Two-Phase Hydraulics State Identification Using Linear And Non-Linear Time Series Analysis: Distillation Column Flooding Sensor, Alok Maheshbhai Patel

Masters Theses

A novel sensor to detect and predict hydraulic flooding in the distillation column was developed in this research. High speed (1000 Hz) differential pressure data sets were collected across distillation trays. The distillation column at University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) was the main research and demonstration site. The UTK column is 9 inches inside diameter, has 4 trays each of a different type not counting the reboiler. Many data sets were collected synchronously across the top tray (sieve tray) and across the next tray (bubble cap) from the top. Flooding always occurred on the sieve tray. To prove the application …

A Generalized Hamiltonian-Based Algorithm For Rigorous Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulation In The Nvt Ensemble, Joseph Gerald Leo Rajkumar Dec 2007

A Generalized Hamiltonian-Based Algorithm For Rigorous Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulation In The Nvt Ensemble, Joseph Gerald Leo Rajkumar

Masters Theses

Using a recently developed, methodical, Hamiltonian-based procedure, we derive rigorous algorithms for nonequilibrium molecular dynamic (NEMD) simulation in the NVE and NVT ensembles. We demonstrate that the equivalence of the kinetic temperature and configurational temperatures that exists at equilibrium is maintained in nonequilibrium states, given the proper nonequilibrium expression (in the microcanonical ensemble). Specifically, we apply the procedure to the p-SLLOD algorithm, which allows for rigorous NEMD simulation in the presence of an arbitrary, externally imposed flow field. The resulting algorithms are general in that they apply in the presence or absence of external fields in addition to the imposed …

Security Printing: Towards Hologram Printing, Sachin Ravindra Agate Aug 2007

Security Printing: Towards Hologram Printing, Sachin Ravindra Agate

Masters Theses

Today we are facing many situations where the genuineness of the products and documents is questioned. Counterfeiting the original products has become a business of few people, which result in the degradation of quality of products, loss of money and loss of faith of end user. To prevent such malicious act, security features are added in the final product. Security printing is one of those methods that help in preventing counterfeit products and treachery. There are many different security features, which can be added in the security printing. Apart from those features, an embossed hologram is also included in prints …

Theoretical Techniques For Determining Precise Thermophysical Properties, Mohamad Hadi Kassaee May 2007

Theoretical Techniques For Determining Precise Thermophysical Properties, Mohamad Hadi Kassaee

Masters Theses

Quantum mechanics (QM) calculations, coupled with statistical mechanics (SM), provide a means to obtain thermophysical properties from first principles. Because of the limitations in modern computational resources, many of these properties are obtained for isolated molecules. Despite this limitation, QM is still very useful for thermophysical property generation in an ideal gas reference state where the molecules are isolated.

In this thesis, a combination of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics calculations is used to generate entropies of aromatic compounds in the ideal gas reference state. This information is necessary for practical calculations such as the determination of the free energy …

Investigation In Applications Of Hydrolyzed Industrial Activated Sludge: Operation Of Unit Bx, Kingsport, Tn, Jacob E. Hutton May 2007

Investigation In Applications Of Hydrolyzed Industrial Activated Sludge: Operation Of Unit Bx, Kingsport, Tn, Jacob E. Hutton

Masters Theses

“Investigation of Hydrolyzed Sludge: Operation of Unit BX, Kingsport, TN” examines the treating of 15 weight percent activated sludge in a 1 ton per day pilot plant, Unit BX, with a lysing agent and heat to release the bound water contained in the activated sludge. The end-results were an assessment of the challenges for processing 15 weight percent sludge and collection of a product with water-like flow properties that is nutrient-rich suitable for the consumption by microorganisms (hydrolyzate). In addition to the development and execution of this pilot plant and examination of the functional properties of the hydrolyzate(total solids, viscosity, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Platinum-Based Multi-Component Catalysts For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Li Ren Jan 2007

Synthesis And Characterization Of Platinum-Based Multi-Component Catalysts For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Li Ren

Masters Theses

"In the thesis work, Pt-based binary, ternary, quaternary alloy anode catalysts supported on sonochemically treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized with ethylene glycol reduction of corresponding metal chloride salts. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for catalyst characterization. Cyclic voltammetry for methanol oxidation and CO stripping were used to evaluate the performance of the catalysts.

PtRu nanoparticles supported on CNTs (PtRu/CNT) were prepared under a series of pHs. It was found that the PtRu particle size, composition, and catalytic activity were all sensitive to the deposition …

Fine Particle Classification Using Dilute Fluidized Beds, Rajasekharan Pillai Annapoorneswari Jan 2007

Fine Particle Classification Using Dilute Fluidized Beds, Rajasekharan Pillai Annapoorneswari

Masters Theses

"The main objective of this project is to classify spherical soda-lime glass particles based on their size using a dilute fluidized bed system. The influence of inclined plates in the column, plate separation, plate inclination, and number of plates on the overall separation efficiency of particles will be investigated. The effect of column shape on the classification efficiency will also be assessed"--Introduction, page 3.

Cfd Simulation Of Contact Planarization, Shanti Vusirikala Jan 2007

Cfd Simulation Of Contact Planarization, Shanti Vusirikala

Masters Theses

"Semiconductor devices form the essential components of most electronic devices. The fabrication of circuit elements to manufacture these devices is done by a process known as photolithography, using photoresist layer deposition, optical masks, and etching. As feature sizes become smaller, higher optical precision is required, necessitating an optically flat surface on the photoresist layer. The surface of the photoresist layer can become uneven because of conformation to the topography of the layers underneath or a change in shape of the layer after evaporation of solvent. To combat this, Brewer Science, Inc. has developed a contact planarization process (CON-TACT®) in which …

Synthesis, Characterization And Application Of Pd-Pt Bimetallic Nanoparticles And Carbon Nanotubes Supported Nanocomposites, Guoqiang Ren Jan 2007

Synthesis, Characterization And Application Of Pd-Pt Bimetallic Nanoparticles And Carbon Nanotubes Supported Nanocomposites, Guoqiang Ren

Masters Theses

"A study on the synthesis of Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles and composition evolution of the alloys was reported. The synthesis followed a hot organometallic route, with Pd and Pt acetylacetonate as the metal precursors and trioctylphosphine as the solvent. The size of the Pd-Pt nanoparticles narrowed down with time and reached a final size of 3.5 nm in about 10 min. The alloy compositions evolved with time and reached the preset Pd to Pt ratio of precursors in 120 min. An atomic exchange process between the Pt-TOP complex and the Pd atoms at the nanoparticle surface was proposed to elucidate this …
