IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This video presentation addresses the declining feeling of safety by frontline clinical staff due to the recent escalation of combative patients and workplace violence in the healthcare setting, identified through Emotional intelligence and the approach created to address it. This project was crafted as an innovative and creative approach to addressing the issue in the clinical setting without adding additional staff or additional expense to the organization. Additionally, the approach had to be innovative and creative as the author does not own the current process, and knowing to receive stakeholder acceptance, the ownership had to remain with the current stakeholder. …

Assessing Transgender Inclusion Within A Veterans Healthcare System: A Delphi Study, Kathy-Jo B. Lee
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Transgender veterans have specific health care needs and often experience profound health disparities, barriers to accessing care, and varying degrees of stigma and discrimination. Yet, there is a lag in research regarding transgender persons in terms of the extent and impact of diversity and inclusion within healthcare. There is a need to further define inclusion and examine how this concept is operationalized in the healthcare settings. This study addressed the gap in knowledge gained from transgender healthcare research by establishing a consensus definition of transgender inclusion as well as identified contributing factors. The study also compared the end user perspectives …
Exploring Relationships Among Race, Mothers' Perceptions Of Discrimination During Perinatal Healthcare Visits, And The Prevalence Of Adverse Maternal And Neonatal Health Outcomes, Fiona So
Nursing | Senior Theses
The institutionalized marginalization of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) population is not an uncommon theme throughout American history. Although a majority of American society actively refers to racial discrimination in the past tense, recent events such as the Black Lives Matter movement demonstrates that countless biases based solely on skin complexion are still ingrained into the minds of many. Due to the pervasiveness of implicit biases, American healthcare professionals are also subject to believing and acting upon these biases, either consciously or subconsciously, which could directly affect the quality of care that their BIPOC patients receive.

Literature Review: Covid-19'S Impact On Violence, Jean Cheek, Laura Ashworth
VCU Health Nursing
Violence has been exacerbated by the pandemic, resulting in a plethora of research that can be complementary and contradictory. A preliminary thematic literature search was performed using keywords such as human trafficking, IPV, sexual assault, pandemic, covid, and child abuse. This resulted in over 100 articles between 2019 and 2021. The literature review revealed common themes such as pandemics and natural disasters increase the risk for violence in women, children, and marginalized populations. Stay-at-home orders put vulnerable populations in closer proximity to the abuser. A low socioeconomic standing increases the propensity to abuse and be abused. Calls to human trafficking …

Relationship Between Employee Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction Within The Veterans Affairs Health Care System, Krista Penn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Within health care organizations, the experience of care is a critical measure of the quality of a health care system and is an important measure of success. Over the past several years, the quality and experience of care have been criticized within the Veterans Health Administration. Veterans Health Administration hospitals suffer from low patient satisfaction scores and high nurse turnover rates. Research shows a correlation between patient satisfaction and employee satisfaction within other health care organizations, yet there has been limited research on whether this type of relationship exists within facilities across the Veterans Health Administration. Using Donabedian’s quality health …

Nurses Can Make A Difference On The Impact The Uninsured/Underinsured Have On Health Care, Robert Burke
Student Research Poster Presentations 2021
The uninsured rate has increased from 2016 to 2019 and due to the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 and unemployment, that number has likely jumped. Health care has proven to be costly, and the uninsured/underinsured population is viewed as a vulnerable population in the community due to a financial barrier or unemployed status that hinders their ability to receive the health care they need. It is proven that the uninsured/underinsured are more likely to forgo preventative care due to financial reasons. In addition, because the uninsured/underinsured are more likely to forgo preventative care they are more likely to be hospitalized with …

Qualitative Comparative Case Study Exploring The Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Conflicts Experienced By Nurses While Utilizing Ehr-Electronic Health Record Technology, Patricia Alejandra Casas
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Nurses are the largest group of health information technology system users. As the nurses are the focal point of patient care because they interact with multiple areas under the healthcare realm and manage multiple components of patient care, the use of EHR technology is likely to have an impact on their careers and healthcare delivery outcomes. Conflicts experienced during EHR use or adoption have been researched; however, despite these studies, understanding nurses’ experiences of conflicts remain underexplored; in particular, there have been no research studies that have differentiated between interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts experienced. The general problem addressed in this …
