Exploring Incivility Among Nursing And Health Science Students: A Descriptive Study, Diane Louise Smith
Exploring Incivility Among Nursing And Health Science Students: A Descriptive Study, Diane Louise Smith
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Incivility has infiltrated our institutions of higher learning as well as the world of nursing. All too familiar in nursing is the phrase “eating their young,” which aptly describes how nurses treat other nurses, even though they should be nurturing and caring professionals.
The investigator explored nursing and health science students’ perceptions of student and faculty uncivil behaviors within the academic environment, seeking the levels and frequency of the problem. Bandura’s social learning theory presents a sound theoretical framework for this dissertation. The research methodology consisted of a quantitative descriptive approach. The Incivility in Higher Education-Revised (IHE-R) Survey was used …

Improving Oral Care Practices And Aspiration Risk Assessment To Mitigate Risk Of Hospital Acquired Pneumnia, Jeniffer Baker
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
The aim of Improving Oral Care Practices and Aspiration Risk Assessment to Mitigate Risk of Hospital Acquired Pneumonia is to decrease rates of hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) on a 16 bed Transitional Care Unit (TCU) with a mixed skill staff. The theme of the project is risk reduction with improved patient outcomes and cost reduction as reasons for implementation. Fourteen cases of HAP were reported in the last 5 quarters which accounts for 48% of all in-patient acquired infections. Through policy development, standardization of oral care technique, and improved risk factor assessment, the project goal is to decrease rates …

Critical Appraisal Tools And Reporting Guidelines For Evidence-Based Practice, Robin Buccheri, Claire Olivia Sharifi
Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship
Background: Nurses engaged in evidence-based practice (EBP) have two important sets of tools: Critical appraisal tools and reporting guidelines. Critical appraisal tools facilitate the appraisal process and guide a consumer of evidence through an objective, analytical, evaluation process. Reporting guidelines, checklists of items that should be included in a publication or report, ensure that the project or guidelines are reported on with clarity, completeness, and transparency. Purpose The primary purpose of this paper is to help nurses understand the difference between critical appraisal tools and reporting guidelines. A secondary purpose is to help nurses locate the appropriate tool for the …
Increasing Provider Awareness Of Patient Health Literacy Needs For Dental Screenings Among Patients With Diabetes In A Rural Health Clinic, Diana M. Solis
Increasing Provider Awareness Of Patient Health Literacy Needs For Dental Screenings Among Patients With Diabetes In A Rural Health Clinic, Diana M. Solis
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of this project was to increase provider awareness of health literacy needs for recommended dental screenings among patients with diabetes in a rural clinic setting. Over 35% of adults in the United States are considered to have low literacy levels (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2015). Low health literacy levels have an impact on patient outcomes due to decrease compliance with recommended treatment plans and preventive health screenings. Patients with diabetes have a trifold increase of developing oral infections such as periodontal disease, fungal infections, and xerostomia (Kudiyirickal & Pappachan, 2015). Healthcare providers acknowledging a patient’s health …

Implementation Of A Parental Notification System For The Improvement Of Well-Child Care Delivery, Frances Narvaiz
Doctor of Nursing Practice
This quality improvement project aimed to improve routine well-child exam rates in accordance with the American Academy of Pediatrics and Texas Health Steps recommendations through the implementation of a parental notification system. Missed well-child appointments impact health care by disturbing continuity of care and complicating preventive care services. Implementation of the parental notification system during June 2017 to August 2017 consisted of 100 patients from birth to 18 years of age for scheduled well-child visits in a pediatric clinic with a large Hispanic and Medicaid population. Interventions consisted of staff training, reminder phone calls 24 to 48 hours prior to …
Pre-Licensure Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of Safety Culture In Schools Of Nursing, Kristen Hershey
Pre-Licensure Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of Safety Culture In Schools Of Nursing, Kristen Hershey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Safety culture has been demonstrated to be a key factor in high-reliability organizations (HROs), yet healthcare has not achieved a safety culture as seen in HROs despite decades of effort. Student nurses are enculturated into their profession during their pre-licensure education. This period offers an excellent opportunity to teach students the values, norms, and practices of safety culture. However, little is known about the state of safety culture in schools of nursing.
The purpose of this study was to examine the state of patient safety culture as perceived by students in pre-licensure nursing programs in the US using a modified …
High School Seniors' Educational Experience Lnfluencing The Decision To Pursue A Career In Nursing, Ryan L. Rowe
High School Seniors' Educational Experience Lnfluencing The Decision To Pursue A Career In Nursing, Ryan L. Rowe
Dissertations
Many high school students interested in nursing as an occupation choose to engage in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program and subsequently progress through the exploration stage of Super’s Career Development Theory in a succinct, deliberate, and intentional manner. While CTE continues to serve as an educational option for many high school students interested in nursing, its value as a means for students to crystallize, specify, and implement the choice to pursue the high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand career of nursing is not understood to the extent possible. CTE is regularly overlooked as a viable educational option by high school …
The Effects Of Perinatal Methamphetamine Use On Maternal And Child Outcomes: Implications For Education Among Bsn Nursing Students, Tina Nguyen
Honors Theses
The implications of methamphetamine use are vast and prevalent in the U.S. This epidemic is also well recognized in Tennessee and in Hamilton County. The number of men and women that continue to use methamphetamine speaks to the importance of this issue. Among these individuals, pregnant women comprise a significant portion of female methamphetamine users across the United States. The potential complications that can arise for not only a mother but also her child due to maternal methamphetamine use pose a much more significant issue. The detrimental effects that a child can experience as a result of maternal methamphetamine use …

