Life is full of the unexpected. We like to think we have it all figured out, predicting and organizing the static nature of our daily lives. Yet, in a mere moment, life can knock the wind out of you and it is suddenly changed forever.

It’s hard to cope with change, especially when it is an undesirable outcome. We are constantly fighting with reality, using our denial as a protective shield. We try to face change head on, but there is rarely an instance in which we can prepare ourselves for life-altering experiences.

In this issue you will find stories …

Dear reader, I just consumed a Big Mac, fries and a Dr. Pepper. The cows used for my burger probably grazed where the Amazon Rainforest stood before it was devoured to make way for the crowd of lumbering bovine. The soda was sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Furthermore, I could have walked to the restaurant, but instead I wasted a non-renewable resource by driving.

And I don’t really care.

Our campus community is highly aware of consumption. We’re powered by green energy. Instead of dumping our trays into an all-encompassing receptacle, we sort trash into a variety of containers marked …

As we ring in the New Year resolutions are on everyone’s mind. We set goals to strive for greatness and to improve our relationships, but with all of our attention focused elsewhere we can often forget to reserve a little time and energy for ourselves.

This issue of Klipsun is all about your mind, body and spirit and improving connections between the three. With a healthy mind we are happier, with a healthy body we are stronger and with a healthy spirit we can abolish any obstacles in our path.

So embrace this New Year and follow your bliss.

I’ll be honest. The first quarter I wrote for a publication, I was intimidated by the editors. They seemed so much older, wiser and more experienced than me. It took me a while to have confidence in myself and my abilities, but now here I am an editor.

Many of the people in this issue also have found their confidence, and they are accomplishing amazing things. Unintentionally, this issue features many women and coincides with Women’s History Month. The women at Femeninete are producing heartfelt, poignant pieces about what it means to be a woman. Kelly Hill is living with …

I'm a lists person. I get a strange delight from checking little Nike signs on my daily list of "Things to do."

This issue's stories of triumph, surrender and hope inspired me to create an ongoing list — a list of things to do before I die. Learning 12 languages, solving local hunger and playing the mandolin, while extra ordinary, don't occupy a spot on the list. Other topics, however, such as mystery, money, romance and religion, definitely beg a place.

My list will surely grow just as Klipsun's repertoire will. But when my time is up, those little tingles …

Juggling is an art. Whether it is juggling school and grueling nightshift labor, balancing spirituality and faith with the demands of a material world or the actual craft of juggling, this skill seems to appear as a resurfacing theme in this issue of Klipsun.

Traditionally, the first issue of the quarter is non-themed and contains a variety of stories. This issue appears more as a mosaic than miscellany. Individual snapshots converge to form the greater picture: our world and lives are in a state of continual tension between two effects, ideas or paths.

In the midst of our juggling act, …

It’s tradition at Klipsun to use a theme for the second issue of the quarter. It gives the staff writers a stronger focus on their story because they have a specific set of boundaries given to them by the editors. We decided on the theme of ‘Youth Culture,” hoping for intimate portraits of what it’s like to be a young person in Whatcom County today.

This issue is particularly special, because every Klipsun read er has been young. We’ve all experienced being at awkward ages, trying to discover and establish identities, reaching goals and stumbling through hardships. My hope for …
