The Effect Of Moon Phase On Predator And Prey Activity Levels On Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Jeff Schell, Charlotte Milling
The Effect Of Moon Phase On Predator And Prey Activity Levels On Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Jeff Schell, Charlotte Milling
2024 Symposium
Variation in nighttime illumination linked to moon phase has been demonstrated to affect the activity patterns of both prey and predator species. However, evidence of lunarphobia in ungulates is mixed. Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) in Spokane County spans 23,000 acres; features a diverse landscape of channeled scablands, wetlands, and Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa); and is situated within 20 km of the second largest city in Washington. Our objective was to assess the influence of nighttime illumination on activity levels of common mammals on TNWR by quantifying the relationship between moon phase and visitation rate at trail cameras …
The Role Of Exogenous Gibberellic Acid (Ga3) Application In Breaking Seed Dormancy In Clematis Hirsutissima, Ashley Grace Ogle
The Role Of Exogenous Gibberellic Acid (Ga3) Application In Breaking Seed Dormancy In Clematis Hirsutissima, Ashley Grace Ogle
2024 Symposium
Seed germination in plants is controlled by several mechanisms, including the presence of phytohormones like gibberellins, as well as environmental conditions, such as temperature, light, and moisture. Germination of dormant seeds can be promoted by the exogenous application of Gibberellic Acid (GA3). GA3 acts as a natural endogenous regulator of dormancy. Clematis hirsutissima, commonly known as Sugarbowls, in the plant family Ranunculaceae, is an important perennial species that contributes to biodiversity in western prairie ecosystems by providing habitat for pollinators and wildlife; and it is also a species that shows characteristic embryo dormancy. This native to Washington, has been used …
An Itpa Enzyme With Improved Substrate Selectivity, Nicholas E. Burgis, Kandise Vanwormer, Devin Robbins, Jonathan Smith
An Itpa Enzyme With Improved Substrate Selectivity, Nicholas E. Burgis, Kandise Vanwormer, Devin Robbins, Jonathan Smith
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Recent clinical data have identified infant patients with lethal ITPA deficiencies. ITPA is known to modulate ITP concentrations in cells and has a critical function in neural development which is not understood. Polymorphism of the ITPA gene affects outcomes for both ribavirin and thiopurine based therapies and nearly one third of the human population is thought to harbor ITPA polymorphism. In a previous site-directed mutagenesis alanine screen of the ITPA substrate selectivity pocket, we identified the ITPA mutant, E22A, as a gain-of function mutant with enhanced ITP hydrolysis activity. Here we report a rational enzyme engineering experiment to investigate the …

Walleye (Sander Vitreus) Do Not Exhibit An Aggregative Predatory Response To Larval White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus) In The Upper Columbia River In Lake Roosevelt, Washington, Seth A. Barr
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Seasonal prey abundance can drive predatory fishes to aggregate in areas of high prey density. This project aimed to determine whether Walleye (Sander vitreus) exhibit an aggregative predation response to larval White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) drifts in the Lake Roosevelt system which is a reservoir of the Columbia River in Washington State. Populations of sturgeon are threatened worldwide, and are in need of conservation research. Walleye are a popular nonnative piscivorous game fish that were accidentally or illegally introduced to Lake Roosevelt in the 1950’s. Walleye in this study were obtained by gillnetting during White Sturgeon pre-spawn, peak spawn, and …
The Influence Of Anesthesia And Nicotine On Dopamine Signaling In The Rat Dorsal Striatum, Gracie E. Rosenbaum
The Influence Of Anesthesia And Nicotine On Dopamine Signaling In The Rat Dorsal Striatum, Gracie E. Rosenbaum
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The striatum is highly innervated by dopamine neurons and is involved in movement control (dorsal striatum) reward learning (ventral striatum). Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) is a technique that uses microelectrodes (diameter ~5 μm, length ~150 μm) to monitor dopamine signaling in the brain. Although urethane and isoflurane anesthetics are commonly used in in vivo studies, isoflurane’s potential influence on dopamine signaling has not been thoroughly investigated. In addition to this, the addictive nature of nicotine indicates the importance of understanding its impact of dopamine neurotransmission within the different striatal subregions. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (Rattus norvegicus) 300 – 450 grams were …

