Spectroscopic Studies Of Melamine At High Pressure, Martin Donald Galley Dec 2011

Spectroscopic Studies Of Melamine At High Pressure, Martin Donald Galley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

We have performed mid- and far- Infra Red (IR) absorption, Raman spectroscopy, and angular dispersive x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies on melamine under high pressure and room temperature. We have verified the presence of two prior reported phase transitions, the first between 1-2 GPa, and the second between 7-9 GPa. We have also found evidence of a third unreported phase transition between 14-16 GPa, during which, there was a sudden disappearance of all low energy peaks (-1 ) in both the Raman and IR spectra. The far-IR peak movement experiences a discontinuity as the rate of peak movement suddenly changes. …

Spectroscopic Methods Of Process Monitoring For Safeguards Of Used Nuclear Fuel Separations, Jamie Lee Warburton Dec 2011

Spectroscopic Methods Of Process Monitoring For Safeguards Of Used Nuclear Fuel Separations, Jamie Lee Warburton

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

To support the demonstration of a more proliferation-resistant nuclear fuel processing plant, techniques and instrumentation to allow the real-time, online determination of special nuclear material concentrations in-process must be developed. An ideal materials accountability technique for proliferation resistance should provide nondestructive, realtime, on-line information of metal and ligand concentrations in separations streams without perturbing the process. UV-Visible spectroscopy can be adapted for this precise purpose in solvent extraction-based separations.

The primary goal of this project is to understand fundamental URanium EXtraction (UREX) and Plutonium-URanium EXtraction (PUREX) reprocessing chemistry and corresponding UV-Visible spectroscopy for application in process monitoring for safeguards. By …

New Cross Sections For H On H2 Collisional Transitions, Qianxia Zou Aug 2011

New Cross Sections For H On H2 Collisional Transitions, Qianxia Zou

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The cross section for H on H2 collisions is important for astrophysics as well as our understanding of the simple chemical systems. This is the simplest atom-molecule cross section. With a new H3 potential surface by Mielke et al., we have modified the ABC code by Skouteris, Castillo and Manolopoulos to calculate new cross sections. These cross sections are compared to previous cross section calculations.

Raman Spectroscopic Study Of Solid Solution Spinel Oxides, Brian D. Hosterman Aug 2011

Raman Spectroscopic Study Of Solid Solution Spinel Oxides, Brian D. Hosterman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Solid solution spinel oxides of composition MgxNi1−xCr2O4, NiFexCr2−xO4, and FexCr3−xO4 were synthesized and characterized using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Frequencies of the Raman-active modes are tracked as the metal cations within the spinel lattice are exchanged. This gives information about the dependence of the lattice vibrations on the tetrahedral and octahedral cations. The highest-frequency Raman-active mode, A1g, is unaffected by substitution of the divalent tetrahedral cation, whereas the lower frequency vibrations are more strongly affected by substitution of the tetrahedral cation. The change in wavenumber of many phonons is nonlinear upon cation exchange. All detected modes of MgxNi1−xCr2O4 and …

Numerical Simulations Of Accretion Disks And Extrasolar Planets, Stefan Luketic May 2011

Numerical Simulations Of Accretion Disks And Extrasolar Planets, Stefan Luketic

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

We study mass outflows from astrophysical objects. Using numerical hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate outflows from accretion disks and exoplanets. In the first part of this dissertation, we present the results of Zeus 2D hydrodynamical simulations of the disk photosphere irradiated by strong X–rays that are produced in the innermost part of the disk of an accreting black hole. As expected, the irradiation heats the photosphere and drives a thermal wind. To apply our results to the well– studied X–ray transient source GRO J1655–40, we utilized the observed mass of its black hole and the observed properties of its X–ray radiation …

Extraction Chromatographic Studies Of Rutherfordium And Dubnium Homologs, Megan E. Bennett May 2011

Extraction Chromatographic Studies Of Rutherfordium And Dubnium Homologs, Megan E. Bennett

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Studying the chemistry of transactinide elements does not only allow for these elements to be properly placed in the Periodic Table, but it also permits for the extrapolation of the electronic structure based upon the position of the element in the Periodic Table. In addition it enable for the assessment of the role that relativistic effects play in the chemical behavior of the heaviest elements. An improved understanding of the role of relativistic effects in chemistry of the heaviest elements allows for a better understanding of the fundamentals principles that govern the Periodic Table. In order to investigate the chemistry …

Dispersion Of The Hyperpolarizability Of The Carbon Tetrachloride Molecule, Scott Wilde May 2011

Dispersion Of The Hyperpolarizability Of The Carbon Tetrachloride Molecule, Scott Wilde

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The second hyperpolarizability of a molecule is the microscopic version of the third order susceptibility. Direct measurements of the ratio of the second hyperpolarizability of carbon tetrachloride to diatomic nitrogen are made possible through electric field induced second harmonic generation. Whenever the dispersion of the second hyperpolarizability is not negligible, there should be deviations from Kleinman symmetry. Previous experimental data for second hyperpolarizability of this molecule have only been at two frequencies and theory predicts the zero frequency value. In order to provide for a better extrapolation to zero frequency, additional gas phase measurements of this ratio at optical frequencies …
