Lived Experiences, Migration Journey, Religiosity, And Spirituality Depicted In Drawings By Latino Children And Youth Crossing The U.S. Mexican Border: A Qualitative Study., Doroty Magalhaes Sato

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Widespread violence forces thousands of Central American children to endure a hazardous journey toward the U.S. Border seeking refuge. In the Latino community, faith serves as a social movement of resistance against oppression, playing a vital role in migration. There is a paucity of research documenting this experience and children's overall journey. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the lived experience of crossing international borders, religiosity, and spirituality depicted in Latino children's drawings used as coping methods to endure the journey toward the U.S. southern border. A negative correlation was found between teachers’ age and depersonalization. Six participants …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Computer-Based Instruction For Training Pre-Service Teachers In Simultaneous Prompting., Mary P. Elliott May 2024

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Computer-Based Instruction For Training Pre-Service Teachers In Simultaneous Prompting., Mary P. Elliott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been a significant increase in the use of distance education (DE) in institutions of higher education (IHEs) that is leading to a shift in pedagogy and practices. In the fall of 2021, approximately 61% of undergraduate students nationally were enrolled in at least one online course. A growing number of teacher preparation programs, including special education programs, are utilizing asynchronous course and program designs to combat the critical shortage of certified teachers, yet little research has examined which asynchronous teaching methods are effective for the development of critical teaching skills such as evidence-based practices. One asynchronous teaching method …

Cybersecurity Education Praxis And Broadening Participation In Cybersecurity: Pieces Of The Same Puzzle., Cynthia N. Thomas May 2024

Cybersecurity Education Praxis And Broadening Participation In Cybersecurity: Pieces Of The Same Puzzle., Cynthia N. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation study examined cybersecurity education praxis and broadening participation in cybersecurity in response to calls of action made by the government-funded National Science Foundation. The cybersecurity education domain has a literature base investigating pedagogical practices that foster cybersecurity learning. However, a gap in the literature is reports of cybersecurity learner perceptions regarding implemented pedagogical practices. Authentic research centering on the experiences of the marginalized and underrepresented identity holders targeted in broadening participation calls is also limited in the cybersecurity education research domain. As such, this study is positioned as a response to the traditionally compartmentalized approaches of praxis and …

Exploring The Mathematics Identities Of Urban Teacher Residents Using A Trauma-Informed Framework., Samantha Morris May 2024

Exploring The Mathematics Identities Of Urban Teacher Residents Using A Trauma-Informed Framework., Samantha Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) models prepare teachers to specialize in urban education. All teacher candidates, including those in UTR programs, have experiences and emotions that shape their mathematics identities. These identities can impact both the residents’ mathematics instruction and the experiences of their students. This study examines how residents’ mathematics identities developed as they participated in a Mathematics for Elementary Teachers (MET) course. To support this development, trauma-informed care (TIC) practices were embedded within the course. Such practices were designed to help residents process and heal from any potential mathematics trauma as they prepared to be teachers. This dissertation study …

Employing a mixed-method approach, a literature review was conducted, and a survey was disseminated to United States universities to gauge barriers and interest in incorporating STARS within the classroom. Results demonstrate that faculty at institutions with regular STARS submissions show considerable interest, ranging from …

Phenomenological Study Of The Impact Of Stress And Burnout After Covid-19 On Educators: Supporting Teachers In Resiliency And Facilitating Adversarial Growth Post-Pandemic., Rebecca Hicks-Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

COVID-19 has not only caused anxiety and fears among teachers for their own health and that of their families; they are also facing increased responsibility. Planning periods had been replaced with coverage periods, where teachers must teach other classes when their colleagues are out—often due to illness—because the supply of substitute teachers cannot meet the demand (Barton & Dickason, 2022). Teaching is a demanding profession, and there will always be stress associated with a job where so many external factors come into play (Hansen, 2013). However, in the face of adversity some teachers were thriving. They are showing up and …

Examining The Relation Between Behavioral Risk And Reading Achievement Within A Multi-Tiered System Of Supports For Middle School Students., Abbigail M. Long

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Academic and behavioral screeners offer a valuable tool to assist schools in supporting students with effective, evidence-based interventions as a part of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). Data from systematic screenings three times a year allow school personnel to respond at the first sign of concern, quickly meet student needs, and determine if some student groups are at greater risk for below grade level academic achievement or behavioral problems than others. This study used archival data to investigate the relation between risk level on the Student Risk Screening Scale— Internalizing and Externalizing (SRSS-IE) and the reading Measure of Academic …

No Tolerance For Zero Tolerance: Teacher Perceptions Of Restorative Practices, Meghann Ramsey May 2024

No Tolerance For Zero Tolerance: Teacher Perceptions Of Restorative Practices, Meghann Ramsey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The original design of zero-tolerance policies was meant to support school safety through an anti-drug and violence campaign but in the years following their implementation, school districts have employed them repeatedly without merit. Exclusionary practices have become controversial, leading to high rates of recidivism, imbalanced implementation toward minority groups, and the loss of learning while suspended or expelled. Just as effective educators respond and intervene to instructional practices that are not proving successful, an overhaul of disciplinary practices was necessary for academic and emotional health. Restorative practices have emerged in recent years as an alternative process to the antiquated system …
