Resiliency Can Be Taught: The Impact Of An Evidence-Based Training On Nurse Resilience, Margaret Maxtin
MSN Capstone Projects
A small project team implemented a resiliency training class as part of an evidence-based nursing intervention. Nurses at a tertiary care facility who work on a pediatric hematology/oncology unit participated in the 2-hour training course and learned multiple skills directed at improving resiliency. All participants surveyed responded positively to the class. Future directions for the project include long term follow-up and continued resiliency classes with varied topics to continue improving resilience and decreasing burnout.
The Need For Change In Mental Health, Autumn R. Lambert
The Need For Change In Mental Health, Autumn R. Lambert
MSN Capstone Projects
In order to properly provide care for patients presenting to the emergency room with exacerbations of mental illness, appropriate education should be provided. Holistic care that has been taught to all healthcare professionals should also be practiced at all times. With the appropriate care being provided, healthcare for patients suffering with a mental illness can find healing care that is free of discrimination and bias.
Quality Improvement Project: Communication Guidance During And Following Maternal Hemorrhage, Kathleen Giramur
Quality Improvement Project: Communication Guidance During And Following Maternal Hemorrhage, Kathleen Giramur
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background. Maternal hemorrhage is a significant cause of worsening maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. If timely, effective, and compassionate communication is not provided during and following traumatic birth events, negative mental health problems may result that affect maternal well-being, bonding with the baby, and family relationships. A gap analysis carried out at the clinical site showed that a written, evidence-based guidance on communication with patients and families during and after a maternal hemorrhage event was needed. Compliance through documentation is required by the Joint Commission. Trauma-Informed Care is an evidence-based communication approach that incorporates principles of safety, …

Dissertations
Problem. Parents with children who have neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience high levels of parenting stress. The prevalence of ASD is on the rise in the United States. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of treatment modalities, in effort to better understand which modalities have the most positive impact on children and their parents. DIRFloortime® is a developmental treatment modality used to help strengthen the parent-child bond and used to decrease parental-child stress. The Autism Parenting Stress Index (APSI) measures the impact of an intervention …
Implementation Of A Quality Improvement (Qi) Intervention To Increase Influenza Vaccination Uptake In A Pediatric Primary Care Setting., Lisa Gaines
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Internal and external evidence demonstrates that there is a suboptimal uptake of influenza vaccination (flu vaccine) in all settings, despite national objectives to achieve 80%- 90% immunization rates across all populations. In 2002, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) issued a recommendation that all children 6 months of age and older be immunized annually with the influenza vaccine. Despite these recommendations, influenza vaccination is not required for school entry in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and immunization rates continue to fall below local, state, and national targets. Being considered an optional vaccine leaves the decision to vaccinate (or not) …

Preventing Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Monica Shaw
Master's Projects and Capstones
Central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSI) are considered preventable healthcare acquired infections, and are associated with significantly increased morbidity, mortality, and length of hospital stay. The CLABSI rate in an inpatient unit is a meaningful metric in relation to the safety and quality of care in that microsystem. This quality improvement project examines the efficacy of a CLABSI prevention bundle in reducing CLABSI events and improving adherence to central line care policy within a medical surgical adult intensive care unit. The target areas the bundle aimed to improve were unit processes, awareness of CLABSI and central line policies, and …
Increasing Vaccination Rates In Pregnancy Using A Multifaceted Approach Including Patient Education And Reminder/Recall Interventions, Jas Tiara Mcgee
Increasing Vaccination Rates In Pregnancy Using A Multifaceted Approach Including Patient Education And Reminder/Recall Interventions, Jas Tiara Mcgee
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Given the global tragedy that this most recent pandemic has caused, more attention has been given to the devastating outcomes that the spread of infectious disease outbreaks can have. Similar to those with comorbid conditions, pregnant women are also extremely vulnerable to infectious diseases, as disease manifestation does not only affect the mother, but the fetus as well. Thus, the prevention of both the influenza virus and pertussis are two major goals when providing care for this population. Preventing both of these disease processes during the intrapartum period helps to ensure optimal wellness for both mother and baby and overall …
Education Combined With Reminder Strategies To Improve Cervical Cancer Screening Rates, Christina E. Mclean
Education Combined With Reminder Strategies To Improve Cervical Cancer Screening Rates, Christina E. Mclean
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women worldwide and a leading cause of death in some countries (Jayasekara, 2020). Approximately 13,800 cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in the U.S. last year, and about 4,290 women died (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2020). Regular cervical cancer screening (CCS) reduces morbidity and mortality, but screening rates are low in the U.S. and at the project site (ACS. 2020). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to increase CCS at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with six clinic locations in Northwest Indiana; the primary project site was …

