Selection Of Graphic Symbol Collections By Speech And Language Pathologists For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Vasiliki Hadjicharalambous, Donald R. Fuller, Eliada Pampoulou

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Graphic symbol collections are often implemented in assessment and interventions with clients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The selection of the optimal collection is considered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) a challenging task. Since limited literature exists on the factors that guide this selection specifically for clients with ASD, this study aimed to explore those in detail, for which a qualitative design was followed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with SLPs who shared their views on the factors that affect this selection. A thematic analysis of the interview transcripts took place. The outcomes showed that SLPs focus on multiple factors, grouped as …

Influence Of Access To Public Parks On Mortality Among Older Adults In The United States, Jiaying Dong Dec 2023

Influence Of Access To Public Parks On Mortality Among Older Adults In The United States, Jiaying Dong

All Dissertations

Research shows the health benefits of green spaces are universal, but there's a noticeable disparity in their distribution in the U.S., especially between urban and rural areas. Marginalized groups, particularly those of lower economic status or racial minorities, often have limited access to these spaces. This inequity could be more impactful on the elderly, who are more vulnerable to health issues. However, specific health benefits of green spaces for seniors are not well defined. This study examines the correlation between park access, mortality in those over 65, and income disparities across all U.S. counties.

The study employed a quantitative approach …

Examining The Parallel Mediating Effect Of Emotion Dysregulation And Eating Beliefs In The Association Between Low Self¬-Esteem And Binge Eating Behaviours, Farah Al Mohammed Nov 2023

Examining The Parallel Mediating Effect Of Emotion Dysregulation And Eating Beliefs In The Association Between Low Self¬-Esteem And Binge Eating Behaviours, Farah Al Mohammed

Theses

Research in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) around the causes and non-pharmacological treatment options of binge eating behaviours and other eating disorders is limited. Moreover, given the documented increase in binge eating behaviours which, in turn, is associated with two additional eating disorders (i.e., binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa), there is an urgent need to understand the factors that are implicated in the causation and maintenance of binge eating behaviours in the UAE. A comprehensive understanding of these factors will assist psychotherapists and other mental health professionals in tailoring the interventions that they provide in the treatment and management …

The Lived Experiences Of Faculty Conducting Post-Simulation Debriefing In Nurse Practitioner Programs, Jodi Borden Duncan Jun 2023

The Lived Experiences Of Faculty Conducting Post-Simulation Debriefing In Nurse Practitioner Programs, Jodi Borden Duncan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Simulation-based education is a teaching–learning pedagogy widely used in nursing programs today. While much research has been done on student perceptions of simulation and the fact most learning occurs in the post-simulation debriefing session, little research has been done on how learning takes place in debriefing. Nurse practitioner faculty also use simulation as a teaching methodology, but the implementation of debriefing methods and faculty experiences with debriefing sessions are not known. As simulation may not be counted as direct clinical hours in nurse practitioner programs, more research must be done before the substitution of hours can be considered. The substitution …

The Storytelling Cure: Medicine And Narrative From Galen To Shahrazad And Rousseau, Ryan A. Milov-Cordoba

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Are stories healing? This dissertation introduces and explores an idea that I call “the storytelling cure.” With this term I capture a set of related notions about the healing power of stories that span literary studies, intellectual history, philosophy, and medical practice. Through a comparative study I make the case for “the storytelling cure” as a cross-cultural, multiconfessional, and multilingual phenomenon of great age, complexity, and power, worthy of the most sustained attention by the contemporary field of Comparative Literature. Concretely, this dissertation presents three extended case studies of “storytelling cures” from three different kinds of texts (case history, frame …

Promoting Health Literacy To Aging Christians To Combat The Scourge Of Euthanasia Through The Church, Willie Mae Corley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The many dilemmas that occur in the medical care of chronically ill seniors raise the question of whether senior populations have become the new black. The research seeks to provide an evidence-based review of limited health literacy among elderly African American Christians regarding diagnoses and medical treatments, which has resulted in unethical Christian practices becoming a norm. The researcher adapted the health literacy framework of Paasche Orlow and Wolf’s view of three distinct causes that influence health literacy: the access and utilization of health care, the patient-provider relationship, and self-care. The problem is that Victory Church members may not understand …

Drug-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae; Identification Of At-Risk Groups In Florida By Regional Variation, Scott August Herber

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been on the rise in the State of Florida since 2013. Florida currently follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for identifying those at-risk for gonorrhea and drug resistant gonorrhea infections. These groups are narrowly defined and do not consider the different population dynamics throughout the State. This study examined the question of who is at-risk for contracting drug resistant strains of gonorrhea in the eight different regions of Florida based on the prescribed use of last-line-of-antibiotic-defense. Florida’s Surveillance Tools and Reporting System provided 12 years of secondary data from 2007 to 2018. The data …

