Problem Solving Ability: Symbolic Level Analysis In Chemistry Education Students On The Topic Of Chemical Equilibrium, Aceng Haetami, Elsya Febiana Fahira, La Rudi, Benjamin Laurentino Vaz
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This study aimed to determine the ability to solve chemical problems at the symbolic level of chemistry education students and to determine student responses to the Three Tier test question model. The method used descriptive. The sample this study were chemistry education students at Halu Oleo University with totalling 73 students. Data collection in this study was carried out using research instruments in the form of Three Tier Test questions and student response questionnaires to the question model. The analysis results show that 16.3% of students understand the concept, 60.3% have misconceptions, and 23.4% do not understand the concept.
Investigating Active Learning Through The Lens Of Student Engagement, Nicole Naibert
Investigating Active Learning Through The Lens Of Student Engagement, Nicole Naibert
Dissertations and Theses
Incorporating active learning into a course has been generally found to lead to improved student learning outcomes; however, not all students benefit from these environments to the same extent. Although active learning environments provide the opportunity for students to interact and engage with the material, whether a student decides to do so is completely up to them. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to begin exploring active learning environments through the lens of student engagement and relevant associated variables (i.e., self-efficacy and student perceptions). This was completed through three separate but related projects.
Project I focused on investigating flipped …
The Chemistry Laboratory Experience Of El Camino Students While In Emergency Remote Teaching Due To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shaun A. Cook
The Chemistry Laboratory Experience Of El Camino Students While In Emergency Remote Teaching Due To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shaun A. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
Future college environments, including those in chemistry, will entail flexible formats. The pandemic spurred appreciation of the need, and though it has largely passed, adaptability to multiple formats in the future has been a critical part of planning for a rapidly changing future. Experiences during the pandemic will guide pedagogical changes and practices in the future. At El Camino College in Southern California, the chemistry department provided varied laboratory instruction to students during Emergency Remote Teaching. Understanding the experience students had during this extraordinary time is essential. Students who took courses that had an online laboratory course completed a mixed-methods …
The Effects Of Activity-Based And Inquiry-Based Teaching Methods On Student Attitude And Perception Toward Geometry, Wade Hukriede
The Effects Of Activity-Based And Inquiry-Based Teaching Methods On Student Attitude And Perception Toward Geometry, Wade Hukriede
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This quantitative action research project evaluated high school students’ attitude and perceptions toward geometry before and after two units that were taught. The first unit was taught using a more traditional style of teaching while the second method incorporated activity-based and inquiry-based lessons into a traditional method of teaching. The students were surveyed by using a modified version of Bauer’s (2008) Attitude Toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory. The survey was changed to focus on the students’ attitudes and perceptions toward geometry. Survey scores in the subscales: interest and utility, anxiety, intellectual accessibility, fear and emotional satisfaction were compared through …
Technology-Based Culturally Relevant Chemistry Education (Crce), Mercy Adoma Fosu
Technology-Based Culturally Relevant Chemistry Education (Crce), Mercy Adoma Fosu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The relevance of chemistry concepts and principles remains a challenge for most students enrolled in college chemistry courses. Part of this problem is the disconnect with what students experience in their every-day lives, and how the material, specifically chemistry content is presented via textbooks, lectures, and laboratory teaching. Moreover, the teaching of general chemistry has traditionally focused on traditional, instructor-centric expository delivery of course materials, that treats students as empty vessels devoid of prior knowledge. Students prior knowledge and experiences are crucial in shaping their understanding of scientific concepts and principles. Even students with relatively low expectations for success in …

Moving from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered classroom creates a “teacher paradox,” because on the surface, the teacher appears to become the least important person in the classroom. But in transitioning from a “sage on the stage” to a “guide on the side” (while team teaching with a fleet of classroom computers), the teacher’s impact on the lives of the students is actually enhanced. How does one design units of instruction that are student-centered? Come and find out how one high school teacher has attempted to pull this off.

Administration and Staff Articles and Research
Chemistry is a difficult subject to teach and to learn at both secondary and tertiary levels. Major learning difficulties are due to the particular views of chemistry phenomena that in many ways contradict intuitive and everyday views of the learners. As a result, major misunderstandings occur when students try to comprehend chemical explanations within the framework of their pre-instructional conceptions. This paper describes research findings on students’ pre-instructional conceptions in the domain of chemistry and on attempts to guide students from their conceptions to the core ideas of chemistry. Rather than providing an overview of students’ conceptions in various topics, …

Funded by innovative programs at the National Science Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Richmond faculty in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and computer science teamed up to offer first- and second-year students the opportunity to contribute to vibrant, interdisciplinary research projects. The result was not only good science but also good science that motivated and informed course development. Here, we describe four recent undergraduate research projects involving students and faculty in biology, physics, mathematics, and computer science and how each contributed in significant ways to the conception and implementation of our new Integrated Quantitative Science course, a …

Effective Models As Instructional Designs To Build Student Motivation In Learning, Karla S. Lammers
Effective Models As Instructional Designs To Build Student Motivation In Learning, Karla S. Lammers
Graduate Research Papers
Effective Models As Instructional Designs to Build Student Motivation in Learning: A Review of Literature examines some of the research and academic literature related to successful designs/models that educators can use to build motivation in learners. Views of different motivations, extrinsic and intrinsic, as a learner are also discussed. Examples of designs/models are examined that integrate technology. The author concludes by presenting a technology-assisted, literature-based curriculum product that integrates these models to enhance learners' motivation.

A Study Of Critical Incidents Relating To Effective Instruction In Secondary School Physics, Chemistry, And Biology, Ernest Solomon Palmer
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is twofold. First, to compile a list of factors aiding in the effectiveness of instruction in secondary school chemistry, physics, and biology classes, and second, to determine whether or not these factors aiding effectiveness have elements in common. The problem will then be to characterize these common elements.
