NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Post-Hospitalization Primary Care Follow-Up Abstract

Title: Characteristics that are associated with primary care follow-up and discharge summary receipt post-hospitalization in adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

Background: Transition from an inpatient to an outpatient setting is a high risk time for patients. Studies in the general population find that poor post-hospitalization primary care follow-up results in higher rates of readmissions – a widely used indicator of healthcare quality. There is no research that evaluates post-hospitalization primary care follow-up or discharge summary receipt in the IDD population.

Objective: To explore the demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical characteristics that are associated with whether …

Physical Mobility Impairment And Risk For Cardiovascular Disease, Mary Wilby Oct 2019

Physical Mobility Impairment And Risk For Cardiovascular Disease, Mary Wilby

School of Nursing and Health Sciences Faculty Work

Background: People with disabilities (PWD) often self-report reduced access to preventive health services and poorer health than people without disability. Risk factors for chronic disease are more prevalent in PWD, increasing risk for secondary conditions including cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: Logistic regression was used to analyze data from the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey to explore the relationship between disability with mobility impairment and CVD.

Results: Difficulty walking and climbing stairs significantly predicted concomitant CVD and diabetes in logistic regression models.

Conclusion: Information from this study may be useful in addressing CVD risk for adults with mobility impairments.

Development Of An Online Resource Manual And Online Protocol To Facilitate Care Coordination, Leonore Bingham

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Persons with disabilities tend to be in poorer health compared to those without disabilities, and timely coordination of care is essential for maintaining optimal health and wellness. The problem addressed in the Care Coordination Referral Project was the lack of timely access to health care and preventive care services for clients with disabilities in the organization for which this project was developed. Using the appraisal of guidelines research and evaluation II model, the purpose of this DNP project was to analyze and synthesize the evidence-based literature to support the project and develop an online health care resource manual and protocol. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This was a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study.Thyroidectomy is a frequently performed surgical procedure and head and neck extension during this operation facilitates surgery. Patients may experience postoperative neck pain and cervical range of motion (ROM) limitation due to the surgical position following thyroidectomy. It was aimed herein to investigate the short-term effects of kinesiotaping(KT) applied to the cervical spine on neck pain, ROM, and disability in patients following thyroidectomy. Materials and methods: A total of 74 patients were randomly assigned to be treated with either KT (Group 1, n = 37) or sham taping (Group 2, n = 37) …