Healthcare And Its Impact On Nurses: The United States Vs. The United Kingdom, Alexandria Colovos
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Currently, in the United States, the topic of healthcare reform is in the back of everyone’s mind. What will come of our healthcare system? Will the cost of healthcare decrease? Will patients have better access to care? With this Capstone Experience/Thesis, I wanted to explore the differences between the current healthcare system that we have in the United States, to the nearly seventy-year-old National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, which provides healthcare to all. The NHS is free at the point of care and is funded by taxation. To understand if such a system would work in the …

A Demonstration Project To Address Juvenile Drug Addiction, Mary Ellen Broaddus
A Demonstration Project To Address Juvenile Drug Addiction, Mary Ellen Broaddus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The rise in adolescent drug use and addiction is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. An eleven year study of youth in European countries found drug use widespread and increasing (Molinaro, Sicilian, & Curzio, 2011). In 2013 there were over 2.8 million new users of illicit drugs, over half of whom were under 18 years of age (‘Drug Facts’, 2015).
Adolescents are at unique risk because biochemical distinctions in their brains, when compared with adults, prompt more risk-taking behaviors (Gallager, 2014). Health risks are considerable and include hypertension, stroke, convulsions and seizures, and liver disease such as cirrhosis and hepatitis. In 2013 …
Von Willebrand Disease, Hannah Smith
Von Willebrand Disease, Hannah Smith
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
von Willebrand disease is a complex disease requiring a complex diagnoses and treatment. The family nurse practitioner must be familiar in the care of this population. The most common signs and symptoms are heavy menses and epistaxis (Abshire et al., 2015, p. 1585). The pathophysiology differs based on what type of von Willebrand disease (VWD) the patient has. VWD has many different inheritance patterns. Type 3 (the most severe) usually happens when the gene is passed from the mother as well as the father. If the inheritance pattern is recessive, and neither parent phenotypically has the disease, then the child …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
VWD is one of the most prevalent inherited bleeding disorder (James, 2017). This disorder is the result of a low levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF). VWF is a protein that binds to factor VIII; an essential clotting protein and platelets in the blood vessel walls that aids in production of a platelet plug during the clotting process (National Hemophilia Foundation, n.d.). This disorder was first described in 1926 by Erik von Willebrand. He distinguished that it differed from hemophilia and named it “pseudo hemophilia” (Leebeek, Eikenboom, 2016, p. 2067).
There are three main types of VWD, which is based …

Severe periodontal inflammation with generalized dental plaque accumulation, spontaneous and severe gingival bleeding, fungal infection, and interdental papillae necrosis are presented in a patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Bite-wing radiographs revealed a generalized horizontal alveolar bone loss of 7-8 millimetres in both arches. Erythematous patches were noted on the gingival mucosa in both jaws. DNA testing was performed to indentify the periodontopathogens. The patient had no signs or symptoms of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This case-report presents the massive periodontal destruction that occurred in a patient infected with HIV. Therefore, it is highly recommended that patients infected with HIV …
Celiac Disease, Julia Hoeft
Celiac Disease, Julia Hoeft
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Digestive disorders are among a long list of conditions patients may seek care for. In recent years, celiac disease is a digestive disorder that has received much attention from both patients and the healthcare community. Due to the considerable symptom variance among patients, celiac disease often goes undiagnosed or is mistaken for another disease process. Celiac disease has become the one of the most common autoimmune inherited disorders in the United States. Celiac disease can range from asymptomatic to malabsorption in severe cases. The only treatment option currently available to patients is a life-long gluten free diet.
