Three nurse educators, who met at the American Nurses Association Nursing Care in Life, Death, and Disaster Conference, collaborated on a multimedia conferencing project to teach nursing students about disaster response. This case study examines two outcomes of this project. The project provided students in a disaster nursing course in Indiana an opportunity to meet faculty who helped establish and maintain a special needs shelter in Texas following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It also demonstrated, through the use of technology, the ability of nurse faculty to share their expertise with colleagues and students residing in different geographical locations.

Information literacy, evidence-based practice (EBP), and informatics are fundamental to delivering culturally competent, safe patient care. Yet most nursing schools continue to educate students in traditional ways; only a minority integrate high-fidelity simulations, require evidence-based literature to support nursing interventions, identify the five core competencies for healthcare professions delineated by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and incorporate the electronic health record (EHR) to stimulate critical thinking and decision making. The Health Information Technology Act (2009) requires all healthcare facilities to fully adopt EHRs by 2014. This will change how nurses practice, underscoring the importance of teaching students about informatics and …

In this article, the authors share their experiences with the creation and implementation of an online self-paced information literacy instruction for graduate students of nursing. Before You Write: Six Keys to success is a non-credit required online course attached to the Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) graduate nursing program. The rationale behind the creation of the course was to help graduate students recognize areas where their information literacy skills may be lacking or have become outdated and provide them with tools to increase their proficiency, while still early in their first semester of the program. It consists …

This article provides evidence to suggest that mental health nurses may not be as competent in medicines management as they believe themselves to be. A psychological model of skills awareness is used throughout the article to offer a theoretical explanation of this putative deficit and provide discussion of the possible causes. Training directed towards improving medicines management skills will be introduced. Training such as this is essential if mental health nurses are to offer the best care to those in receipt of their services and make best use of the opportunities provided by prescribing legislation
