Using Concept Mapping As A Tool For Conducting Research: An Analysis Of Three Approaches, Simone C.O Conceição, Anita Samuel, Susan M. Yelich Biniecki
School of Education Faculty Articles
Researchers in a variety of disciplines pursue creative ways to explore complex areas of inquiry. This literature review examines the use of concept maps as a unique tool for conducting research. This study embraces an inclusive definition of concept mapping. Three main approaches for conducting research using concept maps as a tool emerged: relational, cluster, and word frequency. These approaches are included in the different phases of research process such as data collection, analysis, and presentation. Each approach revealed strengths and limitations that researchers need to take into account. This discussion broadens the lens of the meaning of concept mapping …

Pulling The Plug On Microscopes In The Anatomy And Physiology Laboratory, Zvi Ostrin, Vyacheslav Dushenkov
Publications and Research
Virtual microscopy (VM) has been widely available for more than a decade, especially in clinical settings and medical schools. In recent years the movement away from conventional optical microscopy (OM) and towards VM has been accelerating and several VM websites are now available online and readily accessible to educators. VM can enhance the instructor’s ability to teach the histology component of anatomy and physiology classes, facilitate student learning, save time for both students and instructors, and ultimately save money that can be more productively used for other facets of the laboratory. The many pedagogical and practical advantages provided by VM …

The Career Center has the privilege of making a difference is someone’s life everyday. We don’t always know when we make that difference but we do know that planting the seeds of change will have an impact. We often hear from students that they met us during a class presentation their first year and remembered that we could help them or that one of our counseling staff helped them to explore a new major, find an internship that changed their path or helped them to find a full-time position or graduate program that launched their career. It is our pleasure …

For Social Justice, We Need To Look In The Mirror., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

One of the most contentious issues in politics in general – and in higher education in particular – is political correctness.
Usually defined as the avoidance of language or actions that are seen as excluding, marginalizing, or insulting groups of people that have been dis- criminated against because of their gender, race, or other identifying factors.
The term is now oftentimes used in a pejorative sense, particularly in conservative circles.
Reading Journals: Preview Assignments That Promote Student Engagement, Productive Struggle, And Ultimate Success In Undergraduate Mathematics Courses, Sarah Nelson
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2017
We spend lots of time searching for the best textbook for students. We want our students to have a reliable and useful resource to reference, as needed. We even ask them to read over certain material before classes. Often, however, we fail to guide our students in how to read the text productively. Incorporating reading journals into your classes is an excellent way to simultaneously develop your students' ability to read mathematical text and capitalize on what the students already have to offer. In this presentation, we will look at how reading journals motivate students in a variety of mathematics …

Developing Citizenship Through Honors, Jacob Andrew Hester, Kari Lynn Besing
Developing Citizenship Through Honors, Jacob Andrew Hester, Kari Lynn Besing
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
For decades, research has shown that higher levels of education correspond to increased interest in politics and civic engagement. Despite the vast amount of scholarly attention, why this link exists is still disputed. One theory about the connection is the civic education hypothesis, which claims that the causal link between education and civic engagement depends not only on the amount of education a person receives but also on the type of curriculum studied. For example, Hillygus argues that “some courses are more likely than others to develop the skills fundamental to political participation” (31). Similarly, Condon argues that the development …

Rethinking Cooperative Extension In Southern Nevada, David F. Damore, Robert E. Lang, Fatma Nasoz, William E. Brown, Jr., Caitlin J. Saladino
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
Cooperative Extension is a partnership funded by federal, state, and county governments that extends University of Nevada services to Nevadans. As the original branch of Nevada’s land-grant institution, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has administered Cooperative Extension Service (CES) since the program’s inception over a century ago. However, as currently organized, CES has limited presence in Southern Nevada and it has not developed programming commensurate with Clark County’s tax contribution to the CES budget. We propose that CES in Southern Nevada be managed by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). As we show, UNLV is already the most …

Diversity More Than Race, Gender In Higher Ed., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
Most people when talking about diversity think
of matters revolving around race and gender, and
while those are obvious and important topics, the
fact of the matter is that the definition of diversity
is much larger.
Today diversity is seen in two dimensions.
The first one is what is called inherent diversity,
the diversity that is beyond people’s control.
Obviously, these issues include race and gender,
but also include national origin, age, sexual orientation,
disability, religious affiliation and socioeconomic
status. Certainly, you can change your
religious affiliation or socioeconomic status over
time, but being raised in a particular religion or …
