Effect Of Lunar Magnetic Field And Lunar Regolith Simulant On The Growth And Bioactive Compounds Production Of Chlorella Vulgaris Microalgae, Jeries Philip Butros Abedrabbo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Since humans last went to the moon on the Apollo missions, there has been a fascination with inhabiting and colonizing other planetary objects, starting with the Earth’s Moon, Mars, and recently Jupiter’s moon, Europa. However, there is still lack of knowledge and science behind many of the extraterrestrial environmental effects on biological organisms living on Earth. Therefore, there is a need to study how such environments would affect these organisms. Moreover, how can we attain sustainable living in such environments as well through self-providing life support systems (LSS), without the need to provide for additional necessities back and forth from …

The Aerial Refueling Asset Basing And Assignment Problem, Camryn E. Deames Mar 2023

The Aerial Refueling Asset Basing And Assignment Problem, Camryn E. Deames

Theses and Dissertations

With growing tensions in the European theatre and Indo-Pacific theatre, the constraints of aerial refueling impede the missions of Air Mobility Command and USTRANSCOM in their execution of both the National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy. Introducing and integrating semi-autonomous aerial refueling aircraft is a logical next step due to advantages in endurance, survivability, runway requirements, and fuel offloading capacity. This research frames the Aerial Refueling Asset Basing and Assignment Problem with two model approaches: a baseline model and a fuel shuttle concept model. Whereas the former model considers instances with only manned refuelers or only semi-autonomous refuelers, the …

Exploring The Effects Of Communication Delays And Personality On Stress During Simulated Space Missions, Shayan Shirshekar May 2021

Exploring The Effects Of Communication Delays And Personality On Stress During Simulated Space Missions, Shayan Shirshekar

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of communication delays and personality on stress levels during a simulated spaceflight mission. The study used an experimental, within-groups, repeated-measures design to explore these effects during a simulated Mars mission, specifically: (a) 1–3-second (s) (control) and (b) a 2-minute (min) one-way communication delay expected during the early transit phase of a Mars mission. The Big Five personality traits served as moderating variables and included extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. This study was developed and tested with participants analogous to an astronaut population: healthy individuals possessing or pursuing …

Assessing Impacts Of Decentralizing Airpower Command And Control, Allen Goodwin Peck Oct 2019

Assessing Impacts Of Decentralizing Airpower Command And Control, Allen Goodwin Peck

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Centralized control is a fundamental tenet of joint airpower doctrine, yet there are operational situations in which some degree of decentralization may be appropriate. The purpose of this research was to quantitatively assess the impacts of decentralizing the command and control (C2) of airpower under varying operational conditions. The research used the experimental method to test hypotheses regarding decentralization of control. JAEX, a stochastic, attrition-based Blue-versus-Red war gaming model, generated the required data.

The mean difference between JAEX outcomes under centralized control and outcomes under decentralized control constituted the dependent variable for each experiment. The independent variables were the operational …

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part I: Human Trust And Workload Model, Kumar Akash, Katelyn Polson, Neera Jain Feb 2019

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part I: Human Trust And Workload Model, Kumar Akash, Katelyn Polson, Neera Jain

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we establish a partially observable Markov decision process(POMDP) model framework that captures dynamic changes in human trust and workload for contexts that involve interactions between humans and intelligent decision-aid systems. We use a reconnaissance mission study to elicit a dynamic change in human trust and workload with respect to the system’s reliability and user interface transparency as well as the presence or absence of danger. We use human subject data to estimate transition and observation probabilities of the POMDP model and analyze the trust-workload behavior of humans. Our results indicate that higher transparency is more likely to …

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part Ii: Control Design And Synthesis, Kumar Akash, Tahira Reid, Neera Jain Feb 2019

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part Ii: Control Design And Synthesis, Kumar Akash, Tahira Reid, Neera Jain

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

To attain improved human-machine collaboration, it is necessary for autonomous systems to infer human trust and workload and respond accordingly. In turn, autonomous systems require models that capture both human trust and workload dynamics. In a companion paper, we developed a trust-workload partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) model framework that captured changes in human trust and workload for contexts that involve interaction between a human and an intelligent decision-aid system. In this paper, we defne intuitive reward functions and show that these can be readily transformed for integration with the proposed POMDP model. We synthesize a near-optimal control policy …

The Kentucky Re-Entry Universal Payload System (Krups): Sub-Orbital Flights, James Devin Sparks Jan 2018

The Kentucky Re-Entry Universal Payload System (Krups): Sub-Orbital Flights, James Devin Sparks

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The Kentucky Re-entry Universal Payload System (KRUPS) is an adaptable testbed for atmosphere entry science experiments, with an initial application to thermal protection systems (TPS). Because of the uniqueness of atmospheric entry conditions that ground testing is unable to replicate, scientists principally rely on numerical models for predicting entry conditions. The KRUPS spacecraft, developed at the University of Kentucky, provides an inexpensive means of obtaining validation data to verify and improve these models.

