Estimating Post-Liquefaction Displacements In Embankment Dams And Priorities Remediation Measures, W. D. Liam Finn Mar 1998

Estimating Post-Liquefaction Displacements In Embankment Dams And Priorities Remediation Measures, W. D. Liam Finn

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Large displacement analysis is used to simulate the failures of flood protection dikes in Hokkaido, Japan, which occurred during the 1993 Kushiro-oki earthquake. These studies served to validate the method of analysis. The analysis was then used to predict displacements in dikes with potential for liquefaction by relating displacements to geometric characteristics of the dikes: height, slopes, and thickness of potentially liquefiable layer. The predictions were verified using dike displacement data from the Nansei-oki earthquake of 1994. The basis for reliable post-liquefaction analysis is a good estimate of the residual strength of the liquefied soils. For this reason, recent developments …

From The Past To The Future Of Landfill Engineering Through Case Histories, R. Kerry Rowe Mar 1998

From The Past To The Future Of Landfill Engineering Through Case Histories, R. Kerry Rowe

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The advances in landfill engineering are outlined based on a number of case histories illustrating past problems, hydraulic performance of clay liners, diffusive transport through liners, hydraulic containment and clogging of leachate collection systems. The importance of conventional geotechnical considerations (e.g. stability) will also be highlighted with reference to a number of cases. Finally, the recent advances in landfill operations are illustrated with respect to a modern landfill. It is concluded that, provided all key failure mechanisms are considered in the design, construction and operation of the facility, modern landfills should provide environmental protection both today and well into the …

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie Mar 1998

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Man-made vibrations caused by construction activities, blasting, rail and vehicular traffic, and machinery can have an adverse impact on buildings and facilities, human occupants of buildings, and sensitive equipment housed within these facilities. Comparisons between vibrations are often difficult because of different methods used to measure, analyze, and interpret vibration data. To facilitate these comparisons, standard methods of selecting and mounting transducers, processing vibration data, and interpreting test results are reviewed. Specific measurement and analysis techniques and maximum allowable vibration criteria used for evaluating the influence of vibrations on humans, the potential for cosmetic damage to structures, and the impact …

Recent Experiences Of Tunneling And Deep Excavations In London, R. J. Mair

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper focuses on recent developments in tunnelling and deep excavations in London and it draws on the experiences of the Jubilee Line Extension project which has just been completed. A brief historical review is given of the first tunnels and deep excavations undertaken in London some 150 years ago. Construction methods recently used for bored tunnelling include sprayed concrete linings and closed face pressurised tunnelling machines. Ground movements observed for these various tunnelling operations and for deep excavations are reviewed, and their effects on buildings are discussed. The most extensive protective measure used on the Jubilee Line Extension to …

Risk And Reliability In Geotechnical Engineering, Suzanne Lacasse, Farrokh Nadim Mar 1998

Risk And Reliability In Geotechnical Engineering, Suzanne Lacasse, Farrokh Nadim

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Statistics, reliability analyses and risk estimates can be very useful decision-making tools in geotechnical problems. Yet the methods are little used in practice. The offshore and mining industry are at the forefront for the use of these approaches, having encouraged their use and sponsored research that has enabled the methods to be well-documented and of proven usefulness in the study of alternatives for design and decision-making in face of uncertainties. The paper presents a few case studies in different areas of geotechnical engineering and discusses the results that would have been obtained without the use of the risk approach. Special …

Seismic Design Of Cellular Cofferdams, R. Scott Steedman Mar 1998

Seismic Design Of Cellular Cofferdams, R. Scott Steedman

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Sheet pile cellular cofferdams (retaining walls) are robust structures, capable of withstanding significant deformation without collapse. Traditionally their use in the construction process has been associated with temporary works, but increasingly there is a demand to make use of this type of structure as part of the permanent works. However, although the design of cofferdams to resist static loads is relatively well documented, there are few examples in the literature of design approaches for seismic conditions. This paper describes the seismic design process for cellular cofferdams, drawing upon case histories in the US, CK and Japan. Comparisons are made with …

Barrettes Designed As Friction Foundations: A Case History, Chu-Eu Ho, Ching-Heng Lim Mar 1998

Barrettes Designed As Friction Foundations: A Case History, Chu-Eu Ho, Ching-Heng Lim

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper describes the performance of a fully instrumented test barrette subjected to an ultimate loading of 30932 kN. The load transfer characteristics were measured by vibrating wire strain gauges. Rod extensometers recorded the displacements at several locations along the barrette shaft. Test results indicated that substantial loads were carried in shaft resistance. The end bearing component was reduced by poor toe conditions caused by debris accumulation at the trench base. The load - displacement behaviour and factor of safety in barrette foundation design LS discussed. The toad test results of a subsequent working barrette confirmed that the performance of …

