Memantine: Can It Be Used To Treat Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder?, Austin Brown, Katherine Liu, Pul Lee, Rachel Muhlenkamp, Manoranjan D'Souza

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairment in social, behavior and communicative skills. The current therapy for ASD only targets the associated symptoms such as aggression, self-harming acts or temper tantrums but not the core symptoms of social dysfunction. The pathology of ASD is not fully understood. Interestingly, imaging studies in ASD patients have reported abnormal high levels of glutamate in certain brain regions that play an important role in social interaction and communication. Thus, it has been hypothesized that medications attenuating glutamate transmission may be used as treatment for some of the core symptoms of …

Management Of Hypertensive Emergencies In Pediatrics, Jennifer L. Bauer, Jamie L. Amero, Amanda C. Mcdavid, Ryan A. Fischer, Alison L. Huet, Karen L. Kier

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

As hypertension becomes more prevalent in the pediatric population, clinicians are more likely to encounter hypertensive emergencies in children, which require pharmacists and physicians to be educated on the therapeutic options for these emergencies. However, the strict governmental requirements on the testing of these drugs in pediatric patients have limited the amount of available evidence on which to base clinical decisions. This review will highlight the available evidence and preferred treatment options for the management of pediatric hypertensive emergencies.

Special Considerations In Pediatric Burn Patients Regarding Drug Dosage And Administration, Kelsey Lindsley, Maureen Moynihan, Angela Chu, Kristen Yaeger, Karen L. Kier

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Pediatric burn patients are a high-risk patient population to treat. These patients have altered physiologic function as a result of the burn injury, in addition to their smaller size and developing bodies. This creates unique challenges during treatment. Accommodations for these patients are made through unique drug dosages and routes of administration. When treating pediatric burn patients, properly assessing and treating pain promptly and effectively is of utmost importance. Nurses who utilize accurate and appropriate pain assessment scales will provide the best treatment of pain. Proper assessment allows the patient to receive the correct analgesic regime, ensuring a faster and …

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder affecting approximately 11 percent of the country's children and adolescents, between the ages four to seventeen years. Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate and amphetamines are the first-line of treatment for ADHD. The increasing use of these stimulant medications has resulted in increased media attention and raised questions about their efficacy and safety. This review focuses on the history of stimulant use in ADHD, the disease's pathophysiology, the long-term benefits of pharmacotherapy, and the possible subsequent adverse effects associated with prolonged stimulant use in children and adolescents suffering from ADHD. Furthermore, we will …

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: A Targeted Review For Pharmacists, Andrew Skouby, Gabi Gegenheimer, Kelsey Lindsley, Sarah Kradel, Michael Rush

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a disease that impacts drug-exposed infants and describes an array of issues that arise in newborns just hours after birth. Patient presentation and disease symptomatology vary widely based upon the specific substance utilized by the mother while pregnant and duration of exposure. Treatment is dependent on which symptoms are present and, assuming an opioid-derived abstinence syndrome, is based primarily on opioid supplementation to prevent symptoms of withdrawal. Treatment of non-opioid derived abstinence syndrome is often slightly more complex and involves the use of different agents depending on the drug of exposure. Due to the intricate …

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease associated with specific gene mutations that presents with pulmonary inflammation and frequent lung infections, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, altered sweat composition and declining lung function. Ivacaftor (Kalydeco®) was approved for treatment of cystic fibrosis in patients 6 years of age and older with a G551D mutation on the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. Ivacaftor is a CFTR potentiator and does not work in patients with a mutation of the F508del. Efficacy has been demonstrated in several trials with a primary outcome of improved FEV1, improvements in pulmonary exacerbations, patient-reported decrease in respiratory …

Pediatric poisoning remains a common and preventable occurrence in the United States. Every year, prescription and over-the-counter medications account for a significant portion of documented poison exposures. Frequent causes of overdose in children include improper medication storage and caregiver or physician dosing error. As easily accessible medication experts, pharmacists have an opportunity to counsel patients in an effort to decrease these preventable poisoning cases. Because children frequently ingest products prescribed for adult use, pharmacist should relay safety considerations to all patients, regardless of age. This article provides a general review of toxicity concerns, discusses clinical implications of common medications resulting …
