Multivitamin Usage And Anemia In College Students, Jordan Balletto May 2018

Multivitamin Usage And Anemia In College Students, Jordan Balletto

Senior Honors Projects

Multivitamin usage has been shown to be significantly prevalent in the United States amongst adult populations. Recent data suggests that women are more likely than men to regularly consume a multivitamin, and that physically active individuals are more likely to take a multivitamin than those who live sedentary lifestyles. However, there are important, documented behavioral tendencies exhibited by college students that set them apart from the general adult population in terms of dietary intake. College students often partake in poor eating habits such as regularly skipping meals, eating out frequently, eating at fast food restaurants, and snacking on processed foods. …

The Effect Of High Maternal Milk Production During Pregnancy On Neonatal Health And Metabolism, Katelynn Cameron, Maria L. Hoffman Phd

Senior Honors Projects

The efficiency of the dairy industry relies heavily on the production of healthy calves. However, dairy operations experience high rates of calf mortality due to digestive and respiratory issues. One factor that could predispose calves to disease is the effects of maternal programming caused by high maternal milk production during pregnancy. We hypothesized that calves born to high producing dams will exhibit increased oxidative stress as well as increased circulating triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations. Cows (n = 17) that produced ≥ 14,865 kg of milk during their lactations were classified as high producers. Alternately, cows (n = 18) that …

Improving Access To Collegiate Substance Use Prevention Resources, Sarah Danko

Senior Honors Projects

The incidence of substance use has been increasing at an alarming rate and declared a public health epidemic. Certain subpopulations, including the collegiate population, are at an increased risk for developing a substance use disorder. According to The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, 22.9% of college students meet the criteria for a substance use disorder. This rate is markedly high compared to the rate amongst the general public of 8.5%. A number of factors predispose college students to alcohol and substance use disorders. These factors include increased freedom, social pressures, and high-demand academic workload. Despite the scope of …

Leadership Development In The Nursing Student, Jessica Shaw May 2018

Leadership Development In The Nursing Student, Jessica Shaw

Senior Honors Projects

I am your typical type A honors nursing student. In several of my clinical courses, I received constructive criticism regarding my performance. The common theme throughout each rotation was leadership, or the lack thereof. I was itching to do something to break the trend. In our syllabi under expected course outcomes it said things like, “integrate principles of leadership,” and, “assume a leadership role.” To me, this was far too vague and there had never been a mention in the syllabi or the classroom of how leadership is defined or what it should look like in the nursing field. My …

Pharmacist-Patient Communication Techniques, Kanya Shah

Senior Honors Projects

Objective: To examine available literature on patient-provider communication directed specifically to pharmacists and create a succinct guide of communication techniques.

Methods: Two systematic searches were conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, APhA Library, Access Pharmacy, Communication Abstracts (EBSCO), and ComDisDome (Proquest). The first search quantified the literature available relating to communication techniques for non-pharmacist healthcare providers, such as physicians and nurses. The second search examined the information available on communication techniques directed to pharmacists and pharmacy practice. After conducting these general searches, the results were narrowed to clinical trials and review articles. Since the focus of this project was patient …

According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (2016), approximately 3 of every 1000 infants are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears: with 90% of these infants being born to hearing parents. Immediately following the birth of a deaf child, parents are often bombarded with decisions regarding interventions to “fix” their child’s “disability”. This decision can impact how their child will experience the world and others. The situation is a very different stressor when a hearing child is born to deaf parents. Embracing one’s deaf identity and engaging in “deaf …

Priorities: A Film Investigation Into The Quality Of Hiv Education In Ri Public High Schools, Ellis Iacono

HIV infection in Rhode Island is trending in a positive, downward direction as the state continues to emphasize testing and prevention. The Miriam Hospital’s HIV/AIDS Immunology Center is a well-established caregiving facility, providing medical and social support to more than 1,500 Rhode Islanders annually. Despite this progress, there are educational gaps between school districts and an apparent lack of emphasis on HIV education in some RI public high schools. I created a documentary film to better understand the state’s health education standards and how they are presented in curricula. In doing so, I conducted a series of short, on-camera interviews …
