invariant mass for any di-hadron combination in the same hemisphere as defined by the thrust event-shape variable and its axis. Since same-hemisphere dihadrons can be assumed to originate predominantly from the same initial parton, di-hadron fragmentation functions are probed. These di-hadron fragmentation functions are needed as an unpolarized baseline in order to quantitatively understand related spin-dependent measurements in other processes and to apply them to the extraction of quark transversity distribution …

Measurement Of The Branching Fraction And Cp Asymmetry In B 0 → Π 0Π 0 Decays, And An Improved Constraint On Φ2, T. Julius Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We measure the branching fraction and CP violation asymmetry in the decay B0→π0π0, using a data sample of 752×106 B¯B pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− collider. The obtained branching fraction and direct CP asymmetry are B(B→π0π0)=[1.31±0.19(stat)±0.19(syst)]×10−6 and ACP=+0.14±0.36(stat)±0.10(syst), respectively. The signal significance, including the systematic uncertainty, is 6.4 standard deviations. We combine these results with Belle’s earlier measurements of B0→π+π− and B±→π±π0 to exclude the CP-violating parameter ϕ2 from the range 15.5°<ϕ2

Measurement Of Branching Fraction And Direct Cp Asymmetry In Charmless B+ → K+K−Π + Decays At Belle, C.-L. Hsu Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report a study of the charmless hadronic decay of the charged B meson to the three-body final state K+K−π+. The results are based on a data sample that contains 772×106  B¯B pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The measured inclusive branching fraction and direct CP asymmetry are (5.38±0.40±0.35)×10−6 and −0.170±0.073±0.017, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The K+K− invariant mass distribution of the signal candidates shows an excess in the region below 1.5  GeV/c2, which is consistent with the previous studies from BABAR …

Perspective: The Physics, Diagnostics, And Applications Of Atmospheric Pressure Low Temperature Plasma Sources Used In Plasma Medicine, M. Laroussi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Low temperature plasmas have been used in various plasma processing applications for several decades. But it is only in the last thirty years or so that sources generating such plasmas at atmospheric pressure in reliable and stable ways have become more prevalent. First, in the late 1980s, the dielectric barrier discharge was used to generate relatively large volume diffuse plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Then, in the early 2000s, plasma jets that can launch cold plasma plumes in ambient air were developed. Extensive experimental and modeling work was carried out on both methods and much of the physics governing such sources …

Extraoral Maxillofacial Prosthesis Implant Retention Systems: A Critical Review., Hugh Byrne, Marina L. Pimentel

Articles

Objectives: The purpose of this literature review is to provide information on the different available techniques for implant-supported prosthetic retention, which are bar-clip, o-ring or magnets. Through presenting the practitioner preferences reported in literature, although limited from strict comparison due to the heterogeneity of methodologies and studied individuals, this review aims to identify the choices for maxillofacial prosthesis implant retention systems, regarding patient comfort and good aesthetic outcome, as an aid to surgical and prosthetic planning for implant-supported extraoral maxillofacial prosthetics. With proper knowledge of each implant retention system, a practitioner can design a treatment plan which allows for a …

Measurement Of The Michel Parameters (, Ξκ) In The Radiative Leptonic Decay Of Τ, N. Shimizu Et Al., David Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters ¯η and ξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the τ lepton using 703 fb−1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e +e − collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e +e − → τ +τ − → (π +π 0ν¯)(l −ννγ¯ ) (l = e or µ). The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are ¯η = −2.0 ± 1.5 ± 0.8 and ξκ = 0.6 ± 0.4 ± 0.2, where the first error …

Observation Of An Alternative Χ_{C0}(2p) Candidate In E^{+}E^{-}→J/Ψdd[Over ¯], K. Chilikin Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We perform a full amplitude analysis of the process e+e−→J/ψD¯D, where D refers to either D0 or D+. A new charmoniumlike state X∗(3860) that decays to D¯D is observed with a significance of 6.5σ. Its mass is (3862+26−32 +40−13)  MeV/c2, and its width is (201+154−67 +88−82)  MeV. The JPC=0++ hypothesis is favored over the 2++ hypothesis at the level of 2.5σ. The analysis is based on the 980  fb−1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e− collider KEKB.

