An Investigation Of Emotional Intelligence Among African American College Students Enrolled In A State College In Florida, Wayne Brown May 2023

An Investigation Of Emotional Intelligence Among African American College Students Enrolled In A State College In Florida, Wayne Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the small number of research studies that have explored emotional intelligence (EI) in African-American (AA) samples (i.e., twelve studies, with six involving college students), the first purpose of this study was to describe conceptual and empirical dimensions of EI within a sample of AA college students (Research Question 1). To date, only one EI measure has been developed for use with AA samples, the African American Emotional Intelligence Survey or AAEIS (Funderburk, 2007), so the second purpose was to further explore the validity and reliability of the AAEIS (Research Question 2). The third purpose was to explore the …

Factors That Influence The Extent To Which Cities On Florida’S Atlantic Coast Are Preparing For Climate Change: A Multiple Regression Analysis And Learning Opportunities For Policymakers, Sheila Ann Young Dec 2021

Factors That Influence The Extent To Which Cities On Florida’S Atlantic Coast Are Preparing For Climate Change: A Multiple Regression Analysis And Learning Opportunities For Policymakers, Sheila Ann Young

Theses and Dissertations

This study involved a survey (Appendix A) to leaders of 158 cities inside the counties that border the Atlantic coast of Florida. The impetus behind this study was to identify how policymakers were obtaining, understanding, and sharing information about climate change in order to help inform the policymaking process about adaptation. We cannot only train students at the secondary and university levels about climate change and expect policies to change right away. Those students, for the most part, will not be in policymaking leadership positions for years or decades. What is needed now are strategies to address the climate change …

Socio-Critical Mathematical Modeling And The Role Of Mathematics In Society, Antonnette Marvlette Gibbs May 2019

Socio-Critical Mathematical Modeling And The Role Of Mathematics In Society, Antonnette Marvlette Gibbs

Theses and Dissertations

Based on the socio-critical perspective of mathematical modeling this research investigated a tool termed MESH (Mathematics Expressing Society’s Hopes) designed to stimulate reflexive discussions about the role of mathematics in society. Constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014) methods were used to collect and analyze data from 27 students enrolled in two college algebra classes at a community college in the southernmost U.S. state. The research questions were: 1. How does the MESH tool stimulate reflexive discussions about the role of mathematics in society during and after the technological, mathematical, and reflection activities, respectively? 2. How do students understand the role of …

Effects Of Spatial Ability And Three-Dimensional Interactive Computer-Assisted Instruction On Functional Anatomy Learning, Kelly Michael Moore Dec 2017

Effects Of Spatial Ability And Three-Dimensional Interactive Computer-Assisted Instruction On Functional Anatomy Learning, Kelly Michael Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of spatial ability (SA) and three-dimensional (3D) interactive Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) on college student academic achievement (ACH). The study was a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest, control group mixed methods design. Participants were assessed for spatial ability via the Revised Purdue Spatial Visualization Test: Visualization of Rotations (Revised PSVT:R), Yoon (2011). Participants were instructed to identify, locate and visualize human skeletal muscles and muscle actions. During laboratory sessions, control groups studied plastic anatomical 3D models and experiment groups utilized 3D interactive CAI. ACH was measured by the Human Skeletal Muscle Assessment (HSMA) difference …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Student Engagement To Alumni Giving At An Independent Technological University, Ali Faisal Aug 2017

An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Student Engagement To Alumni Giving At An Independent Technological University, Ali Faisal

Theses and Dissertations

Due to periodic decreases in government funding for higher education, higher education institutions have relied increasingly on philanthropic gifts. As a result, private funding, including alumni giving, has increased over the past halfcentury, climbing from $2.1 billion in 1965 to $57.48 billion in 2016 (Giving USA 2016). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of student engagement to alumni giving at a private technological university. The study examined this relationship using two data sets: National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) from this university’s Office of Institutional Research, and alumni giving data from this university’s Development Office. These …

Attitudes toward online educational courses were not significantly impacted by the age and locations of the participants. However, marital status significantly impacted the attitudes, where single participants were found to have a different attitude than married and divorced participants. Willingness to communicate with male instructors was not significantly …

Effects Of Peer Instruction On State College Student Achievement In An Introductory Biology Unit In Genetics, Holly Nicole Mcknight May 2015

Effects Of Peer Instruction On State College Student Achievement In An Introductory Biology Unit In Genetics, Holly Nicole Mcknight

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Peer Instruction (PI) in a state college biology classroom. Students discussed biological concepts in the area of genetics among their peers during class time. Conceptual questions were delivered to the student in the form of ConcepTests, conceptual questions designed to uncover students’ misconceptions in the material. Students first answered a question projected from the computer to an overhead screen on their own. Depending on the percentage of students that answered correctly, students then discussed their answers with their peers (PI). These discussions allowed students to uncover their misunderstandings in …

A Qualitative Study Of Florida Tech Graduate Teaching Assistants’ Response To Coaching, Video Playback, And Coaching Paired With Video Playback With Regard To Their Concerns, Self-Reflections, And Practice Of Teaching, Angela Marie Fennell Aug 2014

A Qualitative Study Of Florida Tech Graduate Teaching Assistants’ Response To Coaching, Video Playback, And Coaching Paired With Video Playback With Regard To Their Concerns, Self-Reflections, And Practice Of Teaching, Angela Marie Fennell

Theses and Dissertations

Florida Tech’s campus-wide GTA professional development training, the GTA Seminar, has no clear theory on which it was designed, employs only measures of satisfaction and open-ended feedback, and performs limited follow-up on GTAs. Further, two pilot studies I conducted indicate that GTAs’ concerns may not be fully addressed by this seminar. This is notable because the GTA Seminar is often the only means of professional development available to more than half of the GTAs on campus. The purpose of my study was to investigate 13 GTAs’ teaching concerns, self-reflections, and practice when implementing three professional development sequences during their assignments …
