Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 Syndromes In Japan, Shin-Ichiro Takai, Akira Miyauchi, Hideo Matsumoto, Tatsuro Ikeuchi, Tetsuro Miki, Kanji Kuma, Yuichi Kumahara

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Through nationwide surveys, we collected and analyzed 242 patients of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Included were 40 patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN-2A), six patients with MEN-2B, and 36 patients with only MTC having a positive family history (82 total patients in the hereditary group). Ten-year survival rates were 81.5% for all cases, and 97.5% and 76.1% for the hereditary and the sporadic group, respectively. Epinephrine/norepinephrine ratio in the urine was found to be a good indicator of the adrenomedullary hyperfunction in patients with hereditary MTC. At least one patient in each family with hereditary MTC had overt …

Speech Results Following Modified Pharyngeal Flap Surgery, Karen S. Zalewski Dec 1984

Speech Results Following Modified Pharyngeal Flap Surgery, Karen S. Zalewski

Masters Theses

It is the purpose of this study to provide a descriptive analysis of 13 patients who have undergone a modified pharyngeal flap surgery completed by one plastic surgeon. Variables associated with the speech of these individuals were based on four measures, including a questionnaire, the Iowa Pressure Articulation Test, the screening portion of the Templin-Darley Test of Articulation, and listener ratings of audio-taped post-surgical speech samples.

Of the eight subject variables studied, two variables were found to be closely associated with speech results. These variables included number of surgeries performed on subjects and number of years in speech therapy. The …

The Role Of The Salivary Glands In Uptake Of Fluoride In Teeth And Bone, Robin E. Vance Dec 1984

The Role Of The Salivary Glands In Uptake Of Fluoride In Teeth And Bone, Robin E. Vance

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The cariostatic capability of fluoride is generally recognized, in addition, it may also have a beneficial effect on bone. Fluoride is thought to exercise its cariostasis through a local effect on teeth, however, the possibility exists that fluoride exerts its action through a systemic mechanism. Fluoride uptake by rat teeth and its effectiveness as a cariostatic substance was studied in parotidectomized, submaxillariectomized, and totally sialoadenectomized animals (both parotid and submaxillary glands removed). The uptake of fluoride in bone was also quantitated for comparison purposes.

Rats were injected daily with 15 micromoles of fluoride dissolved in 0.1 ml saline. The rats …

Predictions Of The Effects Of Nonsurgical Periodontial Therapy : Prospective And Retrospective Identification Of Deteriorating Sites, Rik Achille Vanooteghem Dec 1984

Predictions Of The Effects Of Nonsurgical Periodontial Therapy : Prospective And Retrospective Identification Of Deteriorating Sites, Rik Achille Vanooteghem

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Clinicians rely mostly on clinical signs of disease and radiographic information to evaluate the periodontal condition of patients before and after initial, nonsurgical periodontal therapy. The results of their evaluations lead to decisions that determine the need for further periodontal therapy, often surgical, and may also provide guidelines for subsequent dental restorative treatment.

Thirteen subjects with moderate to advanced periodontal disease received oral hygiene instruction and one single episode of root planing. Three experienced clinicians made made[sic] independent predictions in individual tooth sites of the outcome of this initial therapy. They identified sites that in their opinion probably would not …

The Effect Of Discrimination Training On Salt And Sugar Taste Thresholds Of Preschool Children, Susan M. Castine Dec 1984

The Effect Of Discrimination Training On Salt And Sugar Taste Thresholds Of Preschool Children, Susan M. Castine

Masters Theses

Using a single-subject A-B-C-D design, this study examined NaCl and sucrose taste thresholds in water, tomato juice, and milk with four 4-year-old children. Taste thresholds were determined by presenting several concentrations of an adulterant (i.e. NaCl, sucrose) in each vehicle, in blocks of ten trials. Subjects evaluated each taste sample by pressing one of two levers (Yes/No response). Detection threshold was defined as the level at which there was 50% correct responding. During Baseline, subjects received no feedback regarding the accuracy of their response. During the differential reinforcement phase, subjects received reinforcement following each correct response. Results suggested that detection …

Temporomandibular Joint Problem : Report Of Cases., Picharn Chamnannidiadha

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Pain from mastication can be experienced as a discomfort about the face and mouth induced by function and parafunction of the jaws. Masticatory pain has its source in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and/or masticatory muscles, and is therefore, directly related to masticatory functions. The main symptom of the myofascial pain dysfunction (MPD) syndrome is a unilateral dull ache of myofascial origin arising from the so- called myofascial trigger zone, located within a muscle or its tendinous at- tachments. This paper intends to report the management of two cases of idi- opathic facial pains such as TMJ or MPD syndromes, with an added …

Factors Explaining The Use Of Health Care Services By The Elderly, Paula Diehr, Connie Evashwick Aug 1984

Factors Explaining The Use Of Health Care Services By The Elderly, Paula Diehr, Connie Evashwick

Paula Diehr

The Anderson model of health services utilization, which relates use of service to predisposing, enabling, and need factors, has not often been applied to an elderly population. In this study, the factors of the Andersen model were used prospectively to predict utilization for a population sample of 1,317 elderly persons. Taken alone, the NEED construct was the most important single predictor of use of physician services, hospitalizations, ambulatory care, and home care. PREDISPOSING factors were better predictors of the use of dental services. Some of the variables studied were not related to utilization in the direction that would have been …

Effects Of Dentin Chips, Hydroxyapatite, And Demineralized Dentin As Apical Plugs, D. Wylie Brandell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two mm plugs of demineralized dentin, hydroxyapatite, or dentin chips were condensed into the apical perforations of 48 anterior teeth of eight adult cynamolgus monkeys. The remainder of the canals were obturated with gutta percha and Grossmans sealer using lateral condensation technique. The degree of hard tissue formation and inflammation was evaluated at three and six months. No significant changes were noted between various materials at three months. However, after six months, the samples with apical plugs of hydroxyapatite had more hard tissue formation and less inflammation than others.
