The purpose of this research is to design and implement an object-oriented discrete-event simulation system which supports hierarchically constructed players in a parallel or distributed environment. This system design considers modularity and portability so additional modules may be implemented to experiment with new algorithms for both partitioning and synchronization. A simulation system which meets these requirements was partially implemented on an eight-node Intel Hypercube in C. A desired goal was to maintain the functionality of the existing BattleSim application. MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) micromirror devices can be used to control the phase of a propagating light wavefront, and in particular to correct aberrations that may be present in the wavefront, due to either atmospheric turbulence or any other type of fixed or time and space varying aberrations. In order to shorten the design cycle of MEMS micromirror devices, computer software is developed to create, from MEMS micromirror device design data, a numerical model of the MEMS device. Lower-power designs are less expensive to produce, more reliable, and cost less to operate - factors which create a real competitive advantage. As a result, ASIC designers are demanding better ways to analyze the power of their designs.

A network of workstations (NOW) can provide an inexpensive and effective distributed processing platform. The purpose of this thesis is two-fold, providing a methodology for distributed computing on a NOW first, and providing a model to predict and monitor performance second. The Multiple Pool-Migrating Worker (MPMW) paradigm uses multiple job pools to divide up tasks and migrating workers to balance the work load. The MPMW paradigm is a quick and efficient way of implementing problems using distributed processing without extensive knowledge of parallel programming. This research develops an improved methodology (and corresponding code) for solving the time-dependent, three-dimensional Boltzmann Transport Equation with explicit representation of delayed neutrons. These improvements are incorporated in a modified version of the code TDKENO, entitled TDKENO-M. Specifically, these improvements are:

1. Incorporate the improved quasistatic methodology into an existing quasistatic framework. Specifically, include the flux shape derivative in the fixed source term instead of being neglected. Also, compute the point kinetics parameters deterministically by their inner product definitions.

This research demonstrates how acoustic emission (AE) data from flaw growth activity can be used to predict burst pressures in filament wound composite pressure vessels. Acoustic emission data were taken during hydroproof testing for a set of eleven ASTM standard 5.75 inch diameter fiberglass/epoxy bottles. Amplitude distributions were created using only the AE data up to 25% of the expected burst pressure to simulate low level proof loadings (thereby avoiding damage to the bottles). The bottles were tested at three different temperatures -- 32°F, 70°F, and 110°F - and hydroproofed using two different pressurization schemes and two transducer configurations. Moreover, …

Due to the rapid evolution of technology, future digital systems may not be able to read and/or interpret the digital recordings made by older systems, even if those recordings are still in good condition. This thesis addresses the problem of maintaining long-term access to digital documents and provides a methodology for overcoming access difficulties due to technological obsolescence. The effects of changing the blade tip clearances on the velocity and pressure flowfields within a compressor cascade were investigated in this experimental thesis. All moving endwall measurements were taken at a constant flow coefficient of 0.5 and tip clearances of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 percent chord. Hot-wire/film probes were used to determine the three-dimensional velocity vector components in various transverse planes - one upstream of the leading edges of the blades, three within the blade cascade and one downstream of the trailing edges of the blades. Metal matrix composite have potential in a variety of aerospace applications, but they should be better understood before they can be employed. Despite the many studies that have contributed to characterizing the fatigue response of titanium alloy MMCs, few have researched the residual strength. The purpose of this study was to investigate the residual strength and the frequency effects on the residual strength of an unidirectional laminate of SCS-6/Ti-6-4, a titanium alloy matrix based composite under tension-tension, load-controlled conditions at elevated temperatures and different frequencies. Existing sorption models often fail to describe grain scale sorption because of an inability to define the diffusion domain. A proposed improved model required testing to determine model validity. The testing method used a synthetic media of known geometry such that the distribution of sorption sites was known. Sorption rate data was obtained using batch experiments with the media. Data was used in comparison against model predicted rates. Fined sorption site distributions were compared to real distributions obtained by controlling sorbent geometries. The presence of an endangered species, the Pacific Pocket Mouse (PPM), in critical Marine Corps training areas aboard Camp Pendleton may adversely affect training activities that are crucial to meeting the Marine Corps' mission. Camp Pendleton must focus limited budgetary assets for live trapping surveys of the PPM in the areas of best habitat suitability and the purpose of this study was to develop a PPM habitat suitability map of Camp Pendleton. Suitability maps were developed by integrating expert opinion with the Camp Pendleton Geographic Information System (GIS) database.

