This paper will provide an overview of current topics in Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications DS/SC and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill set of electronic resources librarians (ERLs). Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians (CCERL) and those needed for success in DS/SC will form the basis of the author's recommendations for involvement in these new areas.

This is the online, archived version of a presentation I gave at the 29th Annual NASIG Conference in Fort Worth, TX on May 2, 2014. Results have been corrected to reflect an updated understanding of availability. Availability studies estimate the proportion of items in a collection that library users can access. This traditional research method can help librarians find and fix the most significant access problems with electronic resources, and connect patrons with information through better collection development and acquisitions decisions. Availability studies, a systems analysis research method long used to improve access to print resources, have recently been applied to study the causes of electronic resource errors. Students and faculty face numerous barriers to accessing their academic library's subscribed electronic resources, ranging from confusing interfaces to misconfigured knowledge bases and missing metadata.
