The Effects Of Heat Stress On High Oil Corn, Summer Goldman Dec 2005

The Effects Of Heat Stress On High Oil Corn, Summer Goldman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

High oil corn (HOC) is essentially dent corn that has been selected for high oil content in the scutellum. It is a value-added crop that can potentially offer a premium price for producers. Though southeastern U.S. producers have not had problems achieving sufficient yields, the oil content necessary for premium prices has been elusive. One of the most evident differences between these growers and their northern counterparts is the climate. Temperatures during the reproductive growth and grain fill periods are higher in southern latitudes. A two-part research project was conducted to further investigate the significance of temperature on oil content. …

Effects Of Stretching On Jumping Performance, Carisa Chavez Aug 2005

Effects Of Stretching On Jumping Performance, Carisa Chavez

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Stretching has been a part of warm-up for a very long time. Some recent research has shown that stretching could possibly hinder performance and others have shown it enhances performance. The purpose of this study was to examine whether stretching has an effect on vertical jump, and if so, how long the effects last. Twenty Western Kentucky students (10 M and 10 F) performed three trials each. There was a non-stretching group, a pre-stretching group and a between-stretching group; each of the subjects performed all three. The stretching protocol included a static stretching routine of the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, quadriceps, …

A Comparison Of Intrauterine And Cervical Artificial Insemination Rods On Farrowing Rate And Litter Size In Artificially Mated Sows, Robert Fitzgerald May 2005

A Comparison Of Intrauterine And Cervical Artificial Insemination Rods On Farrowing Rate And Litter Size In Artificially Mated Sows, Robert Fitzgerald

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This experiment compared the effects of two artificial insemination (AI) rods on farrowing rate and number of piglets born per litter. Three hundred eighty-nine sows were allotted into two experimental groups based on parity, body condition, and breed of sire influence of the sows. One hundred ninety-three matings were performed using the experimental intrauterine rod, and one hundred ninety-six matings were performed using the traditional cervical rod as the control. Total number of piglets born per litter was measured after each sow farrowed, and the farrowing rates were calculated at the end of the study. Farrowing rates were 68% and …

Sunflower, Helianthus Annus L., Cut Flower Variety Trial, Pavani Vuppalapti May 2005

Sunflower, Helianthus Annus L., Cut Flower Variety Trial, Pavani Vuppalapti

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sunflower, Helianthus annus L., native of North America, is widely grown for oil, bird feed, and human snacks. More recently, sunflower is gaining acceptance as an ornamental potted plant and as a cut flower in the florist industry. The objectives of the present study were: 1. To evaluate diverse cultivars of sunflower for their performance under field and greenhouse conditions. 2. To explore the potential of sunflower in the local florist industry. 3. To exhibit the diversity of sunflower characteristics to the public. In 2004, studies were conducted during the spring and summer in the field and during fall and …

Alfred Russel Wallace: Past And Future [Guest Editorial], Charles H. Smith Jan 2005

Alfred Russel Wallace: Past And Future [Guest Editorial], Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) has for many years been standing in the shadow of his more famed co-discoverer of the principle of natural selection, Charles Darwin. Despite outward similarities between the two men’s formulation of the principle, Wallace had fit his appreciation of natural selection into views on evolution that were quite different from Darwin’s. A closer examination of what Wallace had in mind suggests a model of process in which natural selection per se acts as the negative feedback mechanism (actually, a ‘statespace’) in the relation between population and environment, and environmental engagement as made possible by …

Phylogenetics Of Rubus Ursinus And R. Macraai (Rosaceae): Evidence Of Hybrid Origin, Brittany Sutherland Jan 2005

Phylogenetics Of Rubus Ursinus And R. Macraai (Rosaceae): Evidence Of Hybrid Origin, Brittany Sutherland

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study had three goals: elucidating the affinity between Rubus ursin us and Rubus macraei, assessing the hybrid origin of both species, and determining closely related species that may be putative parents. To this end, three chloroplast DNA regions-rp1l6, trnK, trnL-tmF-and two nuclear DNA regions-the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and granule-bound starch synthase (GBSSI)-were sequenced for five R. ursinus individuals, including 6x, 8x, l lx, 12x, and 13x ploidy levels, and R. macraei, which is hexaploid. Sequence data were placed into an existing framework of a Rubus phylogeny. Three phylogenies were created that demonstrate a close association between R. …

Does Genertic Variation Support Geographical And Morphological Patterns? A Phylogentic Interpretation Of Mentha Longifolia (Lamiaceae) Using Molecular Data, Kate L. Hertwick Jan 2005

Does Genertic Variation Support Geographical And Morphological Patterns? A Phylogentic Interpretation Of Mentha Longifolia (Lamiaceae) Using Molecular Data, Kate L. Hertwick

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Traditional taxonomic studies ofMentha longifolia (European horsemint) have utilized geographical and morphological criteria to classify and define the species. This has led to the recognition of 22 different M longifolia subspecies from Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and southern Africa. Using nucleotide sequences of chloroplast and nuclear DNA regions of 23 accessions of M. longifolia, we assessed levels of genetic divergence to determine if discrete groupings exist. The results ofthis phylogeographic study indicate that there is sufficient variation among samples to warrant splitting of M. longifolia into several different taxa. For example, two subspecies from South Africa share distinct …

Molecular Mechanics Analysis Of Platinum Compounds Chelated To Methionine Residues, Donald James Chapman Jan 2005

Molecular Mechanics Analysis Of Platinum Compounds Chelated To Methionine Residues, Donald James Chapman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Recently, interest in certain platinum compounds has increased significantly due to the discovery that they have either anticancer properties, proteolytic properties, or both. In order to find platinum compounds with similar properties that work better or can be synthesized less expensively, one can use computerized molecular mechanics can be used. In this study a modified AMBER force field was used to find the most stable conformations ofplatinum (II) N, N diethylethylenediamine (Et-en) compounds chelated to various amino acid residue combinations. Using comparisons with other platinum compounds, and a bis-guanine chelate as the standard for all compounds, this research found that …
