Scholar Commons Publications

In fall 2011, the Academic Resources Unit of Tampa Library officially launched Scholar Commons, the University of South Florida’s (USF’s) institutional repository (IR), as a virtual showcase for research and creative energies. Scholar Commons provides digital preservation and free, open access (OA) to all scholarly works produced by the USF Community. Scholar Commons will be a vehicle to drive research communication across disciplines and the globe. This report will review the progress of this initiative through the past fiscal year (FY). Scholar Commons can be accessed at: http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/.

Preserving Content From Your Institutional Repository, Wendy Robertson, Carol Ann Borchert

Digital Scholarship Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Between institutional repositories and hosting journals, many libraries are becoming responsible for scholarly content in new ways. While PDFs are the most common format today, the unique, local, serial content may be in variety of formats. These items may be digitized text, born digital text, audio, video, or images. This presentation will discuss formats that will remain accessible through time (PDF/A, txt, xml) so that content is not locked in proprietary formats. It will also discuss options for backing up items and associated metadata, including simple back-ups, off-site storage of files, LOCKSS, Private LOCKSS Networks, and Portico. The presenters will …

The Role Of Librarians In Academic Success, Claudia J. Dold Jan 2013

The Role Of Librarians In Academic Success, Claudia J. Dold

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Librarians address all levels of information needs for the university: its acquisition, its production, its storage, and instruction for its safe and gainful use. Most of today’s college students have a high degree of computer literacy but are weak in their abilities to determine the quality of the information that is so readily available. Students need to be taught to find, evaluate, and use information in an academically-oriented manner in order to solve complex problems. Good library skills are integral to academic success. In conjunction with research and teaching faculty, librarians create a framework for knowledge acquisition in the evolving …

A Review And Evaluation Of Services And Resources To Engineers: A Case Study Of Outreach And Marketing, Assessment, And Future Directions In A Research Library (In Press), Matt Torrence

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Engineering student and faculty populations present a beneficial and unique challenge to libraries and the information science community. The literature, activities, and resource needs of this group provide insight into a demographic that is often among the early-adopters of new technologies, tools, and methods of sharing information. Despite the often non-bibliographic nature of their research efforts, there are numerous elements of the traditional service model that remain relevant and integral to the engineering research patron base. New methods of live and virtual instruction, the improved promotion of research consultation, and data management are prime targets for efficient and effective service …

Implications Of Voluntary Communication Based On Gender, Education Level And Cultural Issues In An Online Environment, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten Cox Jan 2013

Implications Of Voluntary Communication Based On Gender, Education Level And Cultural Issues In An Online Environment, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten Cox

School of Information Faculty Publications

Because of the method(s) of communication in a particular class, gender and cultural differences can lead to a different mix of voluntary communication in the online or blended class setting from that of a traditional classroom. Given the hybrid nature of courses taught by the School of Infor-mation at the University of South Florida, a comparison can be made among the same students in class using different methods of class communication. Comparisons between graduate, under-graduate and student-athletes in School of Information courses can also be made. This paper ex-amines the differences experienced by students of varying cultural backgrounds in their …