First Measurement Of T-Odd Moments In D^{0}→K_{S}^{0}Π^{+}Π^{-}Π^{0} Decays, K. Pransanth Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report the first measurement of the T-odd moments in the decay D0→K0Sπ+π−π0 from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 966 fb−1 collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. From these moments we determine the CP-violation-sensitive asymmetry aT-oddCP=[−0.28±1.38(stat.)+0.23−0.76(syst.)]×10−3, which is consistent with no CP violation. In addition, we perform aT−oddCP measurements in different regions of the D0→K0Sπ+π−π0 phase space; these are also consistent with no CP violation.

Lepton-Flavor-Dependent Angular Analysis Of B→K^{*}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}, S. Wehle Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We present a measurement of angular observables and a test of lepton flavor universality in the B → K∗ ` +` − decay, where ` is either e or µ. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb−1 containing 772 × 106 BB¯ pairs, collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e +e − collider KEKB. The result is consistent with Standard Model (SM) expectations, where the largest discrepancy from a SM prediction is observed in the muon modes with a local significance of 2.6σ.

The 6.8σ anomaly in excited 8Be nuclear decays via internal pair creation is fit well by a new particle interpretation. In a previous analysis, we showed that a 17 MeV protophobic gauge boson provides a particle physics explanation of the anomaly consistent with all existing constraints. Here we begin with a review of the physics of internal pair creation in 8Be decays and the characteristics of the observed anomaly. To develop its particle interpretation, we provide an effective operator analysis for excited 8Be decays to particles with a variety of spins and parities and show that …

Precise Determination Of The Ckm Matrix Element |Vcb| With B¯0 → D∗ + ` − Ν¯` Decays With Hadronic Tagging At Belle, A. Abdesselam Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

The precise determination of the CKM matrix element |Vcb| is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the B¯0→D∗+ℓ−ν¯ℓ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed B-meson, using 772 million e+e−→Υ(4S)→BB¯ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the B¯0→D∗+ℓ−ν¯ℓdecay in the B-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction (B¯0→D∗+ℓ−ν¯ℓ)=(4.95±0.11±0.22)×10−2, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. The value of |Vcb| is …

We describe the techniques available for retention of implant-supported prostheses: bar-clips, O-rings, and magnets. We present reported preferences and, although this is limited by the heterogeneity of methods used and patients studied, we hope we have identified the best retention systems for maxillofacial prosthetic implants. If practitioners know the advantages and disadvantages of each system, they can choose the most natural and comfortable prosthesis. We searched the PubMed and Scopus databases, and restricted our search to papers published 2001–13. MeSH terms used were Maxillofacial prosthesis and Craniofacial prosthesis OR Craniofacial prostheses. We found a total of 2630 papers, and after …

Observation Of D^{0}→Ρ^{0}Γ And Search For Cp Violation In Radiative Charm Decays, T. Nanut Et Al., D. Joffee, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report the first observation of the radiative charm decay D0→ρ0γ and the first search for CP violation in decays D0→ρ0γ, ϕγ, and ¯K*0(892)γ, using a data sample of 943 fb−1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The branching fraction is measured to be B(D0→ρ0γ)=(1.77±0.30±0.07)×10−5, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The obtained CP asymmetries ACP(D0→ρ0γ)=+0.056±0.152±0.006, ACP(D0→ϕγ)=−0.094±0.066±0.001, and ACP(D0→¯K*0γ)=−0.003±0.020±0.000 are consistent with no CP violation. We also present an improved measurement of the branching fractions B(D0→ϕγ)=(2.76±0.19±0.10)×10−5 and B(D0→¯K*0γ)=(4.66±0.21±0.21)×10−4.

Search For B− → Μ −Ν¯Μ Decays At The Belle Experiment, A. Sibidanov Et Al., Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report the result of a search for the decay B−→μ−ν¯μ. The signal events are selected based on the presence of a high momentum muon and the topology of the rest of the event showing properties of a generic B-meson decay, as well as the missing energy and momentum being consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino from the signal decay. We find a 2.4 standard deviation excess above background including systematic uncertainties, which corresponds to a branching fraction of (B−→μ−ν¯μ)=(6.46±2.22±1.60)×10−7 or a frequentist 90% confidence level interval on the B−→μ−ν¯μ branching fraction of [2.9,10.7]×10−7. This result is obtained from …
