Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For sometime, expansion of the maxillary arch, by means of surgical and mechanical procedures, have been acknowledged with minimal attention directed toward the mandible. In this pilot study a surgical technique was employed in separating the mandible, A-P, at the symphysis. The interosseous void, approximately 10 mm., was then filled with autogenous bone marrow collected from the greater trochanter and the crest of the ilium.
The surgical site was then maintained for a period of eight (8) weeks with the aid of a precast chromium-cobalt splint and titanium mesh placed intradentally and at the symphysis, respectively. Following the stabilization period …

Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Anatid Herpesvirus, Margaret Anne Lewis
Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Anatid Herpesvirus, Margaret Anne Lewis
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Duck plague virus causes a hemorrhagic disease affecting the family Anatidae, resulting in 60-80% mortality in captive flocks. Plaque and neutralization assays for Anatid herpesvirus (AHV) require 5-10 days for completion and are restricted by the seasonal availability of fertile duck eggs. The enzyme linked innnunosorbent assay (ELISA) is rapid and specific and avoids the use of living cells. The Holland strain of AHV was grown on duck embryo fibroblasts and purified by banding on CsCl gradients. The resulting virus was used to raise antisera in prebled New Zealand white male rabbits. Antibody production was confirmed in double diffusion plates …
The Role Of The Parotid Salivary Glands In The Regulation Of Insulin Secretion, Kenneth L. Millard
The Role Of The Parotid Salivary Glands In The Regulation Of Insulin Secretion, Kenneth L. Millard
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Stress of handling, partial or complete sialoadenectomy, and the administration of parotid hormone (PH), sodium fluoride (NaF), or guanidino-succinic acid (GSA) were examined for effects on fasting plasma glucose and insulin or effects on intravenous glucose tolerance in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Basal glucose and insulin were substantially elevated as a result of the stress of translocation in large animals, but were not altered in small animals. A rise in plasma insulin occured in control animals 20 minutes following anesthesia and the removal of a blood sample by cardiac puncture but not in animals that had been handled twice daily for …
Evaluation Of Blissymbolics As A Means Of Communication For The Deaf-Cerebral Palsy Population, Linda Howells
Evaluation Of Blissymbolics As A Means Of Communication For The Deaf-Cerebral Palsy Population, Linda Howells
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purposes of this study are:
- To present the deaf-cerebral palsied population with a more functional means of communication.
- To test the validity of using a non-vocal means of communication, Blissymbolics, when other more traditional methods of teaching communication skills (sign language or verbal communication) have been ineffective.
Blissymbolics has been found to be an effective means of communication with cerebral palsy children who are unable to develop verbal communication skills. However, there is no research in the use of Blissymbolics with the deaf-cerebral palsy population.
The traditional means of communication used with the nonspeaking deaf person (manual sign language) …
The Effect Of Mechanical Plaque Control On The Clinical Parameters Of Human Periodontal Disease, John F. Cercek Jr.
The Effect Of Mechanical Plaque Control On The Clinical Parameters Of Human Periodontal Disease, John F. Cercek Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the degree of healing which takes place in the periodontal tissues as a result of supragingival and subsequent subgingival plaque control attempts without any associated supra- or subgingival instrumentation and root planing.
Seven patients with moderate to severe periodontitis were finally selected for the study. Measurements were made on maxillary and mandibular incisors, cuspids and premolars to establish base line plaque scores, bleeding scores, probing pocket depths, and probing attachment levels. The patients were then instructed in the use of toothbrushes, dental floss and interdental brushes where indicated. Measurements were repeated at …

A Comparative Study Of Tensile Properties In Five Orthodontic Wires, Charles B. Mcdermott
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The tensile properties of .017 x .025" stainless steel. Multiphase, Blue Elgiloy, beta titanium, and Nitinol were tested and compared. All wires were tested in the "as received" condition. Fifteen samples of each type of wire were tested in order to determine the (1) modulus of elasticity, (2) .2% yield strength, (3) ultimate tensile strength, (4) percentage elongation and (5) maximum elastic deflection.
The modulus of elasticity and .2% yield strength are the most important properties to orthodontists because of their influence on the wire's stiffness, strength and range. The ratio of yield strength/modulus of elasticity, termed maximum elastic deflection, …

Posterior-anterior and lateral cephalometric radio graphs were taken at the beginning of treatment (T1), when the appliance was removed (Tprog' x time = nine months) and at retention (T2) and subsequently traced. The T1 …
Bioavailability Of Calcium, Fluoride And Iron In Mechanically-Deboned Beef Fed To Growing Rats, Kathryn Mclaughlin
Bioavailability Of Calcium, Fluoride And Iron In Mechanically-Deboned Beef Fed To Growing Rats, Kathryn Mclaughlin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Weanling rats were fed diets containing raw lyophylized hand-deboned shank beef (HDS) supplemented with CaCO3, retorted lyophylized mechanically deboned shank beef (MDS), or raw lyophylized MDS. Ca in the latter two diets originated from bone during the mechanical deboning process. Ca absorption, Ca retention, bone weight, and bone breaking strength were similar for comparative dietary levels of Ca regardless of the source. Bone ash and Ca content was significantly higher (P < .05) in the MDS 393 (3.93 g Ca/kg diet) diet and in the retorted MDS 460 diet compared with the HDS 488 diet. Relative biological values for the MDS diets calculated relative to the HDS diets ranged from 102 to 132 when the linear regression of Ca consumed, Ca retained, or dietary Ca level vs bone ash or bone Ca content was obtained. The retorted MDS 460 diet contained the highest Fe level and exhibited a lower percent absorption, terminal hemoglobin level, and liver Fe storage. Humerus F content increased as dietary F (also present from bone) level increased. Dietary F level did not determine humerus breaking strength.