Bearing Capacity Of Footings On Compacted Sand, Alan J. Lutenegger, Michael T. Adams Mar 1998

Bearing Capacity Of Footings On Compacted Sand, Alan J. Lutenegger, Michael T. Adams

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper presents the results of footing load tests conducted on compacted sand beds to evaluate the bearing capacity and load-displacement characteristics of shallow foundations. Tests were conducted on square concrete footings with widths of 0.30, 0.61, 0.91, and 1.22 m and with embedment ratios (D/B) of 0, 0.5, and 1.0 to investigate the influence of footing size and embedment on the load-displacement behavior and ultimate bearing capacity. A description of the soil and test procedures used is given and the results of the footing load tests are presented. A discussion of the definition of ultimate bearing capacity and the …

Behavior Of The Underpinning Of A Building In Venice, F. Colleselli, G. Cortellazzo Mar 1998

Behavior Of The Underpinning Of A Building In Venice, F. Colleselli, G. Cortellazzo

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper examines the behavior of a building constructed in 1960 and subject ever since the end of its construction to considerable total and differential settlements in time. Monitoring of the building revealed an increase in the settlement rate during the first years of the 1990s, such as to require underpinning with micropiles in 1992. In the first part of the paper, the evolution of settlements until the beginning of the restoration is analyzed, and real and anticipated behaviors are compared. In the second part, the behavior of the building during and after micropile underpinning is explained. Back-analysis was carried …

Case History Of Two Building Experience Large Post Construction Settlements - Wilmington, Delaware, R. David Charles Mar 1998

Case History Of Two Building Experience Large Post Construction Settlements - Wilmington, Delaware, R. David Charles

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper discusses a case history involving two buildings which were constructed over compressible soils at a site along the Christina River in Wilmington, Delaware. The buildings, which were constructed in 1987, have undergone significant settlement of both shallow and deep foundation elements. As of early 1995, some of the pile foundations for one of the buildings were observed to have settled as much as 8 inches, while portions of the floor slab were observed to have settled as much as 9-112 inches since the completion of construction. As a result of these large settlements, the owner retained the author's …

A Case Study On Expansive Soils And Rocks Of Al-Khod In Northern Oman, Amer A. Al-Rawas, Mohammed Qarnaruddin Mar 1998

A Case Study On Expansive Soils And Rocks Of Al-Khod In Northern Oman, Amer A. Al-Rawas, Mohammed Qarnaruddin

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A case study of damage due to expansive soils and rocks in Northern Oman has been studied. Geological and geotechnical investigation revealed the presence of very stiff to hard silty clay with mudstone. Swell pressures up to 330 kPa, and swell percent values up to 70 were measured. Smectite (montmorillonite) and illite clay minerals were identified as being the main clay minerals present in the soils and rocks. A detailed investigation into the damage to the different building elements has been undertaken to study the mechanism of structural damage to establish the cause of such damage and to recommend the …

Cyclic Load-Induced Settlement Of Foundations On Clay, Braja M. Das, Eun Chul Shin Mar 1998

Cyclic Load-Induced Settlement Of Foundations On Clay, Braja M. Das, Eun Chul Shin

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Laboratory model test results for estimating the permanent settlement of a surface strip foundation supported by a saturated clay are presented. The tests were conducted with one model foundation and one clay soil. The model foundation was subjected to an initial static load, and then a cyclic load was superimposed on it. The magnitude of the static load intensity and the amplitude of the intensity of cyclic load were varied. Based on the model test results, relationships for the permanent foundation settlement and intensities of the static and cyclic load are presented.

Expansion And Rehabilitation Of The State Fish Pier In Gloucester, Massachusetts, Cetin Soydemir, K.M. Murtagh, R.E. Bertolino, Edward B. Kinner

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The State Fish Pier in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has been expanded and rehabilitated to provide an upgraded facility to support the local fishing industry. Expansion consisted of a new Finger Pier and solid fill extension of the existing pier. Rehabilitation consisted of replacing a deteriorated wharf with a new higher load carrying wharf. Subsurface conditions ranged from rock outcrops exposed at low tide at some locations to thick marine deposits overlying rock at other locations. Foundation support for the new Finger Pier and rehabilitated wharf consisted of concrete filled steel pipe piles, a portion of which had to he socketed into …

Experimental Analysis Of Large Lateral Displacement Of Piles In Centrifuge, Bouafia Ali Mar 1998

Experimental Analysis Of Large Lateral Displacement Of Piles In Centrifuge, Bouafia Ali

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Reduced scale model tests in centrifuge have been carried out for measurement of the ultimate horizontal load of a pile driven in dense sand. The construction of the load-transfer P-Y curves has allowed to analyse the response of the soil to the large displacements of the pile. The comparison between experimental results and those predicted by the current methods has shown the insufficiency of the theoretical approaches.

