Prehistoric Archeology And Paleoenvironments In Hidalgo And Willacy Counties, South Texas: Results Of The Phase Ii Excavations, C. Britt Bousman, Steve A. Tomka, Gail L. Bailey
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In May 1989 through July 1989, archeological and geomorphological investigations were conducted at five prehistoric archeological sites impacted by drainage ditch construction in Hidalgo and Willacy counties. These investigations were sponsored by Hidalgo County Drainage District No. I and Willacy County Drainage District No. I as part of a continuing program of cultural resources studies along the drainage ditch construction right-of-way. One site, 41WYI40, is situated on a low rise adjacent to a main channel of the ditch and lacks sufficient Holocene sediments to contain archeological materials in good context. However, a tortoise, cf. Gopherus hexagollarus, was recovered, and the …

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter
Readers of this Newsletter will be saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Helen Creighton, Canada's foremost collector of folksongs, on Tuesday, December 12, [1989], in Halifax. She was 90 years old. There is little I can add to Stephen Pedersen's fine article from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald (12/16/89) reprinted below beyond a couple of recollections of my own.

Wild Bill Goes To Washington : A Reassessment Of The Senate Career Of North Dakota's William Langer, Eric P. Bergeson
Theses and Dissertations
William Langer is firmly established as a legend in North Dakota history. The legend began during his controversial terms as attorney general (1916-1920) and governor (1932-1934 and 1936-1938). A maverick in the United States Senate after his election to the upper chamber in 1940, admirers saw him as a civil libertarian and a defender of the "common man." The loyalty and devotion of his constituents increased over the years because of his willingness to do favors for them and because of his considerable campaign skills. However, a study of his papers, the Congressional Record, and newspaper and magazine articles reveals …

Studying Society, Knowing Ourselves, Maine Perspective
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
A looming recession. Escalating health care costs. Ethical responsibility in local government and journalism. The political and economic realities of the Persian Gulf Crisis. Social services for the homeless, families in crisis, and mentally ill. Such issues confront and challenge us on a daily basis. As members of a modern society, it is crucial that we understand ourselves and others. It is important to study society from the individual level to the level of cultures and populations, looking at the individual in interaction with other people, social systems and networks, all in an attempt to understand and appreciate the world …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Pluralism, a concept which is growing in importance at the University, is easily considered in the abstract as a positive but vague goal. The USAID-sponsored CASS (Cooperative Association States for Scholarships) program is playing a significant role in transforming cultural diversity from an abstract ideal to a tangible reality.
