Brewing Community: A Qualitative Case Study Examination Of The Campus Pub As Part Of Campus Ecology, Patrick Mcdermott

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the perceptions of the role of the campus pub through the lens of campus ecology theory. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with student affairs professionals at three institutions with campus pubs. Documents were also collected and analyzed from campus newspapers and social media at these institutions. Analysis identified several salient themes that support the understanding of the campus pub through the lens of campus ecology hierarchy (Strange & Banning, 2001). This convergent parallel mixed methods study with qualitative and quantitative content analysis was conducted to analyze and describe the cognitive complexity of the publicly released Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles Exam questions compared to the language of higher-order thinking found in research literature. Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix was used to determine the frequency and percentage of questions categorized as higher-order thinking within each cell of the matrix. This paper explores the impact of implementing the proctoring software Honorlock in the collegiate writing classroom. Through a framework inspired by Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism and Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, the investigation analyzes the efficacy of Honorlock’s attempts to reduce plagiarism and student test-taking anxiety when applied to preliminary writing assessments in Seton Hall University’s First Year Writing program. Institutions of higher education continue to struggle with retaining and graduating students within 6 years, and gender and racial/ethnic disparities are apparent. Only 60% of male and 67% of female students who entered a 4-year institution in 2014 graduated within 6 years (U.S. Department of Education, 2022). In 2022, only 27.6% of Black and 20.9% of Hispanic/Latino Americans between ages 25 and 29 have completed a baccalaureate degree (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023). For those students who entered college in fall 2017, Black students had the lowest first-year retention of 52.1%, and Hispanic/Latino students were not far ahead, with a 59.5% …

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how ten student veterans persist after entering private, 4-year institutions of higher education during or following their military service. The study’s conceptual framework, drawing from Vacchi’s Model of Student Veteran Support (2011, 2013), employs a narrative approach to spotlight the varied backgrounds and identities of the student veteran population. A narrative study was used to examine the lived experiences of novice teachers and their knowledge base of culturally responsive pedagogy and its implementation in the classroom. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews of 12 participants who completed a teacher preparation program. Through coding analysis, data was analyzed around the tenets of culturally responsive pedagogy and the impact of self-efficacy in its implementation. Although their knowledge about culturally responsive pedagogy varied, their responses illustrated the need for teacher preparation programs to provide a framework of uniformity and accountability.

This generic qualitative inquiry (GQI) explores experiential learning in higher education for students interested in law enforcement careers. Through interviews and focus group discussions, the study aimed to uncover insights into the perceptions and experiences of students engaging in a university student security program (USSP). The USSP allows full-time students to work as uniformed, unarmed paid employees of the university’s police department providing various law enforcement type functions. The research identified five themes that emerged from the data analysis: exposure, career development, training, leadership, and personal growth.

Despite a college degree being a prerequisite for economic and social mobility, many low-income students graduate at far lower rates than students from wealthier families. Existing research suggests that low-income students are more likely to attend college less prepared to succeed once they get there, experience financial challenges, have difficult navigating the complex higher education system, and have multiple obligations outside of their academic responsibilities, resulting in low completion rates. Researchers have examined self-efficacy among racial groups and gender (Richardson et al., 2013). Yet, the researcher is interested in examining factors that relate to Black males aspiring to and attending college and the role of self-efficacy in those relationships. Self-efficacy involves belief in one’s ability to accomplish goals (Bandura, 1997). Self-efficacy helps students see themselves as capable of achieving goals. The results of thematic analysis generated six themes with fifty-two supportive codes. Each theme was mentioned by at least six principals. Each supportive code was mentioned by at least four different principals. The themes were: high school objectives, college readiness activities, celebrating success, creativity activities, private schools' advantage, and barriers to college success. Within each of themes, at least one code indicated that the school prepared students in key cognitive strategies like critical thinking and creativity.
