Thinking Long-Term: Nursing Education On Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics, Arslan Rashid
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Schizophrenia cases and their associated healthcare costs have drastically increased over time in the U.S. Antipsychotic non-adherence is a primary contributor to the high rates of relapse and rehospitalization among the schizophrenic adult population. The development of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) has positively impacted medication adherence, however, this treatment modality is still underemployed in practice due to barriers, such as physician and patient negative attitudes toward LAIs and lack of education. Nurses are in a great position to address these barriers as they serve as mediators between providers and patients. This literature review aims to discover evidence that LAI education …

Focused Interventions To Decrease Inpatient Falls, Alyssa Nicole Watchmaker Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Falls are the most commonly reported safety incidence in the hospital setting (Morris R. et al., 2017). Because falls may be a result of many factors, evidence shows that multicomponent fall interventions best reduce fall rates (Bargmann et al., 2020; Dykes et al., 2010; Dykes et al., 2020; Strini et al., 2021). In this project, a needs assessment identified a need for fall prevention strategies to reduce fall rates on inpatient units.
Setting: A step-down/telemetry Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (CVI) (15 beds) and Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) (12 beds) in a suburban private hospital.
Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based project …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: The recent legalization, in Canada, of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) places additional responsibility on undergraduate nursing educators to prepare their students for such encounters. Undergraduate students lack familiarity with death and dying, most of which takes place outside the home in health care institutions. How well these future providers identify and communicate with and care for these patients depends on their educational preparation. Educators, along with nursing regulatory bodies, require more research to prepare curriculum and policies, respectively.
Purpose: This study aimed to gain a better understanding of the experiences and perceptions of nursing students on MAiD, their …

Education For Primary Care Providers On Advance Care Planning, Lindsey Ward
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Advance care planning (ACP) is a discussion of a patient’s end-of-life healthcare wishes. Its purpose is to indicate these wishes clearly should the patient be unable to make their decisions known to providers and family members due to a sudden health decline or medical emergency. Healthcare providers, specifically nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians in the primary care setting, are well-positioned to facilitate these conversations with their older adult patients. However, research states that limited provider knowledge of and confidence in implementing ACP are significant barriers to its application in practice.
Problem: At a primary care clinic in Midtown …
