It can be difficult to find good-quality books on patent topics that serve the needs of non-lawyers. The Nolo and For Dummies books are popular and accessible but do not include the recent changes in patent law and procedure. The wide-range of users served by Patent and Trademark Resource Centers also benefit from books that address the design thinking that is central to successful inventing and the range of IP protection and marketing needed for successful commercialization. A mounting body of evidence suggests that works that are made openly available online are cited faster and more frequently. Clemson now supports this open sharing of research through its institutional repository, TigerPrints. This repository is highly optimized to attract Google and other search engine crawlers, so it makes your patents and other research highly visible on the open web. That said, nothing tops the intricate search capabilities of the library catalog. Lisa Bodenheimer, Jan Comfort, and Andy Wesolek have leveraged the benefits of both of these systems by incorporating patent records into each. Specifically, presenters outline this project from generating …

Collaborate To Innovate: Expanding Access To Faculty Patents Through The Institutional Repository And The Library Catalog, Andrew Wesolek, Jan Comfort, Lisa Bodenheimer

Institutional repositories and library catalogs have long been used to promote and provide access to scholarly articles, monographs, and other “traditional” forms of scholarship. However, faculty at many institutions participate in “non-traditional” forms of research, such as patents. This work explores the use of Clemson University’s institutional repository and library catalog in promoting and providing access to the patents granted to its inventors. More specifically, the authors outline the project from generating metadata for patents, and cross-walking it into a form that can be batch uploaded to a bepress Digital Commons Repository. They then explore the process of harvesting the …

Jan Comfort

Hardly a week goes by without a phone call, an e-mail message, or a visit from a patron who is looking for a patent issued to a family member. Often, the patron does not have complete information, and sometimes has nothing more than a name and a notion that Grandpa once invented something. Ever since the USPTO began providing access to patents online, there has been a steady decrease in patent traffic in our library. I suspect that I am not the only one who has experienced this change. For some this may have resulted in staff reductions, and our time and attention being drawn to other subject areas. So how do we keep up to date on intellectual property matters and make the most of our encounters with inventors? And how do we stay relevant in this electronic environment? I'll share some coping strategies to help all of us - from the …
