Five High Performing Charter Schools Case Studies And Analysis: What Makes Them Successful?, Paul Haubrich, Robert Kattman, William Kritek, Julie Kremer, Alfonzo Thurman

Five charter schools were identified by high achievement (state-wide test results), high attendance, low turnover of students and staff, high parent and staff satisfaction and at least two contract renewals (met contract requirements) over a 10 year period. Four of five schools had 75% free and reduced lunch indicating low SES with minority population exceeding 80% enrollment. Each school was assigned a team member to observe all classes, interview teachers, school leadership and relevant staff over a 10 month period in the 2011-12 school year.

Results identified six elements across all five schools that contribute to successful schools. The variables …

The Leadership Practices Of Non-Traditional Students Pursuing A Bachelor's Degree: A Predictive Study, Michael Ammons

This non-experimental, regression study examined the relationship between leadership practices and academic achievement for a non-traditional student population. The study was conducted at a small, four-year private college in Eastern North Carolina. The sample consisted of N=146 (73 male, 73 female) non-traditional students enrolled in an accelerated bachelor's degree program. Volunteer participants completed the survey which consisted of the Leadership Practice Inventory-Self (LPI) (Kouzes & Posner, 1998) assessment and a demographic questionnaire. Kouzes and Posner's (2007) model of Transformational Leadership Theory is used to explain the leadership practices of non-traditional students. Its purpose is twofold: to review approaches to assessing and evaluating principals internationally; and, to draw on this review in developing recommendations for building a rigorous and beneficial professional certification system for accomplished principals in Australia.