Concurrent engineering approaches for the disciplines of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and electromagnetics (CEM) are necessary for designing future high-performance, low-observable aircraft. A characteristic-based finite-volume time-domain (FVTD) computational algorithm, developed for CFD and now applied to CEM, is implemented to analyze the radar cross section (RCS) of two three-dimensional objects, the ogive and cone-sphere. The FVTD formulation implements a Monotone Upstream-Centered Scheme for Conservation Laws (MUSCL) algorithm for the flux evaluation and a Runge-Kutta multi-stage scheme for the time integration. Broadband-Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), along with Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), were designed to meet the requirements of modern communication networks to handle multiple users and a wide variety of diverse traffic including voice, data and video. ATM responds to requests for admission to the network by analyzing whether or not the grade of service (GOS) requirement, specified in the admission request, can be guaranteed without violating the GOS guaranteed to traffic already accepted into the network. The development of increasingly accurate new aircraft navigation systems has caused the Air Force to develop a new Navigation Reference System to test them, called the Submeter Accuracy Reference System (SARS). The SARS is an inverted GPS system which consists of an array of GPS receivers on the ground and an airborne pseudolite mounted on the test aircraft. The SARS will provide a proof position estimate that is used to check the navigation system under test. Interference and jamming signals are a serious concern in an operational military communication environment. This thesis examines the utility and performance of combining adaptive temporal filtering with adaptive spatial filtering (i.e. adaptive beamforming) to improve the signal-to-jammer ratio (SJR) in the presence of narrowband and wideband interference. Adaptive temporal filters are used for narrowband interference suppression while adaptive beamforming is used to suppress wideband interference signals. A procedure is presented for the design and implementation of a linear constraints minimum variance generalized sidelobe canceler (LCMV-GSC) beamformer. Previous work on personnel airdrop problems involving jumpers has been (1) event-oriented entanglement rates, (2) number of canopy bumps, (3) landing injuries, and (4) deaths. The thesis expands this area of research by developing cumulative distribution functions of maximum possible chute entanglement risk for the C-17 using bootstrap techniques. By comparing the effects of various C-17 aircraft configurations on the entanglement CDF, this thesis shows that under certain configurations the risk of centerline entanglement for the C-17 is less than for the C-141.

By performing a statistical analysis on data collected from the Internet, this study sought to determine if designated characteristics of a university actually affect the bicycle transportation mode and helmet usage on college campuses. The focus group for this research experience involved bicycle commuters affiliated with universities in the United States. Through the establishment of a World Wide Web home page and on-line survey, the author obtained data concerning estimated bicycle and helmet usage percentages, and campus characteristic data from bicyclist responses. This study examined the effect of mild pressure gradients on the mean and turbulent flow of high-speed boundary layers. Three Mach numbers (1.7, 3.0 and 5.0) were investigated. Three pressure gradients were examined; a zero pressure gradient (ZPG), a favorable pressure gradient (FPG), and a combined pressure gradient (CPG). The CPG consisted of an adverse pressure gradient followed by a favorable pressure gradient. Conventional pressure probes, hot-wire and particle image velocimetry (PIV) were used to examine the flow. This research focuses on evaluation of various tools that assist in the selection of hazardous material substitutes. Substitute material consideration is a function of the Hazardous Material Pharmacy (HMP) when a hazardous material is requested for purchase and use in a current base operation. The substitute material decision is complex, involving identification of potential substitutes and then comparison of factors, such as cost, performance, and environmental effects, between the potential substitute and the material being requested. Routine cases in diagnostic radiology require the interpolation of volumetric medical imaging data sets. Inaccurate renditions of interpolated volumes can lead to the misdiagnosis of a patient's condition. It is therefore essential that interpolated modality space estimates accurately portray patient space. Kriging is investigated in this research to interpolate medical imaging volumes. Kriging requires data to be spatially distributed. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data is shown to exhibit spatially regionalized characteristics such that it can be modeled using regionalized variables and subsequently be interpolated using kriging. Future spacecraft technologies require advanced high-temperature thermal control systems. Liquid metal heat pipes are considered ideally suited for such applications. However, their behavior during microgravity operation is not yet understood. This study investigated liquid metal heat pipe performance in such an environment. Three stainless steel/potassium heat pipes were flown on space shuttle mission STS-77 in May 1996. The objectives of the experiment were characterization of the frozen startup and restart transients, comparison of flight and ground test data to establish a performance baseline for analytical model validation, and assessment of three different heat pipe designs. Despite major advances in design tools such as engine cycle analysis software and computer aided design, conceptual gas turbine engine design is essentially a trial-and-error process based on the experience of engineers. Modern optimization concepts, such as multidisciplinary optimization (MDO), and multiobjective optimization (MOO), linked with sequential quadratic programming (SQP) methods and genetic algorithms (GA), were applied to the conceptual engine design process to automate the conceptual design phase. Robust integrated computer codes were created to find the optimal values of eight engine parameters in order to minimize fuel usage, aircraft cost and engine annulus area over a given mission. …
