This research delves into the relationship between staffing levels during a crisis in the healthcare workforce and the mental well-being of long-term care workers, with a specific focus on variables such as burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction. With increasing workforce shortages, the attention to providing quality care during this tumultuous period has become increasingly urgent. OBJECTIVE: Oral health conditions mainly cavities and tooth decay had been implicated in oral cavities neoplasm incidence, complications, prognosis, and survival. The current study aimed to assess the knowledge and skills of oncology nurses, prior to the application of the training and education module on oral hygiene, and thereafter re-assessment.

MATERIALS & METHODS: A repeated measure, the non-experimental design was used to assess the knowledge and skills of nursing staff. The study was conducted at 5 Hope, 6 Hope, and 5 Clarke, Baptist Hospital of Miami, with 145 nurse participants in the pretest assessment, while 63 nurses completed …

The activities of daily living (ADLs) is a term used to collectively describe fundamental skills that are required to independently care for oneself such as eating, bathing, and mobility. The term activities of daily living was first coined by Sidney Katz in 1950. ADL is used as an indicator of a person’s functional status. The inability to perform ADLs results in the dependence of other individuals and/or mechanical devices. The inability to accomplish essential activities of daily living may lead to unsafe conditions and poor quality of life. Measurement of an individual’s ADL is important as these are predictors of …

Background: Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) frequently care for patients and their families at the end of life (EOL). Providing high-quality EOL care is important for both patients and families, yet ICU nurses face many obstacles that hinder EOL care. Researchers have identified various ICU nurse-perceived obstacles, but no studies have been found addressing the progress that has been made for the last 17 years.

Objectives: Explore perceptions and attitudes of nurses in regard to antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), their roles as nurses, and identify differences in perceptions and attitudes across paediatric and adult settings. Methods: Electronic survey administered to nursing staff across three public Australian tertiary institutions with AMS facilitated by a shared electronic approval and decision support system. Results: Overall 65% (93/142) of nurses who completed the survey were familiar with the term AMS, and 75% recognised that they were expected to have a role alongside other disciplines, including ward pharmacists (paediatric 88%, adult 73%; p = 0.03). Workplace Violence Against Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study Of Ghanaian Nurses, Isaac Mensah Boafo, Peter Hancock

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The aim of this study was to document the incidence, sources, and effects of workplace physical violence against Ghanaian nurses. Self-report questionnaires were completed by 592 nurses employed in public general hospitals in Ghana. Participants were selected using a combination of purposive and random sampling techniques. Nine percent of the participants experienced physical violence in the 12 months preceding the study. The majority of perpetrators were relatives of patients. Chi-square tests suggested significant relationships between type of hospital and workplace physical violence, and between intention to quit the nursing profession and workplace physical violence. Union Wages, Rents, And Skills In Health Care Labor Markets, Barry T. Hirsch, Edward J. Schumacher

Health Care Administration Faculty Research

We examine the effect of unions on the earnings of health care workers, with emphasis on the measurement and sources of union wage premiums. Using data constructed from the 1973 though 1994 Current Population Surveys, standard union premium estimates are found to be substantially lower among workers in health care than in other sectors of the economy, and to be smaller among higher skill than among lower skill occupational groups. Longitudinal analysis of workers switching union status, which controls for worker-specific skills, indicates a small impact of unions on earnings within both high and low skilled health care occupations. Boonshoft School of Medicine Oral History Project

This is the third in a series of interviews with Ms. Deborah Richardson, third year medical student in the Wright State University School of Medicine. In this interview, Ms. Richardson continues her discussion of her experiences as an undergraduate medical student at Wright State University.
