A Parallel Reality Construction Of War Among Joloano Muslim Survivors In Sulu, Philippines, Frede G. Moreno, Lea U. Laput
A Parallel Reality Construction Of War Among Joloano Muslim Survivors In Sulu, Philippines, Frede G. Moreno, Lea U. Laput
Frede G Moreno
The Mindanao conflict in Southern Philippines is a long-standing controversy that has eluded comprehensive solutions. Despite efforts of the Government of the Philippines (GRP) and the representatives from the peoples of Mindanao in undertaking peace initiatives, “the war:” continues. The establishment of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) as embodied in an organic law provided in the 1986 Philippine Constitution has not seemed to bring about the much-anticipated progress. Even with the so-called “autonomy” already in place to substantiate the clamor of the Muslims for self-rule in the Tripoli Agreement, conflict has escalated signifying unrest among the people. Instead …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Panacea community hospital in the Hot springs County, Arkansas is a big community hospital 52-inpatient beds providing medical. Surgical, mental health, pediatrics, Ob-gyn services and emergency care.
Of late there has been serious concern about the patient safety and quality of patient care delivered by the hospital. Close examination for the causes of the unsatisfactory quality of care and patient safety reveals that the hospital lacks proper and adequately supported risk management department. One employee only who is a part of the Quality Improvement cell sees the risk management program of the hospital and there is lack …
A Capacity Market That Makes Sense, Peter Cramton, Steven Stoft
A Capacity Market That Makes Sense, Peter Cramton, Steven Stoft
Peter Cramton
We argue that a capacity market is needed in most restructured electricity markets, and present a design that avoids problems found in the early capacity markets. The proposed market only rewards capacity that contributes to reliability as demonstrated by its performance during hours in which there is a shortage of operating reserves. The capacity price responds to market conditions, increasing when and where capacity is scarce and decreasing to zero when and where it is sufficiently plentiful. Market power in the capacity market is addressed by basing the capacity price on actual capacity, rather than bid capacity, so generators cannot …

Corporate Governance, Strategy, And Supply Management Performance: An Empirical Analysis Of Companies Listed In The São Paulo Stock Exchange, Wesley Mendes-Da-Silva
Wesley Mendes-Da-Silva
This paper examines whether the corporate governance structures of firms with diversified suppliers differ from those of firms with more specialized or concentrated suppliers. This study consists of multiple cross sections that cover the period between 1997 and 2001 and incorporates data collected from 176 industrial companies from fourteen industrial segments that listed stocks in Bovespa, the São Paulo Stock Exchange. This study based its exploration on the premise that minimized inventory and minimized days’ sales in inventory ratios define the best-performing supply management.

When Age-Old Wisdom For Life-Long Learning Becomes Innovative, Gloria Gordon Phd
Gloria Gordon PhD
The paper calls for a return to ancient knowledge left by our Kemetian ancestors about what it means to be human as well as the insights they gave about the purpose of human existence. The insights offered have the potential to provide a critical underpinning of educational processes designed for African leaders in the 21st century. The author shares her own vision for Africa, inherent in which are strategies for economic growth and poverty alleviation centred in the development of the African consciousness. The overall strategy for achieving this vision is identified as already laid out in the perennial wisdom …

The Effect Of Auburn University’S Business-Engineering-Technology Program On The Predisposition Towards Entrepreneurship In Business And Engineering Graduates, Paul Swamidass, Daniel Butler
Paul Swamidass
The unique Business-Engineering-Technology (BET) minor at Auburn University trains business and engineering students in teamwork and entrepreneurship. All eleven graduates of the first BET class (2003) and nineteen graduates from the second BET class (2004) were surveyed to assess their entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and abilities. Their responses were compared against the Auburn University norm for graduating seniors. The norm was developed using 254 responses from business and engineering students who were cohorts of the BET students. In this lock-step program, students design and develop three different products and matching businesses to exploit their products. Over the two years, they prepare …

Analogie I Metafory Źródłem Nowych Idei W Praktyce Biznesowej, Anna Ujwary-Gil
Anna Ujwary-Gil
Analogie i metafory stanowią ważne, jakkolwiek mało doceniane, źródło poszukiwania idei.

