Dynamics Of The Dbi Spike Soliton, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen Dec 1999

Dynamics Of The Dbi Spike Soliton, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen

David Kastor

We compare oscillations of a fundamental string ending on a D3-brane in two different settings: (1) a test-string radially threading the horizon of an extremal black D3-brane and (2) the spike soliton of the DBI effective action for a D3-brane. Previous work has shown that overall transverse modes of the test-string appear as l=0 modes of the transverse scalar fields of the DBI system. We identify DBI world-volume degrees of freedom that have dynamics matching those of the test-string relative transverse modes. We show that there is a map, resembling T-duality, between relative and overall transverse modes for the test-string …

Dynamics Of A Gravitational Billiard With A Hyperbolic Lower Boundary, Matthew L. Ferguson, B. N. Miller, M. A. Thompson Dec 1999

Dynamics Of A Gravitational Billiard With A Hyperbolic Lower Boundary, Matthew L. Ferguson, B. N. Miller, M. A. Thompson

Matthew L. Ferguson

Gravitational billiards provide a simple method for the illustration of the dynamics of Hamiltonian systems. Here we examine a new billiard system with two parameters, which exhibits, in two limiting cases, the behaviors of two previously studied one-parameter systems, namely the wedge and parabolic billiard. The billiard consists of a point mass moving in two dimensions under the influence of a constant gravitational field with a hyperbolic lower boundary. An iterative mapping between successive collisions with the lower boundary is derived analytically. The behavior of the system during transformation from the wedge to the parabola is investigated for a few …

Hopf Bifurcation In Models For Pertussis Epidemiology, Herbert W. Hethcote, Yi Li, Zhujun Jing Dec 1999

Hopf Bifurcation In Models For Pertussis Epidemiology, Herbert W. Hethcote, Yi Li, Zhujun Jing

Yi Li

Pertussis (whooping cough) incidence in the United States has oscillated with a period of about four years since data was first collected in 1922. An infection with pertussis confers immunity for several years, but then the immunity wanes, so that reinfection is possible. A pertussis reinfection is mild after partial loss of immunity, but the reinfection can be severe after complete loss of immunity. Three pertussis transmission models with waning of immunity are examined for periodic solutions. Equilibria and their stability are determined. Hopf bifurcation of periodic solutions around the endemic equilibrium can occur for some parameter values in two …

An Investigation Of Environmental Management Systems Motivations And Firm Performance, Robert Sroufe, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Roger Calantone Nov 1999

An Investigation Of Environmental Management Systems Motivations And Firm Performance, Robert Sroufe, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Roger Calantone

Frank L. Montabon

There are many of issues associated with Environmental Management Systems (EMS). One attempt to overcome these issues can be found in the development of IS0 14000. In this paper, a hypothesized model of the motivations influencing the decision to seek IS0 14000 certification and the relationship to firm performance is examined. The hypothesized model is tested through the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results identify positive relationships between uncertainty and the motivations to seek EMS certification. A positive relationship is shown between the status of a firm’s EMS, the environmental options a firm will explore. Finally, a positive …

Iso 14000: Assessing Its Perceived Impact On Corporate Performance, Frank L. Montabon, Steven A. Melnyk, Robert Sroufe, Roger J. Calantone

Frank L. Montabon

The IS0 14000 environmental standard is a relatively recent development in Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM). It applies to environmental systems and processes the same approach used by its predecessor, the IS0 9000 quality standards. Being relatively new, there are numerous questions regarding the impact of this new standard both on the corporate environmental management system and corporate performance. This paper addresses some of these questions, by drawing on data generated by a large-scale survey of American managers. The results indicate that, even though IS0 14000 has achieved relatively limited acceptance, there is strong evidence to indicate that this standard can …

Investigating The Linkage Between Total Quality Management And Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing, Sime Curkovic, Steve Melnyk, Rob Handfield, Frank L. Montabon, Robert Sroufe

Frank L. Montabon

This paper explicitly examines the relationship that exists between Total Quality Management (TQM) and Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM) systems. It has been presumed in numerous past studies that such a relationship does exist. It has been argued that those firms that have successfuhy implemented a TQM system are better positioned to successfully implement an ERM system. This relationship, however, has not yet been statistically and empirically evaluated. In this study, the authors evaluate this relationship using a large-scale survey of plant managers as the data source and Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling as the statistical tools. The study …

For very general two-point boundary value problems we show that any positive solution satisfies a certain integral relation. As a consequence we obtain some new uniqueness and multiplicity results.

Phase Imaging: Deep Or Superficial?, Nancy Burnham, O Behrend, L Odoni, J Loubet Oct 1999

Phase Imaging: Deep Or Superficial?, Nancy Burnham, O Behrend, L Odoni, J Loubet

Nancy A. Burnham

Phase images acquired while intermittently contacting a sample surface with the tip of an atomic force microscope cantilever are not easy to relate to material properties. We have simulated dynamic force curves and compared simulated with experimental results. For some cantilever–sample combinations, the interaction remains a surface effect, whereas for others, the tip penetrates the sample significantly. Height artifacts in the “topography” images, and the role of the sample stiffness, work of adhesion, damping, and topography in the cantilever response manifest themselves to different extents depending on the indentation depth.

