Journal of Wellness
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a significant toll on societal, physical, and psychological health. Emergency physicians (EPs) are susceptible to burnout under ordinary circumstances and may be particularly vulnerable during the pandemic. To reduce pandemic-related burnout, we implemented a residency-led physical wellness initiative and evaluated the effect on burnout among EPs.
Methods: In the spring of 2020, we invited all resident and attending EPs in our department to participate in a four-week physical wellness initiative as part of a prospective study. After completing or opting out of this wellness initiative, EPs responded to an online survey comprised …

A Community Health Initiative: Health To The Power Of You, Stephanie Hendricks
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
In April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the number of visits to ambulatory care practices and was reported to have declined by nearly 60%. The extent of this decline is alarming as outpatient visits help manage chronic diseases in patients, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This trend sparked an interest in pharmacist and student pharmacist, Dr. Cynthia Koh-Knox Sharp and Stephanie Hendricks, respectively, as it offered an opportunity to help serve the Greater Lafayette community. We created Health to the Power of You (HealthYou), which targets two of Lafayette’s neglected populations: community members experiencing …

Facilitating Well-Rounded Clinical Experience For Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Students, Joan Alviar Fraino, Nancy Selix
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
There is a steady increase in demand for mental health services and a lack of providers. Recent societal changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have increased these needs. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) are well suited to offer these services. High-quality clinical PMHNP student experiences are based on well-rounded curricula in a variety of clinical settings. Meeting the need for clinical education and finding high-quality preceptors is especially challenging during the pandemic due to the lack of preceptors and access to care for in-person services. Creative approaches are needed to meet student clinical experience needs.

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China in December of 2019, has impacted nations all over the globe. Given the health disparities which existed within the United States prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, this pandemic continued to pose a significant challenge to the health of the public. The aims of this research study were twofold: (1) to analyze the incidence rates of COVID-19 among different racial and ethnic groups within the United States and (2) to describe the occurrence of diversity within medical texts. Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated health disparities within the United States. Understanding …

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
The SARS-CoV-2 led to a global pandemic, infecting millions of lives within only a short period of time. The symptoms of the disease vary with a subset of the population developing debilitating sequelae. Through the emergency use authorization (EUA), multiple vaccines have been released against the novel virus in record time. Long term and rare sequelae from the vaccine are poorly understood. DeQuervain’s subacute thyroiditis is a self-limiting and painful inflammation of the thyroid gland usually associated with viral infections. We report a rare case of subacute thyroiditis in a healthy 46-year-old woman presenting with a painful swelling in the …

The need for social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic has compromised traditional medical education. Educators and students in low-resource settings face diverse challenges in clinical teaching, learning, and assessment. The pandemic has necessitated a rapid transition from traditional pedagogical strategies to virtual platforms. Challenges in low resource settings include knowledge and training in technology, limited resource allocation for faculty development in virtual teaching methods, and financial constraints limiting the use of available technologies. There is also a lack of constructive alignment between outcomes, instructional strategies, and assessment of curriculum delivery in virtual platforms as the earlier curriculum design was …
Coagulopathy In Covid-19: A Review, Shannon Ginty
Coagulopathy In Covid-19: A Review, Shannon Ginty
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
Recent data has demonstrated that the pathophysiology of severe COVID-19 infection is associated with a significant pulmonary coagulopathy. Thrombotic complications have been reported in approximately 35-45% of patients with severe COVID-19. Entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the host cells leads to dysregulation in inflammatory signalling pathways, disrupting the normal coagulation mechanism. The hypercoagulability with abnormal clot formation is attributed to the inappropriately elevated immune response, culminating in a ‘cytokine storm’ with high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and subsequent thrombosis. The coagulopathy in COVID-19 affects many coagulation parameters such as D-dimer levels, fibrinogen levels, platelet count and prothrombin time. Coagulation parameters must …