Value Creation In A Virtual World, Kieth R. Hales

During the past two decades, increasingly powerful and capable information technologies have made information more accessible and valuable so that it has become the prime resource for business; ahead of the traditional resources of land, labour and capital. Improved information acquisition, usage and distribution has also driven and enabled globalisation. The emergence of the virtual enterprise (VE) is one consequence of changed market conditions and advanced information communications technology (ICT). VE s are characterised by various configurations of networks of collaborating partnerships and intensive ICT linkages. As ICT has become more pervasive, businesses have become increasingly reliant on it for …
Free And Fair Elections, Riccardo Pelizzo
Free And Fair Elections, Riccardo Pelizzo
riccardo pelizzo
This chapter argues that the freedom and the fairness of elections are threatened by old and new (and emerging) threats. In fact, the freedom and the fairness of elections are threatened not only by political violence, intimidation and electoral fraud which can be regarded as the ‘old’ or ‘traditional’ threats, but they are also threatened by the absence of plural sources of independent information, conflict of interests and , above all, corruption

Houses Of Straw, David A. Bainbridge
David A Bainbridge
Straw bale building offers high performance at a low cost. Bale building, developed on the grasslands of Nebraska at turn of the last century, has been rediscovered. High insulation values and high interior thermal mass make straw bales a good choice for passive solar design.

The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, we explore the tension between the perspective of the free-trade economists and that of the labor advocates with regard to voluntary responses to the sweatshop dilemma. Second, we introduce and define the concept of positive deviancy and relate it to the apparel and footwear global labor markets. Third, we explain how moral imagination is one possible rationalization for this deviancy and then demonstrate how moral imagination may lead to the enhancement of norms in the area of global labor challenges. In order words, what are the root causes behind mistreatment of workers? …

Rethinking Regional Innovation And Change: Path Dependency Or Regional Breakthrough?, Gerhard Fuchs, Philip Shapira
Rethinking Regional Innovation And Change: Path Dependency Or Regional Breakthrough?, Gerhard Fuchs, Philip Shapira
Philip Shapira
Rethinking Regional Innovation and Change is an edited volume bringing together papers from leading international scholars in the field of regional development and policy. Contributors to the book examine the interactions between path-dependent developments, institutions, and governance structures in influencing regional innovation capacity. The invariably complex interrelationships between technical and industrial development paths and regional institutions are explored, using cases from both highly developed and lagging regions. The book offers an assessment of the extent to which regional innovative capacity can be increased by strengthening, re-orientating, or creating institutions and policies and examines opportunities for reflexive practice at the regional …

Globalization has turned product design upside down. Members of a single design team in multinational firms may be located in several countries such as the USA, UK, Italy, India and so on. It is a challenge to give engineering and business students a taste of this experience. Auburn University’s Business-Engineering-Technology (B-E-T) program, and the College of Engineering, University of Plymouth, participated in a joint effort to replicate real-life product design process with a mixture of engineering and business students. This paper describes the experience, its lessons and compares it with other attempts at multinational student design-team projects.

Materialism And Food Security., Michael W. Allen, Marc Wilson
Materialism And Food Security., Michael W. Allen, Marc Wilson
Michael Allen
The present studies examined if materialists have an elevated concern about food availability, presumably stemming from a general survival security motivation. Study 1 found that materialists set a greater life goal of food security, and reported more food insecurity during their childhood. Materialists reported less present-day food insecurity. Study 2 revealed that materialists stored/hoarded more food at home, and that obese persons endorsed materialism more than low/normal weight persons. Study 3 found that experimentally decreasing participants’ feelings of survival security (via a mortality salience manipulation) led to greater endorsement of materialism, food security as goal, and using food for emotional …
