This study follows the decision making process of comparing a traditional business software stack to cloud alternatives, comparing different cloud platforms, and planning a migration. It addresses specific workloads of an example company in the financial services industry and how the tools in a Microsoft 365 subscription support that work. The process of transferring an existing Exchange server and its users to Azure is thoroughly detailed, as is the logic behind certain crucial decisions that are part of that procedure. There are many advantages to adopt cloud computing, however, some important issues need to be addressed, such as cybersecurity, cost-saving, trust, implementation complexity, and cloud provider’s reliability. This study developed a research framework to study the human factors that interact with technical and cybersecurity factors to affect the cloud-computing provider’s performance from the user’s perspective. Research hypotheses were developed and a survey was conducted to test the hypotheses and validate the research framework.

Recent research on cloud computing adoption suggests the lack of a deep understanding of its benefits by managers and organizations. We present a firm-level cloud computing readiness metrics suite and assess its applicability for various cloud computing service types. We propose four relevant categories for firm-level adoption readiness, including technology and performance, organization and strategy, economic and valuation, and regulatory and environmental dimensions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected the demand for information technology (IT) human resources to increase by 13.26 percent between 2014 and 2024. In this survey research, the IT professionals estimated a growth of 34.16 percent in IT human resources over a period of five years from the year 2016. Cloud computing exploits virtualization to provision resources efficiently. Increasingly, Virtual Machines (VMs) have high bandwidth requirements; however, previous research does not fully address the challenge of both VM and bandwidth provisioning. To efficiently provision resources, a joint approach that combines VMs and bandwidth allocation is required. Furthermore, in practice, demand is uncertain. Service providers allow the reservation of resources. However, due to the dangers of over-and under-provisioning, we employ stochastic programming to account for this risk. As these services become more prevalent, data security and privacy concerns will also rise among consumers and the companies who consider using them. Cloud computing providers must establish a sufficient level of trust with their potential customers in order to ease initial fears - and ensure certain compliance obligations will be met - at least to the extent that any such inquiring customer will feel comfortable enough to ultimately take the irreversible step of releasing their sensitive data and personal information into the cloud.

Although there is an increased attention on Cloud Computing in the academic literature in the recent years, most research work focus on technical aspects of cloud computing. Research on consumers’ preferences for cloud services is limited to studies from consulting and industry companies. This paper fills the gap by empirically identifying consumer preferences for cloud service attributes. Using conjoint methods we reveal the relative importance of different attributes of cloud services.
