182 - The Intricate Paradox Of Allyship In Collegiate Sport, Josephine Lewis

GREAT Day Posters

This research aims to explore how allyship is experienced among student-athletes. We conducted five focus groups to gauge first-hand stories of student-athletes who are members of culturally marginalized groups, as well as members from historically dominant groups. Specifically, the research focused on how student-athletes from various backgrounds attempt (or fail) to work together to jointly establish a sense of belonging on their collegiate sports teams. Using co-cultural theory and dominant group theory as theoretical frameworks, and focus groups as the method, the analysis reveals a paradox in how allyship is viewed between different groups. Such paradoxes included the themes of …

Public Diplomacy And Foreign Policy Analysis In The 21st Century: Navigating Uncertainty Through Digital Power And Influence, Amber Brittain-Hale

Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)

In an era defined by digital networks and geopolitical risk, public diplomacy is gaining traction for global leaders to address uncertainty. This paper investigates the use of decentralized politics in public discourse and its implications for leadership. Individual global actors have increased public diplomatic efforts as a focus due to political uncertainty, particularly since 2016. The case of Ukraine and its President Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's use of digital and public diplomacy in the conflict with Russia emphasizes the importance of looking at individual actor impacts in international relations rather than just states. The study should concentrate on how digital …

Approaching Language As A Human Factor In Aviation: The Challenges Of Pilot Language Training In The Academic Level In Brazil, Aline Pacheco, Tales Figueiredo Silva

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Language training for pilots poses challenges worldwide as the use of Aviation English entails a number of features portrayed from a Human Factors perspective. Language proficiency is imperative, as required by the ICAO DOC 9835 compliance. It should be noted, however, that a thorough comprehension of effective communication in aviation as a non-technical skill surpasses the particular understanding of issues in the linguistic level, considering that most of the participants in aeronautical communications are non-native speakers of English and the cultural features underlying the linguistic behavior. This awareness must be accounted in training programs, especially in the academic level, where …
