Cyber Resilience Analytics For Cyber-Physical Systems, Md Ariful Haque

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are complex systems that evolve from the integrations of components dealing with physical processes and real-time computations, along with networking. CPSs often incorporate approaches merging from different scientific fields such as embedded systems, control systems, operational technology, information technology systems (ITS), and cybernetics. Today critical infrastructures (CIs) (e.g., energy systems, electric grids, etc.) and other CPSs (e.g., manufacturing industries, autonomous transportation systems, etc.) are experiencing challenges in dealing with cyberattacks. Major cybersecurity concerns are rising around CPSs because of their ever-growing use of information technology based automation. Often the security concerns are limited to probability-based possible attack …

Analysis Of A Full-Stack Data Analytics Solution Delivering Predictive Maintenance To A Lab-Scale Factory, Nathan Wesley Hoyt

Theses and Dissertations

With the developments of industry 4.0, data analytics solutions and their applications have become more prevalent in the manufacturing industry. Currently, the typical software architecture supporting these solutions is modular, using separate software for data collection, storage, analytics, and visualization. The integration and maintenance of such a solution requires the expertise of an information technology team, making implementation more challenging for small manufacturing enterprises. To allow small manufacturing enterprises to more easily obtain the benefits of industry 4.0 data analytics, a full-stack data analytics framework is presented and its performance evaluated as applied in the common industrial analytics scenario of …

Data-Driven Framework For Understanding & Modeling Ride-Sourcing Transportation Systems, Bishoy Kelleny May 2022

Data-Driven Framework For Understanding & Modeling Ride-Sourcing Transportation Systems, Bishoy Kelleny

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Ride-sourcing transportation services offered by transportation network companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft are disrupting the transportation landscape. The growing demand on these services, along with their potential short and long-term impacts on the environment, society, and infrastructure emphasize the need to further understand the ride-sourcing system. There were no sufficient data to fully understand the system and integrate it within regional multimodal transportation frameworks. This can be attributed to commercial and competition reasons, given the technology-enabled and innovative nature of the system. Recently, in 2019, the City of Chicago the released an extensive and complete ride-sourcing trip-level data for …

Framework For The Evaluation Of Perturbations In The Systems Biology Landscape And Inter-Sample Similarity From Transcriptomic Datasets — A Digital Twin Perspective, Mariah Marie Hoffman Jan 2022

Framework For The Evaluation Of Perturbations In The Systems Biology Landscape And Inter-Sample Similarity From Transcriptomic Datasets — A Digital Twin Perspective, Mariah Marie Hoffman

Dissertations and Theses

One approach to interrogating the complexities of human systems in their well-regulated and dysregulated states is through the use of digital twins. Digital twins are virtual representations of physical systems that are descriptive of an individual's state of health, an object fundamentally related to precision medicine. A key element for building a functional digital twin type for a disease or predicting the therapeutic efficacy of a potential treatment is harmonized, machine-parsable domain knowledge. Hypothesis-driven investigations are the gold standard for representing subsystems, but their results encompass a limited knowledge of the full biosystem. Multi-omics data is one rich source of …

A Machine Learning Method For The Prediction Of Melt Pool Geometries Created By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Jonathan Ciaccio

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A machine learning model is created to predict melt pool geometries of Ti-6Al-4V alloy created by the laser powder bed fusion process. Data is collected through an extensive literature survey, using results from both experiments and CFD modeling. The model focuses on five key input parameters that influence melt pool geometries: laser power, scanning speed, spot size, powder density, and powder layer thickness. The two outputs of the model are melt pool width and melt pool depth. The model is trained and tested by using the k fold cross validation technique. Multiple regression models are then applied to find the …

Holistic Control For Cyber-Physical Systems, Yehan Ma Jan 2021

Holistic Control For Cyber-Physical Systems, Yehan Ma

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are transforming industries through emerging technologies such as wireless networks, edge computing, and machine learning. However, IIoT technologies are not ready for control systems for industrial automation that demands control performance of physical processes, resiliency to both cyber and physical disturbances, and energy efficiency. To meet the challenges of IIoT-driven control, we propose holistic control as a cyber-physical system (CPS) approach to next-generation industrial automation systems. In contrast to traditional industrial automation systems where computing, communication, and control are managed in isolation, holistic control orchestrates the management of cyber platforms (networks and computing platforms) …

Intelligent Networks For High Performance Computing, William Whitney Schonbein Dec 2020

Intelligent Networks For High Performance Computing, William Whitney Schonbein

Computer Science ETDs

There exists a resurgence of interest in `smart' network interfaces that can operate on data as it flows through a network. However, while smart capabilities have been expanding, what they can do for high-performance computing (HPC) is not well-understood. In this work, we advance our understanding of the capabilities and contributions of smart network interfaces to HPC. First, we show current offloaded message demultiplexing can mitigate (but not eliminate) overheads incurred by multithreaded communication. Second, we demonstrate current offloaded capabilities can be leveraged to provide Turing complete program execution on the interface. We elaborate with a framework for offloading arbitrary …

A Hierarchical, Fuzzy Inference Approach To Data Filtration And Feature Prioritization In The Connected Manufacturing Enterprise, Phillip Matthew Lacasse Apr 2019

A Hierarchical, Fuzzy Inference Approach To Data Filtration And Feature Prioritization In The Connected Manufacturing Enterprise, Phillip Matthew Lacasse

Theses and Dissertations

The current big data landscape is one such that the technology and capability to capture and storage of data has preceded and outpaced the corresponding capability to analyze and interpret it. This has led naturally to the development of elegant and powerful algorithms for data mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to harness the potential of the big data environment. A competing reality, however, is that limitations exist in how and to what extent human beings can process complex information. The convergence of these realities is a tension between the technical sophistication or elegance of a solution and its transparency …

Approximation And Relaxation Approaches For Parallel And Distributed Machine Learning, Stephen Tyree Dec 2014

Approximation And Relaxation Approaches For Parallel And Distributed Machine Learning, Stephen Tyree

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Large scale machine learning requires tradeoffs. Commonly this tradeoff has led practitioners to choose simpler, less powerful models, e.g. linear models, in order to process more training examples in a limited time. In this work, we introduce parallelism to the training of non-linear models by leveraging a different tradeoff--approximation. We demonstrate various techniques by which non-linear models can be made amenable to larger data sets and significantly more training parallelism by strategically introducing approximation in certain optimization steps.

For gradient boosted regression tree ensembles, we replace precise selection of tree splits with a coarse-grained, approximate split selection, yielding both faster …
