The US withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Pacific Partnership (TPP) in January 2017 hasprompted the remaining countries to pursue alternative trade strategies. Australia andJapan have pushed for effectuating the TPP without US participation. The currentefforts focus on seeking consensus on the scope of suspensions over the originalagreement. The TPP-11 countries expect to reach an agreement in principle during theAsia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in November 2017. This article provides an up-to-date examination of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which is poised to become the world’s largest free trade agreement (FTA). It argues that the 16-country mega-FTA will galvanize the paradigm shift in Asian regionalism and build a normative foundation for the Global South in international economic law. Based on intertwined theoretical and substantive claims, this article opens an inquiry into the assertive legalism of developing nations in the new regional economic order. Laos is no stranger to international investment arbitration. Despite its status as one of Southeast Asia's least developed countries, it has had an Investment Law for more than two decades and is also a party to several bilateral and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)-related investment agreements. Purpose: Polanyi in his analysis of market dis-embedding suggests a drift in economic relations from the social to the fictitious. Social Capital Of Directors And Corporate Governance: A Social Network Analysis, Zihan Niu, Christopher C. H. Chen

This Article examines how a director’s social capital might affect his or her behavior, the board’s performance, and corporate governance, as well as the potential normative implications of the director’s social network. We argue that the quality of board performance could be improved where the social network closure within the board is high and there are many non-redundant contacts beyond the board. Network closure can improve trust and collaboration within a board, while external contacts may benefit a company with more diverse sources of information. Toxic ‘haze’ from fires, often burning over dry peatland in Indonesia, has affected millions across Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, as well as parts of the Philippines and Thailand. For Singapore in particular, this slash-and-burn method of clearing land in Indonesia to cultivate crops such as oil palm has been an annual problem since 1972. However, 2015 stands out as the year Singapore experienced one of its worst episodes of haze pollution. Air quality based on the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) plummeted to the ‘very unhealthy’ and ‘hazardous ranges’ for close to 50 days. Singapore suffered an estimated SGD $700 million …

In the light of Singapore’s aspiration to be a centre of legal ideas in the region, it is opportune to examine the Singapore courts’ use of legal scholarship. This article provides a preliminary map of the Singapore Court of Appeal’s citation practices. It provides an overview of the Singapore Court of Appeal’s use or citation of legal scholarship in its decisions over the past 50 years. It identifies and evaluates trends in the Singapore Court of Appeal’s citations of academic material and the types of academic material cited.
