Diffusion In Wide Grain Boundaries, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig Dec 1970

Diffusion In Wide Grain Boundaries, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The rigorous solution of the grain-boundary diffusion problem has been approximated by a series expansion method. The calculations show that higher-order terms may be neglected in the bulk adjacent to the grain boundary. Thus, in this region Whipple's and Suzuoka's solutions represent a close approximation to the problem. Inside the grain boundary, however, higher-order approximations have to be taken into account. These approximations gain importance in the case of wide grain boundaries. The solutions obtained for an instantaneous source have been fitted to available grain-boundary diffusion data of Ni2+ in MgO at 1200°C. Numerical calculations give for the bulk diffusion …

The Fe-Ho Binary System, G. J. Roe, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Fe-Ho phase diagram was determined on the basis of data obtained by X-ray diffraction, metallographic and differential thermal analysis techniques. Since emphasis was centered in the region where intermetallic compounds predominate, neither the iron nor holmium terminal regions were included in this study. Eutectic reactions were found to occur at 16.5 wt pct Fe and 875° C, 61 wt pct Fe and 1284° C, and 79 wt pct Fe and 1338° C. The congruent melting points of the compounds Ho6Fe23 and Ho2Fe17 were found to be 1332° and 1343° C, respectively. Two other intermetallic compounds were found, HoFe2 and …

The results obtained indicate that the apparatus may be used over a wide pressure range, corresponding to free molecule and continuum flow conditions.

A Simplification Heuristic For Large Flow Tables, R. J. Smith, James H. Tracey Jun 1970

A Simplification Heuristic For Large Flow Tables, R. J. Smith, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Flow tables specifying large asynchronous sequential circuits often contain more internal states than are required to specify desired circuit behavior. Known minimization techniques appear unsuited for reduction of such large (rows X columns > 250) flow tables, because of excessive computation and intermediate data requirements for problems of this size. The algorithm described here is intended to rapidly produce a simplified-but in general non-minimal-flow table. It is most economical when applied to extremely large tables and was devised primarily for automated design applications. The procedure has been programmed in PL/1 and has been incorporated into an asynchronous sequential circuit design automation …

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability Of Laminar Flow In The Entrance Region Of A Parallel-Plate Channel, Thomas Eldon Eaton Jan 1970

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability Of Laminar Flow In The Entrance Region Of A Parallel-Plate Channel, Thomas Eldon Eaton

Masters Theses

"The hydrodynamic stability of laminar flow of an electrically conducting fluid flowing in a parallel-plate channel with an applied transverse magnetic field is investigated. The linear perturbation theory of hydrodynamic stability along with the assumption of low magnetic Reynolds number is applied to the governing equations to derive the governing rnagnetohydrodynarnic stability equation. A finite difference scheme is employed to numerically solve the magnetohydrodynamic stability equation. Neutral stability characteristics of the flow in the entrance region are obtained and presented. The neutral stability characteristics of the fully developed Hartmann flow are also re-examined and compared with those of a previous …

An Sem Surface Study Of Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer To Saturated Liquid Nitrogen Reduced Pressures From 0.1 To 0.9, David Virgil Porchey Jan 1970

An Sem Surface Study Of Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer To Saturated Liquid Nitrogen Reduced Pressures From 0.1 To 0.9, David Virgil Porchey

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study constituted an examination of both nucleate boiling and maximum heat flux characteristics of liquid nitrogen boiling from characterized surfaces. Several textures of gold plated copper surfaces were studied in addition to silver and silver oxide surfaces. Data were taken over a wide range of reduced pressures. All surfaces were examined using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Data and micrograph comparison revealed that both surface chemistry and surface roughness affect the nucleate boiling characteristics of liquid nitrogen. These effects are separated from each other showing that nucleate boiling is a function of both surface chemistry and topography. Surface roughness …

State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey Jan 1970

State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods already exist for the construction of critical race-free assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits. Some of these methods permit the construction of many assignments for the same flow table. The algorithm presented here consists of two easy to apply tests which select that critical race-free assignment most likely to produce a set of simple next-state equations. The algorithm has been programmed. Copyright © 1970 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter Jan 1970

Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of AGc loops at the input and output of the FM link in an AM-FM telemetry system allows the mean-square transmitter deviation to be maintained near maximum value, even though data may be nonstationary. However, errors result because of the inability of the receiver AGc loop to track perfectly gain variations in the transmitter loop. In this paper the general characteristics of AGc are discussed, and a theoretical analysis is performed to determine the time constant, steady-state error, and tracking error for a first-order loop. Also, tracking error for first order and second-order loops is investigated by simulation. …

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau Jan 1970

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau

Masters Theses

"As the asynchronous sequential circuit has become more and more important to digital systems in recent years high reliability and simple maintenance of the circuit is stressed. This paper presents a fault-detection algorithm which will be applicable to most of the practical asynchronous sequential circuits. The asynchronous sequential circuit is treated from the combinatoric point of view. First the minimal set of states, both stable states and unstable states, sufficient to detect all possible faults of the circuit is found from the fault table. Then a test sequence is generated to go through these states. It is assumed that testing …

A Socio-Economic Traffic Demand Prediction Model Based On A Lumped System Approach, John Edward Thompson Jan 1970

A Socio-Economic Traffic Demand Prediction Model Based On A Lumped System Approach, John Edward Thompson

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to devise a method for predicting transportation system demand based on socio-economic variables of certain physical areas. This pilot study was performed utilizing traffic flow, but minor mathematical alterations could change the transportation system to urban mass transit usage demand. An area of uniform socio-economic characteristics can be delineated and the socio-economic characteristics isolated. Each area will place a distinct demand on some existing transportation facility based on those characteristics. The physical demand can be approximated by a theoretical probability distribution. Once this internal flow generation has been approximated by the frequency distribution, it …