Networks Of Networks: An Essay On Multi-Level Biological Organization, Vladimir N. Uversky, Alessandro Giuliani Jan 2021

Networks Of Networks: An Essay On Multi-Level Biological Organization, Vladimir N. Uversky, Alessandro Giuliani

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The multi-level organization of nature is self-evident: proteins do interact among them to give rise to an organized metabolism, while in the same time each protein (a single node of such interaction network) is itself a network of interacting amino-acid residues allowing coordinated motion of the macromolecule and systemic effect as allosteric behavior. Similar pictures can be drawn for structure and function of cells, organs, tissues, and ecological systems. The majority of biologists are used to think that causally relevant events originate from the lower level (the molecular one) in the form of perturbations, that “climb up” the hierarchy reaching …

Peoples’ Experiences With Birth Doulas, Emily A. Gunderson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Birth doulas, as a non-medical resource for people going through the birthing process, have seen overall positive reception by providing a service otherwise missing from the recently medicalized birth environment (Gruber et al. 2013, Steel et al. 2015); this coincides with a time when fathers are being asked to play a more active role in their child’s birth (Coltrane 1996, Odent 2009). However, while we know a little about how mothers experience the services of a birth doula and how fathers experience birth generally, we have yet to find out how birthing people, both partnered and un-partnered, make sense of …

Dialect Variation Assessment In Speech-Language Pathology, Maliah Wilkinson May 2020

Dialect Variation Assessment In Speech-Language Pathology, Maliah Wilkinson

Honors Theses

During speech and language assessment, speech language pathologists often utilize tools from sociolinguistics to differentiate between accent and dialect variation from actual speech or language impairments. Perceptual dialectology, is one of these tools. This method of research seeks to investigate the linguistic perspectives of various populations in specific situations (Montgomery, 2012, p. 638). To investigate the perspectives of college students, linguists, and speech-language pathologists surveys analyzed they perceptions of dialects in various settings and their backgrounds. Results from the surveys indicate linguists who participated have educational experience with dialects but not dialect assessments. While speech-language pathologists, have certification that insists …

Subjective Visual Vertical And Otolith Compensation: Evaluating Off-Axis Rotation Stimulus In Healthy Controls, Eva Price May 2019

Subjective Visual Vertical And Otolith Compensation: Evaluating Off-Axis Rotation Stimulus In Healthy Controls, Eva Price

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The vestibular system senses changes in head position and is responsible for the brain’s perception of verticality. Vestibular dysfunction is caused by deficits in the semicircular canals and/or otolith end-organs with resulting symptoms including dizziness, vertigo, and unsteadiness. Current vestibular rehabilitation focuses on compensation of the semicircular canal-mediated vestibulo-ocular reflex through gaze and balance exercises. Little is known about rehabilitation of otolith organ function, yet research findings suggest that fall risk may be related to otolith dysfunction. A recent case study demonstrated improvement of vertical perception and balance following off-axis rotation in a rotary chair, showing that such stimulation may …

An Investigation Of Glycolysis, Metabolic Acidosis, And Lactate’S Role In Cellular Respiration, Edward L. Kerr Iii Apr 2019

An Investigation Of Glycolysis, Metabolic Acidosis, And Lactate’S Role In Cellular Respiration, Edward L. Kerr Iii

Honors College Theses

Distance runners and coaches, when discussing fatigue and soreness after a competition and intense training, typically blame lactic acid. Most often the origins of these beliefs have been handed down to the coach or athlete by their coach, who heard it from their coach, and so on. In that respect, the notion that lactic acid was the cause of the aftereffects of intense physical activity was accurate, based on the knowledge available when the theories were created in 1922 by Meyerhoff and Hill who won the Nobel Prize for their discoveries. However, over the last century, advancements in research have …

Does Facial Physiognomy In The Context Of Anoccupational Safety And Health Message Predict Outcomes?, Ian Parker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Physiognomy, the practice of looking to another person’s outward facial appearance to unmask the inner character of that person, has had a diverse historical impact within art, medicine, theology, anthropology, law, criminology, political history, psychology, psychiatry, and popular culture, since it was conceptualised in Greece during the 5th and 4th centuries B.C (Physiognomy, 1999-2009, 2009a). Aristotle, the prominent Greek philosopher, penned many chapters on physiognomic properties and touched upon strength/weakness, genius/stupidity, and other trait characteristics and their opposites in so far as such characteristics were associated with facial form (Physiognomy, 2006, 2009b).

In more modern times, facial recognition and evaluation …