A Follow-Up Of Two Different Foundation Principles, Sven Hansbo, Leif Jendeby Mar 1998

A Follow-Up Of Two Different Foundation Principles, Sven Hansbo, Leif Jendeby

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In a special lecture held by the senior author at the Int. Conf. on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering in St. Louis (Hansbo, 1984) a follow-up was presented of the observations on two nearby buildings founded on deep deposits of soft clay according to different foundation principles. In one case the total load of the building is carried by friction piles with a factor of safety against failure equal to 3 while, in the other case, the load is partly carried by contact pressure at the raft/soil interface and partly by friction piles with a design load equal to creep …

Foundation Construction On Random Fill, Nasser Massoudi Mar 1998

Foundation Construction On Random Fill, Nasser Massoudi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Due to the high cost premiums associated with development on virgin lands, it is not uncommon to find new structures planned for construction over filled grounds. Such structures vary in function ranging from industrial facilities to public institutions. This paper presents three case histories related to construction or shallow foundations on random fill for a factory building, a public library, and a college building. The factory building was constructed partly over deep uncontrolled fill with little foundation improvement and partly over residual soils. The library was constructed partly over a randomly filled, abandoned quarry and partly over pinnacled limestone and …

Foundation Problems Of A Cable Stayed High Bridge And Its Approaches, Elias Sotiropoulos, Elias Alkalais Mar 1998

Foundation Problems Of A Cable Stayed High Bridge And Its Approaches, Elias Sotiropoulos, Elias Alkalais

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Evripos crossing project (Greece) consisted of: The main cable stayed high bridge with three spans (90m- 215m- 90m), two approach bridges with four spans (36m and 39m) and two embankments on soft marine deposits. The pylons of the main bridge were founded on cast in situ R.C. piles, 120cm diameter, embedded in ophiolithic rock or cretaceous limestones, base and skin grouted. Limestone cavities were identified by continuous recording of the borehole drilling using the Enpasol technique. A fully instrumented pile was tested for vertical and lateral loading. For the foundation of the two end piers of the high bridge …

Foundations Performance Of Large Diameter Tanks, J. L. M. Clemente, A. Desai, H. Senapathy, L. W. Young Jr. Mar 1998

Foundations Performance Of Large Diameter Tanks, J. L. M. Clemente, A. Desai, H. Senapathy, L. W. Young Jr.

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper presents a detailed case history of foundation performance of six 60-m diameter, 15-m high, floating roof fuel oil tanks and six 96.8-m diameter, 20-m high, fixed roof process water tanks built for a large power plant. Tank walls were supported by concrete ringwall footings. General subsurface conditions at the site are discussed, along with proposed site grading and the rationale for tank foundation selection. Because vibro-replacement improvement of site soils had been used beneath settlement-sensitive structures, there was skepticism regarding the decision to support the tanks on unimproved soils. To allay doubts about the adequacy of tank foundation …

Heavy Crane Foundations On Soft Clay, John R. Davie, Kenneth R. Bell, Mark B. Fitzsimmons, Daniel A. Haggerty Mar 1998

Heavy Crane Foundations On Soft Clay, John R. Davie, Kenneth R. Bell, Mark B. Fitzsimmons, Daniel A. Haggerty

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A very large mobile crane was used to lift a 3,150 kN steam generator through the roof of the containment building of a nuclear power plant. The maximum load on the crane was 19.8 MN, giving a track pressure of almost 600 kPa. Soil conditions were stiff clay underlain by softer clay. This paper describes the bearing capacity and settlement analysis performed to establish a suitable shallow foundation for the crane. The foundation load test confirmed that soil conditions had been adequately defined and that the foundation design was satisfactory.

Load Tests On Drilled Shafts For Highway Bridges, Raghu N. Dass, Vijay K. Puri Mar 1998

Load Tests On Drilled Shafts For Highway Bridges, Raghu N. Dass, Vijay K. Puri

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Most of the highway bridges arc supported on deep foundations. Safe and economical design and construction of deep foundations requires the use of rational procedures to determine the load capacity of the foundation. A static load test may be conducted to measure the response of a pile under applied load. Conventional static tests include axial compressive, axial tensile and lateral load testing. The purpose and advantages of load testing are explained in the light of large-scale construction of deep foundations for highways for the new millennia. This paper presents a case history of load tests on high capacity drilled shafts. …
