The Price Of Open: Understanding Article Processing Charges And Nsu's Cost-Saving Agreements, Keri Baker

Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

Open access publishing can raise your work's visibility and impact — but it often comes with a price tag in the form of Article Processing Charges (APCs) that can run into the thousands of dollars. This session, designed for NSU faculty, unpacks the true cost of “open” and shows you how to avoid paying it. We'll cover the Scholarly Communications services available through the Alvin Sherman Library, walk through the major open access models (Gold, Green, Diamond, Hybrid) and how their costs differ, and — most importantly — detail the transformative “Read and Publish” agreements NSU currently holds with publishers …

Using The Citation Patterns To Establish Associations Among Poets: A Method For Joint Sentiments And Topics Of Allusion Words, Xiaomin Li, Xiaoqin Zhang, Hao Wang, Wenru Bu, Shi Bin Oct 2026

Using The Citation Patterns To Establish Associations Among Poets: A Method For Joint Sentiments And Topics Of Allusion Words, Xiaomin Li, Xiaoqin Zhang, Hao Wang, Wenru Bu, Shi Bin

Journal of Scientific Information Research

[Purpose/significance] Establishing literary connections between poets from the perspective of allusion citation is of great significance for exploring information on unknown poets and understanding their works. [Method/process] This study investigates poets' citation patterns from the perspective of allusion citation, integrating both emotional and thematic features. Regarding emotional features, we construct a sentiment recognition model for poetic lines using the Dictionary of Tang Poetry Appreciation, which combines poems with their corresponding critical annotations. The model predicts the sentiment of each poetic line, which is then aligned with the sentiment of the cited allusion to derive citation sentiment. By quantifying the distribution …

Resources Shaping Science Teachers' Design And Implementation Of Scientific Argumentation Instruction: A Systematic Review, Nannan Fan, Eric A. Kirk, Minghui Zhu, Troy D. Sadler

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Scientific argumentation is a core scientific practice recognized by multiple national science standards, yet many science teachers experience challenges integrating it into their classrooms. This systematic review examined the resources identified by research as shaping teachers’ argumentation instruction and how these resources were reported to support teachers’ classroom practice. Guided by an adapted version of the Pedagogical Design Capacity Framework, we analyzed 79 empirical studies published between 1983 and 2025. Resources were categorized as personal, instructional, or contextual, and their specific supportive aspects were grouped according to their reported contributions. Personal resources included teachers’ beliefs, knowledge of argumentation, and pedagogical …

Is Artificial Intelligence Intelligent? Trust, Verification, And The Responsible Use Of Al In Libraries, Norman Desmarais, Janice Schuster

Library Faculty and Staff papers

We live in an age of alternate realities. If we do not like the current situation, we can pick or rearrange facts to suit our worldview. It appears our information systems follow suit, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). Developers in the Al industry generally want friendly Al that does what the human user wants (as long as it is not too naughty). They do not want Al that says "I do not know," so they design models to be fluent, not factual. Consequently, the engines confidently invent citations, titles, or people if not constrained or verified, a phenomenon called AI …

An Enduring Mission, Expanding Responsibilities: Reexamining Educating Students To Think Forty Years Later, Victoria Therriault

Learning Hub

This article reexamines the role of school librarians forty years after the publication of Educating Students to Think. It argues that the central mission of school librarianship, helping students locate, evaluate, synthesize, and use information thoughtfully, has remained consistent while librarians’ responsibilities have expanded. The article connects this mission to contemporary practices including inquiry learning, instructional collaboration, digital and media literacy, AI literacy, digital citizenship, equitable access, and instructional leadership. It also presents an updated framework and practical strategies for applying these responsibilities in modern school library programs.