Vertical stacking of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) that emit the three primary colors is a means for achieving full-color flat panel displays. The physics, performance, and applications of stacked OLEDs (SOLEDs) are discussed in this and the following paper (Papers I and II, respectively). In Paper I, we analyze optical microcavity effects that can distort the emission colors of SOLEDs if not properly controlled, and describe design principles to minimize these parasitic effects. We also describe the fabrication and operating characteristics of transparent contacts that are an integral part of SOLEDs. We demonstrate that both metal-containing and metal-free transparent …

Transparent Stacked Organic Light Emitting Devices. Ii. Device Performance And Applications To Displays, G. Gu, G. Parthasarathy, Peifang Tian

Peifang Tian

Vertical stacking of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) that emit the three primary colors is shown to be a means for achieving efficient and bright full-color displays. In Paper I, we addressed stacked OLED (SOLED) design and fabrication principles to optimize emission colors, operating voltage, and efficiency. Here, we present results on two different (metal-containing and metal-free cathode) SOLED structures that exhibit performance suitable for many full-color display applications. The operating voltages at 10 mA/cm2 (corresponding to video display brightnesses) are 6.8, 8.5, and 12.1 V for the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) elements of the metal-containing SOLED, …

Climate Variability In The Andes Of Ecuador And Its Relation To Tropical Pacific And Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies, Mathias Vuille, Raymond S. Bradley, Frank Keimig Oct 1999

Climate Variability In The Andes Of Ecuador And Its Relation To Tropical Pacific And Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies, Mathias Vuille, Raymond S. Bradley, Frank Keimig

Raymond S Bradley

The main spatiotemporal modes of seasonal precipitation and temperature variability in the Andes of Ecuador (1N–4S) and their relation to tropical Pacific and Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) between 1963–92 are identified based on rotated principal component analysis and cross-correlation techniques. Outgoing longwave radiation composites are analyzed during periods of strong oceanic forcing to confirm the proposed physical mechanisms. Despite the close proximity to the Pacific, precipitation variability in the Andes of Ecuador is not related to SSTA in the tropical Pacific domain alone. The El Nin˜o–Southern Oscillation influence is most dominant in the northwestern part of the Andes …

Axiomatic Approach For Quantification Of Image Resolution, Ge Wang, Yi Li Oct 1999

Axiomatic Approach For Quantification Of Image Resolution, Ge Wang, Yi Li

Yi Li

Image resolution is the primary parameter for performance characterization of any imaging system. In this work, we present an axiomatic approach for quantification of image resolution, and demonstrate that a good image resolution measure should be proportional to the standard deviation of the point spread function of an imaging system.

Ab Initio Calculation Of 81Br Nqr Transition Frequencies Of Brominated Aromatics (Flame Retardants), Chris R. Harwell, Anthony A. Mrse, Leslie G. Butler, Randall W. Hall Sep 1999

Ab Initio Calculation Of 81Br Nqr Transition Frequencies Of Brominated Aromatics (Flame Retardants), Chris R. Harwell, Anthony A. Mrse, Leslie G. Butler, Randall W. Hall

Randall W. Hall

Brominated aromatics, used extensively as flame retardants, have been studied with 81Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy. NQR requires lengthy frequency searches because 81Br NQR transition frequencies in brominated aromatics are spread over a wide (40 MHz) range. We investigate the ability of ab initio calculations to narrow this search range by predicting 81Br NQR transition frequencies for a series of brominated aromatics, using restricted Hartree−Fock (RHF) and Becke's three-parameter Lee−Yang−Parr density functional theory hybrid method (B3LYP). Basis sets used are of double and triple-ζ quality with varying degrees of polarization included on bromine. Geometries are the isolated molecules, with …

Tracing Interactions In Hickson Compact Groups Through The Hi, L Verdes-Montenegro, Min S. Yun, B A. Williams, W K. Huchtmeier, A Del Olmo, J Perea

Min S. Yun

We present a global study of HI spectral line mapping for 16 Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) combining new and unpublished VLA data, plus the analysis of the HI content of individual galaxies. Sixty percent of the groups show morphological and kinematical signs of perturbations (from multiple tidal features to concentration of the HI in a single enveloping cloud) and sixty five of the resolved galaxies are found to be HI deficient with respect to a sample of isolated galaxies. In total, 77% of the groups suffer interactions among all its members which provides strong evidence of their reality. We find …

Effects Of The Vertical Plasma Drift Velocity On The Generation And Evolution Of Equatorial Spread F, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess, E. R. De Paula Sep 1999

Effects Of The Vertical Plasma Drift Velocity On The Generation And Evolution Of Equatorial Spread F, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess, E. R. De Paula

Bela G. Fejer

We use radar observations from the Jicamarca Observatory from 1968 to 1992 to study the effects of the F region vertical plasma drift velocity on the generation and evolution of equatorial spread F. The dependence of these irregularities on season, solar cycle, and magnetic activity can be explained as resulting from the corresponding effects on the evening and nighttime vertical drifts. In the early night sector, the bottomside of the F layer is almost always unstable. The evolution of the unstable layer is controlled by the history of the vertical drift velocity. When the drift velocities are large enough, the …

Precise, Scalable Shadow Mask Patterning Of Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light Emitting Devices, Peifang Tian, V. Bulovic, P. Burrows, G. Gu, S. Forrest, T. Zhou

Peifang Tian

We demonstrate a scheme to pattern vacuum-deposited, small molecular weight organic light emitting diodes 􏰉OLEDs􏰀. Both the organic thin films and the metallic electrodes are patterned by shifting the position of a single shadow mask which accompanies the substrate throughout the deposition process. A full color, stacked OLED 􏰉SOLED􏰀 has been fabricated using this technique. The substrate movement relative to the mask was manually controlled to a root mean square accuracy of 􏰑8 􏰇m using a mask translating fixture. The performance of the patterned SOLED is comparable with that of devices fabricated by conventional, low tolerance methods. The limits to …
