The Existence Of Multiple Equilibria In The Upfc Power Injection Model, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow Nov 2007

The Existence Of Multiple Equilibria In The Upfc Power Injection Model, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This letter shows the existence of multiple equilibria that arise from the use of the state model of the unified power flow controller (UPFC). These multiple equilibria can arise from a common power injection model for the same terminal conditions of shunt bus voltage and series active and reactive power injections. The multiple equilibria result in two or more sets of eigenvalues, some of which may indicate an unstable operating condition. Therefore, the use of the UPFC power injection model must be used with caution to ensure stable operation of the UPFC.

Discussion On Effective Control Of Inter-Area Oscillations By Upfcs, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow Oct 2007

Discussion On Effective Control Of Inter-Area Oscillations By Upfcs, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper discusses an effective method for damping inter-area oscillations in a power network using UPFCs. This two stage method controls voltage magnitudes/angles of the two sides of the UPFC based on a linearized approach, which in turn will command modulation amplitudes and angles of the UPFC. The method is compared to a one stage linearized approach which directly commands modulation amplitudes and angles of the UPFC. Discussion on the feasibility of the method and its relation to the steady-state operation of the UPFC is also addressed.

A New Battery/Ultracapacitor Energy Storage System Design And Its Motor Drive Integration For Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi Jul 2007

A New Battery/Ultracapacitor Energy Storage System Design And Its Motor Drive Integration For Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new energy storage system (ESS) design, including both batteries and ultracapacitors (UCs) in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and electric vehicle applications. The conventional designs require a dc-dc converter to interface the UC unit. Herein, the UC can be directly switched across the motor drive dc link during the peak power demands. The resulting wide voltage variation due to UC power transfer is addressed by the simple modulator that is introduced in this paper, so that the motor drive performance is not disrupted. Based on this new methodology, this paper further introduces two ESS schemes with different …

Steady State Formulation Of Facts Devices Based On Ac/Ac Converters, J. M. Ramirez, J. M. Gonzalez, Mariesa Crow Jul 2007

Steady State Formulation Of Facts Devices Based On Ac/Ac Converters, J. M. Ramirez, J. M. Gonzalez, Mariesa Crow

Here the analysis on the inclusion of a pulse width modulated (PWM) ac link unified power flow controller into a power flow program is discussed. Similarly, a PWM series compensator is connected to the power system to regulate the active power flow on the corresponding transmission line. Details of the Newton-Raphson's power flow algorithm are exhibited. Results of simulation are presented on a 39-buses power system.