Revegetation Of Two Drained Reservoirs On The Elwha River Ten Years After Dam Removal, Michael Trier
Revegetation Of Two Drained Reservoirs On The Elwha River Ten Years After Dam Removal, Michael Trier
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The Elwha and Glines Canyon dams on the Elwha River, Washington, USA were removed between 2011 and 2014 after being in place for a century, and at the time were the largest dams ever removed. The resulting dewatering of Lake Aldwell, the reservoir of the Elwha dam, and Lake Mills, the reservoir of the Glines Canyon dam exposed over 270 hectares of land that had been submerged. While several studies have examined the revegetation of these drained reservoirs, none have gone beyond 5 years since dam removal. These studies found that sediment grain size and reservoir landform (valley walls, terraces …
Field And Laboratory Evaluation Of The Interactions Between Pesticides And The Gut Microbiome In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Macee R. Mitchell
Field And Laboratory Evaluation Of The Interactions Between Pesticides And The Gut Microbiome In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Macee R. Mitchell
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) are important pollinators yet are threatened by a combination of factors such as poor nutrition, pathogens, parasites, and pesticide use. Bees encounter numerous pesticides while foraging (e.g. imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide) or in the hive colony (e.g. Tau-fluvalinate, a miticide commonly used to treat Varroa mite parasites). Similar to most organisms, the gut microbiome is important for bee health, metabolism, and behavior, however it is not well known how environmental factors like pesticides impact their gut bacterial symbionts. I hypothesized that 1) pesticide concentrations in bees are correlated with gut bacterial community structure, and 2) …
Sialylation As A Mechanism For Preferential Ligand Binding In Cfs1r, Eric J. Beaulaurier
Sialylation As A Mechanism For Preferential Ligand Binding In Cfs1r, Eric J. Beaulaurier
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Macrophages are immune cells that help provide the first line of defense against a wide range of internal and external insults and create the bridge between innate and adaptive immune responses. When macrophage homeostasis is disrupted, disease states occur. Associated disease states include rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. The survival and proliferation of macrophages is largely controlled by signaling through colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R). Notably, this receptor can be activated by two non-homologous ligands, colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) and interleukin- 34 (IL-34). These two ligands are differentially required for macrophage homeostasis across body systems and …
Impact Of Oxytocin And Tetrahydrocannabinol On Signs Of Fear In The Rat, Jair E. Alvarez Jr.
Impact Of Oxytocin And Tetrahydrocannabinol On Signs Of Fear In The Rat, Jair E. Alvarez Jr.
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
BACKGROUND: Oxytocin (OXT) has been used as a post-treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research suggests that pre-treatment of intranasal OXT attenuates signs of fear in rats; however, the impact of intraperitoneal (i.p) OXT pre-treatment on signs of fear in rats is unknown. We also explored the effects of delta-9 (psychoactive component of cannabidiol) and delta-8 (delta-9 isomer) THC pre-treatment on attenuating signs of fear in the rat. METHODS: For each experiment, male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups, (n=8 per group); 1.) controls (vehicle and no foot shock), 2.) shock (vehicle and foot shock), 3.) low dose …
Investigating The Relationships Between Biotic And Abiotic Factors Affecting Migratory Behavior In Westslope Cutthroat Trout Within The Priest River System, Kyle M. Keenan
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Numerous salmonid species demonstrate diverse life histories, encompassing both resident and migratory behaviors. Migratory life histories play a pivotal role in maintaining metapopulations for various reasons, facilitating genetic exchange between populations and yielding larger-sized females with increased fecundity relative to residents. This study took place in northern Idaho, within the lower Priest River system, which is highly susceptible to degrading habitat. Previous research has discovered this system as a significant contributor to migratory Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus lewisi, WCT) in the Lake Pend Oreille and Priest River systems. Expanding on these results, we compared four Priest River tributaries that produced …
