Models And Machine Learning Techniques For Improving The Planning And Operation Of Electricity Systems In Developing Regions, Santiago Correa Cardona Jun 2022

Models And Machine Learning Techniques For Improving The Planning And Operation Of Electricity Systems In Developing Regions, Santiago Correa Cardona

Doctoral Dissertations

The enormous innovation in computational intelligence has disrupted the traditional ways we solve the main problems of our society and allowed us to make more data-informed decisions. Energy systems and the ways we deliver electricity are not exceptions to this trend: cheap and pervasive sensing systems and new communication technologies have enabled the collection of large amounts of data that are being used to monitor and predict in real-time the behavior of this infrastructure. Bringing intelligence to the power grid creates many opportunities to integrate new renewable energy sources more efficiently, facilitate grid planning and expansion, improve reliability, optimize electricity …

Cloud-Based Machine Learning And Sentiment Analysis, Emmanuel C. Opara Jan 2022

Cloud-Based Machine Learning And Sentiment Analysis, Emmanuel C. Opara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of a Data Scientist is becoming increasingly ubiquitous as companies and institutions see the need to gain additional insights and information from data to make better decisions to improve the quality-of-service delivery to customers. This thesis document contains three aspects of data science projects aimed at improving tools and techniques used in analyzing and evaluating data. The first research study involved the use of a standard cybersecurity dataset and cloud-based auto-machine learning algorithms were applied to detect vulnerabilities in the network traffic data. The performance of the algorithms was measured and compared using standard evaluation metrics. The second …

Holistic Control For Cyber-Physical Systems, Yehan Ma Jan 2021

Holistic Control For Cyber-Physical Systems, Yehan Ma

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are transforming industries through emerging technologies such as wireless networks, edge computing, and machine learning. However, IIoT technologies are not ready for control systems for industrial automation that demands control performance of physical processes, resiliency to both cyber and physical disturbances, and energy efficiency. To meet the challenges of IIoT-driven control, we propose holistic control as a cyber-physical system (CPS) approach to next-generation industrial automation systems. In contrast to traditional industrial automation systems where computing, communication, and control are managed in isolation, holistic control orchestrates the management of cyber platforms (networks and computing platforms) …

Data Analytics And Performance Enhancement In Edge-Cloud Collaborative Internet Of Things Systems, Tianqi Yu Aug 2019

Data Analytics And Performance Enhancement In Edge-Cloud Collaborative Internet Of Things Systems, Tianqi Yu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Based on the evolving communications, computing and embedded systems technologies, Internet of Things (IoT) systems can interconnect not only physical users and devices but also virtual services and objects, which have already been applied to many different application scenarios, such as smart home, smart healthcare, and intelligent transportation. With the rapid development, the number of involving devices increases tremendously. The huge number of devices and correspondingly generated data bring critical challenges to the IoT systems. To enhance the overall performance, this thesis aims to address the related technical issues on IoT data processing and physical topology discovery of the subnets …

Towards Efficient Intrusion Detection Using Hybrid Data Mining Techniques, Fadi Salo Jun 2019

Towards Efficient Intrusion Detection Using Hybrid Data Mining Techniques, Fadi Salo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The enormous development in the connectivity among different type of networks poses significant concerns in terms of privacy and security. As such, the exponential expansion in the deployment of cloud technology has produced a massive amount of data from a variety of applications, resources and platforms. In turn, the rapid rate and volume of data creation in high-dimension has begun to pose significant challenges for data management and security. Handling redundant and irrelevant features in high-dimensional space has caused a long-term challenge for network anomaly detection. Eliminating such features with spectral information not only speeds up the classification process, but …
