Monitoring Groundwater Flow At Old Works Using Anisotropy, 3-D Electrical Geophysics, And Dem-Based Terrain Analysis, Yihaun Gao

Groundwater flow in shallow heterogeneous environments is often difficult to characterize using a single geophysical method. This study applies an integrated approach combining azimuthal resistivity anisotropy, self-potential (SP) measurements, DEM-derived terrain indices, and three-dimensional electrical resistivity tomography (3-D ERT) to delineate preferential groundwater pathways at the Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda, Montana. Azimuthal anisotropy analysis from eighteen 2-D ERT profiles revealed a dominant directional dependence in electrical conductivity, indicating a structural or sedimentological control on subsurface flow. The anisotropy results indicate a preferred conductivity direction of approximately 200°–210° in azimuth (0° is north), suggesting that groundwater movement is guided …

Urbanization in Eastern African cities has rapidly accelerated, placing immense strain on existing water infrastructure and sanitation systems. In Nairobi, this has resulted in spatial disparities in access to clean water and heightened vulnerability to waterborne disease risks. Recently, the concept of a digital twin for the built environment has received significant attention due to its potential benefits to urban planners, engineers, and designers. The development of tools that aid in integrating real-world physical systems with digital capabilities is essential for advancing digital twin technology. In this work, we present one such digital twin tool that integrates the longitudinal thermal envelope data of buildings on the campus of the National University of Singapore with a virtual 3D model. This work investigates stacked optics detection methodologies to successfully detect and identify observational systems with a cyber-physical sensing tool, ODIN (Observational Device Identification Network). ODIN successfully detected the presence of stacked optics and LiDAR systems using night-vision devices with a 96.32% average accuracy rating, both overt and covertly placed, with objective lens diameters ranging from 17 mm to 50 mm at distances between 1 m to 5 m with and without commonly employed anti-reflective countermeasures. With recent increases in incidences of political violence globally, the world has now become more uncertain and less predictable. Of particular concern is the case of violence against civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire between armed state or non-state actors. Classical methods of studying political violence and international relations need to be updated. The basis of this research is an investigation into the demand, costs, and emissions of a container freight shipping route from South America to the Port of Charleston, South Carolina. Ports and shipping routes play the most crucial role in the global supply chain, allowing people to maintain their standard of living. Once ashore, the delivery routes to five major metropolitan market cities were optimized for the lowest shipping costs for road and freight rail. Humanitarian projects in foreign countries are funded by the U.S. government to foster peace, prosperity, and the spread of democratic ideals around the globe. The type and scope of projects are restricted by current doctrine and funding regulations. Specifically in 2014, USAF personnel supported medical and educational construction projects/programs in the country of Belize. Within Belize, medical and educational projects were funded under the Humanitarian and Civic Assistance (HCA) program through the NEW HORIZONS exercise. The goal of this thesis is to explore the feasibility of a multirotor controller system which can dynamically change the arm configuration of a multirotor. Currently most of the multirotor systems have to be powered down, rewired, and programmed with new firmware, to configure how many arms/motors they use to fly. The focus of our effort is to develop a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based hardware/software controller which uses dynamic partial hardware reconfiguration to switch the arm/motor configuration of a multirotor during operation. The extensive use of ground water only began with the advances in pumping technology at the early portion of 20th Century. Groundwater provides the majority of fresh water supply for municipal, agricultural and industrial uses, primarily because of little to no treatment it requires. Estimating the volume of groundwater available in a basin is a daunting task, and no accurate measurements can be made. Applications deployed on cyber-infrastructures often rely on multiple data sources and distributed compute resources to access, process, and derive results. When application results are maps, it is possible that non-intentional imperfections can get introduced into the map generation processes because of several reasons including the use of low quality datasets, use of data filtering techniques incompatible for the kind of map to be generated, or even the use of inappropriate mapping parameters, e.g., low-resolution gridding parameters. For many practical applications, it it important to solve the seismic inverse problem, i.e., to measure seismic travel times and reconstruct velocities at different depths from this data. The existing algorithms for solving the seismic inverse problem often take too long and/or produce un-physical results -- because they do not take into account the knowledge of geophysicist experts. In this paper, we analyze how expert knowledge can be used in solving the seismic inverse problem.

A major trend in GIS is the addition of subsurface information to provide a 3-D perspective on data. Geophysical data provide information about subsurface structures and conditions, but require considerable analysis. The 4-D emphasis with the GEON projects has required the development of many sophisticated tools to allow users to utilize geophysical datasets that will be available on the GEON grid.
