Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses

Introduction: Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NCL±P) is characterized by a multifactorial etiology with both genetic and environmental factors playing a role in its embryonic development. Recent genetic studies have identified susceptibility loci and genetic variations in several genes that were associated with the risk of developing NCL±P. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of MSX1, BMP4, TGFβ3, and GSK3β gene variants with NCL±P in a casecontrol data set from Karaikal, India. Methods: The case sample consisted of 331 individuals who were diagnosed with CL (bi/unilateral cleft lip), CLP (bi/unilateral cleft lip and …

Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry 2020 Introduction. Genetic etiology of nonsyndromic orofacial clefts comprises many genes acting together. However, little is known about their interactions. The purpose of our study was to analyze associations of phenotypic subtypes of nonsyndromic orofacial clefts with combinations of four genotypes involving candidate gene polymorphisms. Materials and Methods. We analyzed a large dataset of cases and controls collected …

The Impact Of Cleft Lip/Palate And Clp Surgical Intervention On The Social Integration Of Adolescents In India, Mustafa Zahid

Master's Theses

Cleft Lip/Palate, a congenital orofacial anomaly, carries an incidence rate of approximately 1 in every 1000 births. In addition to the stigma associated with the condition, the varying levels of cleft severity might result in lower life outcomes which could include lower cognitive ability, physical and psychological well-being, social and behavioral outcomes of adolescents. This paper focuses on the social integration element of life outcomes, which is composed of the social inclusion and prosocial behavior of the adolescent. Despite the affordability of restorative surgeries, patients in rural areas of Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) such as India face accessibility and …

Exploring The Relationship Between Preadmission Factors And Dental School Student Success, Nadege J. Dady

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This quantitative study assessed the preadmission factor relationship to success at a graduate dental school. Preadmission factors are used nationally to assess student ability. There are concerns about the reliability of these factors in measuring URM student ability. 1,275 records were collected and assessed for those admitted between the years 1998-2009. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship of the pre admission variables to the continuous variable Dental School GPA. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship of the pre admission variables to the dichotomous categorical variables of Licensure Obtainment and Degree Awarded Status. Based …

Dmft And Its Possible Determinants In The Honduran Population, Patrick T. Cooper May 2012

Dmft And Its Possible Determinants In The Honduran Population, Patrick T. Cooper

Honors Scholar Theses

Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the dental health status of several communities in Honduras in terms of the DMFT index (decayed missing and filled teeth). Specifically the study focused on comparisons of the Garifuna (a maroon community in Tela) with the people of San Jose, Copan, and others who traveled from other regions to come to a medical clinic. These results were also compared to other populations of developing and developed countries. Through looking at each participant’s DMFT score, many possible correlations to oral health were explored including region, age, gender, snacking, tobacco use, and oral hygiene. …
