Pipes actually came into existence at the creation of the earth. We do not know how much time elapsed before man became observant and discovered that when the wind blew over the end of a bullrush or a bamboo joint it made a sound. Man tried blowing like the wind and discovered he could blow this small natural pipe better than the wind. From there it was only a matter of time before man became ingenious and discovered that tubes of different lengths gave different sounds. As election day in 1948 drew nearer, political pollsters, pros and amateurs united in predicting victory for Thomas E. Dewey. Only underdog candidate President Truman and, as it turned out, the American electorate disagreed with this consensus.

At the end of 1947 Truman was considered certain for renomination by his party, and the Gallup Poll showed that he would easily defeat either of the two leading Republicans--Governor Dewey and Senator Taft. This short study attempts to define and analyze the comic book thoroughly enough to enable the reader to draw his own conclusions about the unique little magazines. The writer also tries to evaluate the worth and possible place in American culture of comic books. Are comic books a menace, a "noxious mushroom growth" as a critic stated in 1943? Are they a harmless diversion as psychologist William Charles Marston upholds? Do comic books deserve a niche in libraries or should they be burned as trash?