To increase the technology readiness level (TRL) of the spacecraft, two sub-orbital missions were developed. The first mission, KUDOS, launched August 13th, 2017 on a Terrier-Improved Malamute …

Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (Sunrise): Tracking Particle Acceleration And Transport In The Inner Heliosphere, Farah Alibay, Justin C. Kasper, T. Joseph W. Lazio Jan 2017

Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (Sunrise): Tracking Particle Acceleration And Transport In The Inner Heliosphere, Farah Alibay, Justin C. Kasper, T. Joseph W. Lazio

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The authors present a space-based array designed to localize and track the radio emission associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun. Radio emission from CMEs is a direct tracer of the particle acceleration in the inner heliosphere and potential magnetic connections from the lower solar corona to the larger heliosphere. These questions are among those highlighted in the Solar Decadal Study, e.g., “Discover and characterize fundamental processes that occur both within the heliosphere and throughout the Universe.” Furthermore, CME radio emission is quite strong such that only a relatively small number of antennas is required, and a small …

Small bodies in the Solar System, such as asteroids and dwarf planets, are ideal targets for electric propulsion missions because of the high delta-V required to rendezvous with these targets. We study trajectories to the asteroid belt, including a human mission to Ceres and a sample return mission to (216) Kleopatra, along with trajectories to the Jupiter Trojan asteroids. For the human mission to Ceres, payload masses of 75 Mg are achievable with a 11.7 MW nuclear electric propulsion system and an initial mass in LEO of 289 Mg. For low-thrust sample return missions to the main belt asteroid Kleopatra, …

Overview Of Instruments For Investigating Dust Interactions On Small Solar System Bodies By Landers And Rovers, Ryan L. Kobrick, Jeffrey A. Hoffman, Kenneth W. Street Jr., Douglas L. Rickman Jul 2014

Overview Of Instruments For Investigating Dust Interactions On Small Solar System Bodies By Landers And Rovers, Ryan L. Kobrick, Jeffrey A. Hoffman, Kenneth W. Street Jr., Douglas L. Rickman

Publications

Small Solar System bodies such as asteroids, comets and Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos have relatively unknown regolith environments. It is hypothesized that dust preserved in the regolith on the surfaces will have similar mechanical properties to lunar dust because of similar formation processes from micrometeoric bombardment, low relative gravity for slow settling times, and virtually no weathering because there is no atmosphere.

The Effect Of Diffusion On The Evaporation Rate Of Liquid Hydrocarbons Using Nanosediments In Lakes On Titan, Tyler M. Scogin May 2014

The Effect Of Diffusion On The Evaporation Rate Of Liquid Hydrocarbons Using Nanosediments In Lakes On Titan, Tyler M. Scogin

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has a "hydrological" cycle with hydrocarbons including methane and ethane in its atmosphere, and may be analogous to a frozen prebiotic Earth. Tholins created in Titan's atmosphere fall to the surface and interact with these liquid hydrocarbons. As a surrogate for tholins, nanophase silica was used as the nanosediment that interacts with the chosen liquids used to be analogous to those found on Titan. The effect on the evaporation rate of these liquids with and without the added silica was explored through 10 experiments.

This study assumes that the launch vehicles and precision Mars entry descent and landing systems, required for eventual crewed missions to the surface, have been developed, motivating the rapid build-up of a fixed surface base to enable extended human stays. During the time interval between the first successful placement of a heavy (between 20 and 80 metric ton) payload and completion of the baseline human-rated Mars outpost, it will be possible to utilize this large payload delivery capability to accelerate robotic exploration of the surface from the fixed base location.

One element of such an expanded robotic exploration program will …

The Rq-Tech Methodology: A New Paradigm For Conceptualizing Strategic Enterprise Architectures, Christine Ann Hoyland Jul 2013

The Rq-Tech Methodology: A New Paradigm For Conceptualizing Strategic Enterprise Architectures, Christine Ann Hoyland

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to develop and apply a system-theoretic based methodology and corresponding model for Enterprise Architecture development. Enterprise Architectures can assist managers by illustrating the systemic relationships within an organization and the impact changes to the organization could make. Unfortunately, today's modeling practices are proprietary, time-consuming, and generally ineffective as tools for understanding the consequences of strategic-level planning decisions across all levels of the enterprise. This research supports the conclusion that system-specific solutions produce islands of technology and can be prevented by employing better enterprise change planning.

This research combined the practice of Enterprise Architectures with …

Solar Warning Architecture For Manned Missions To Mars, James S. Bohren, John K. Howard

Theses and Dissertations

Solar radiation storms represent a dire threat to manned interplanetary space travel. Earth's current solar forecasting architecture is Earth-focused and insufficient to provide timely warnings to a manned mission to Mars, therefore a "best value" solar warning architecture must be identified. A total of 14 solar warning architectures were developed by varying 5 solar sensor locations, 2 processing locations, and 2 communications strategies. Using Satellite Tool Kit, performance of the candidate architectures in terms of Warning Time and Solar Coverage was quantified during a Mars mission scenario based on NASA's Design Reference Architecture 5.0. Cost of each candidate architecture was …

Spectral Characterization Of Venusian Surface Mineralogy, Johnathon Conley May 2011

Spectral Characterization Of Venusian Surface Mineralogy, Johnathon Conley

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

While the atmospheric chemical composition of the Venusian atmosphere has been characterized at length by probes and ground-based equipment, the surface mineralogy of Venus is not yet well understood. The extremely thick atmosphere of Venus shields the surface from direct observation. While radar imaging of the surface reveals surface morphology, surface composition is difficult to characterize at a distance. Observation is also difficult due to the intense temperature (approximately 480°C) and pressure (approximately 90 atm) found on the surface. This has prompted NASA and other institutions around the world to begin planning for new missions to land on the surface …
