Using Student Feedback To Improve Course Specific Libguides Content, Karen W. Brown

Librarians feel that LibGuides provide the opportunity to create user centered and intuitive research guides for students. However, relatively little feedback has been gathered from LibGuides’ intended audience. A LibGuides evaluation was conducted for upper level History courses during Fall 2008. The evaluation is an initial attempt to determine whether students found their course LibGuide useful, how many times during the semester a student accessed the LibGuide for his/her course, and ways in which course specific LibGuides content can be improved. Duke University librarians have collaborated with Instructional Technology staff to integrate subject-specific library resources into Blackboard, the university’s course management system. What began as a manual process on a small scale has grown to an automated process in which every course offered at Duke is linked to a subject-specific LibGuide developed by a subject specialist or instruction librarian. Guides may include instructional tutorials on using Duke’s databases, tips for conducting subject-specific searches and librarians’ contact information. "Libraries for Sustainability" was a networking event held at the AASHE conference on 10/11/2011. Participants mostly included sustainability officers with a handful of librarians. A lively and productive discussion yielded ten ideas for connecting campus libraries as partners in the sustainability movement.

High Yields From Course Guides At Li Ka Shing Library, Pin Pin Yeo

Research Collection Library

At the Li Ka Shing Library, the librarians started building course guides to support students working on their assignments. The reasons for creating course guides and examples of course guides with their usage statistics are explored. The research librarians got high returns from their course guides as shown by usage statistics and unsolicited feedback from faculty. It was a good way to embed the Library and its resources into the courses taught, to increase awareness of library resources and to keep the library visible.

Purpose – This paper seeks to explore the utility of Springshare’s LibGuides platform for special collections repositories and to evaluate the collection guides built by Special & Digital Collections at the University of South Florida in LibGuides.

Design/methodology/approach – This paper explores how academic libraries have used LibGuides previously and provides a case study that suggests new ways for special collections repositories to make the most of the product.

Findings – The simplicity and easy-to-update functionality of LibGuides works well for USF’s Special & Digital Collections collection guides. The flexible API allowed SDC to embed digital content, enable user comments, …

Librarians have long struggled to find user-friendly mediums to provide meaningful information to patrons; using bibliographies, pathfinders, and subject guides with varying degrees of success. Content management systems, such as Springshare’s LibGuides, have recently been developed to facilitate the creation of online subject guides. Special Collections units also struggle with this issue. This article examines how special collections are presented on the Web, the use of LibGuides for special collections, and how the use of LibGuides is facilitating the goal to provide information in a meaningful way by Special & Digital Collections at the University of South Florida Tampa Library.