Don't Be Such A Buzzy®Kill: Reducing Pain During Vaccinations In College-Age Students, Katherine Long
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Immunizations play a fundamental role in reducing the occurrence of preventable diseases in the population. Injections related to immunization are the most frequent pain-producing medical procedure implemented worldwide and account for nearly 12 billion injections annually (CDC, 2019; Taddio et al., 2015). These procedures are often perceived as simple but can have a variety of complications including pain. This evidence-based practice project addressed the following PICOT question: In college-aged students receiving immunizations (P), does the Buzzy® device (I) when compared to non-intervention standard of care (C) effectively reduce injection site pain (O) over a 12-week time period (T)? The Buzzy® …

Guided Imagery And Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Pain, Brandy Alicia Kirk
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
The standard of care in the treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer includes identification and biopsy of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) of the breast (Chaterjee et al., 2017; Kneece, 2017). The process of identifying the SLNs involves radioisotope injections into or near the areola. Because this area is highly sensitive, women report this procedure to be considerably painful. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if the provision of a 5-minute session of guided imagery (GI), as a complementary alternative medicine, prior to SLN injections was effective in mitigating reports of procedural pain. A …

Hypertension Management: Improving Medication Adherence Through The Use Of Daily Text Messages, Gaelle Bulabula
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cause of hospitalization and is responsible for approximately 50% of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (Al-Noumani, et al., 2018). Uncontrolled HTN can lead to comorbidities including ischemic heart disease, renal disease, or life-threatening arrythmias (World Health Organization [WHO], 2019). The leading cause of HTN is medication non-compliance (Varleta, et al., 2017). The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine the effectiveness of daily text messages on antihypertensive medication adherence. A comprehensive review of literature generated ten high-level evidence studies demonstrating that daily text messages near each medication dosing time is best practice for improving …

Practice Problem: Delirium is a common, yet often preventable complication in hospitalized patients. It is often caused by fragmented sleep, medications, environmental stimuli, and treatment therapies.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this evidence-based practice change project was: For patients in an adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU), does using a nurse-initiated, non-pharmacological sleep-enhancement protocol, versus no sleep-enhancement protocol, reduce the incidence of ICU-delirium over a period of 2 months?
Evidence: The reviewed literature supported the evidence for effective use of a nurse-initiated protocol in reducing delirium in the ICU. Sixteen articles met the inclusion criteria for the review of literature …
Implementation Of The Visualdx Application By Nurse Practitioners And Physician Assistants Aimed At Improving Diagnostic Accuracy In Skin Of Color Patients, Jill M. Maddox
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
In 2016 the United States black population stood at over 43 million with a projected increase of 41% by 2060, and the “two or more races” category will increase by 197.8% (Vespa et al., 2020), thus intensifying the need for diagnostic accuracy of skin diseases for these demographics. The American Academy of Dermatology (https://www.aad.org, 2020) brochures as well as dermatology textbooks underrepresent skin of color (SOC) cutaneous appearance (Louie and Wilkes, 2018), and darker skin tone dermatology education is limited. This underrepresentation leads to misperceptions, misdiagnoses, and poorer outcomes. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was evaluation of a …

Background: Advance care planning (ACP) is a process to support patients in understanding and expressing their future medical wishes. Despite evidence supporting the benefits of ACP there remain a number of barriers limiting uptake of this important practice. Absence of advance care planning places patients at risk of receiving care misaligned with their values, goals, and preferences as well as increased patient and family distress at end-of-life. Purpose: This quality improvement (QI) project addressed provider knowledge, and patient awareness and level of engagement in the advance care planning process in an effort to increase the frequency and efficacy of ACP …
Educational Intervention To Increase Telemedicine Knowledge In Nurses, Jean Sylvestre Ayissi Essono
Educational Intervention To Increase Telemedicine Knowledge In Nurses, Jean Sylvestre Ayissi Essono
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Limited access to healthcare services is a factor that can reduce quality of care, and it is more pronounced in rural settings. One plausible solution to this concern is telemedicine, the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to provide care when an individual and provider are not in the same location. Although telemedicine has been suggested as a solution to the access to care concern, it is not widely integrated into the nursing practice. Using Nightingale’s holistic theory of caring, the purpose of this DNP project was to determine if an educational study geared towards telemedicine increased knowledge and …
