An Evaluation Of Decision Tree And Survival Analysis Techniques For Business Failure Prediction, Adrian Gepp Dec 2005

An Evaluation Of Decision Tree And Survival Analysis Techniques For Business Failure Prediction, Adrian Gepp

Adrian Gepp

Accurate business failure prediction models would be extremely valuable to many industry sectors, particularly in financial investment and lending. The potential value of such models has been recently emphasised by the extremely costly failure of high profile businesses in both Australia and overseas, such as HIH (Australia) and Enron (USA). Consequently, there has been a significant increase in interest in business failure prediction, from both industry and academia. Statistical models attempt to predict the failure or success of a business based on publicly available information about that business (or its industry and the overall economy), such as accounting ratios from …

The Centrality Of Awareness In The Formation Of User Behavioral Intention Toward Preventive Technologies In The Context Of Voluntary Use, Tamara Dinev, Qing Hu Nov 2005

The Centrality Of Awareness In The Formation Of User Behavioral Intention Toward Preventive Technologies In The Context Of Voluntary Use, Tamara Dinev, Qing Hu

Qing Hu

Little is known about user behavior toward what we call preventive computer technologies that have become increasingly important in the networked economy and society to secure data and systems from viruses, unauthorized access, disruptions, spyware, and similar harmful technologies. We present the results of a study of user behavior toward preventive technologies based on the frameworks of theory of planned behavior in the context of anti-spyware technologies. We find that the user awareness of the issues and threats from harmful technologies is a strong predictor of user behavioral intention toward the use of preventive technologies. In the presence of awareness, …

Applying System Dynamics To Confront Complex Decision Making In R&D Systems, Arash Golnam, Nader Ale Ebrahim Nov 2005

Applying System Dynamics To Confront Complex Decision Making In R&D Systems, Arash Golnam, Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Research and development has always played a strategically important role in the survival and the growth of technology-based firms. R&D is positively linked to company performance measures such as sales, productivity and shareholder returns and in addition to this, facing increased competition, as a result of globalization the viability of many established firms is based on the efficiency of their R&D activities. Similar to other business models, R&D systems are characterized by complex structure and dynamic behavior. It's often difficult to predict or trace the consequences of certain decisions due to the existence of delays, non-linearities and causal feedback inherent …

Sorry, But It's The Law: The Westernization Of Islam, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis Jul 2005

Sorry, But It's The Law: The Westernization Of Islam, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

The last quartile of the 20th Century vastly changed the religio-cultural landscape of the West. Previously the stronghold of Christianity, the West has entered into a period of deep diversity as a result of the unprecedented level of migration of non-Western, non-Christian peoples to western destinations. These new immigrants, with their foreign cultures and unfamiliar religions, came westward with the full expectation that they--like the diverse array of Christian emigrants who migrated westward decades before--would fully enjoy religious liberty in nations long heralded for their commitment to democratic principles and respect for civil rights. How are these immigrants faring on …

Triple Bottom Line Event Evaluation: A Proposed Framework For Holistic Event Evaluation, Liz Fredline, Michael Raybould, Leo Jago, Marg Deery Jul 2005

Triple Bottom Line Event Evaluation: A Proposed Framework For Holistic Event Evaluation, Liz Fredline, Michael Raybould, Leo Jago, Marg Deery

Michael Raybould

Although there has long been an interest in measuring the economic impacts of events, it is only relatively recently that concern about the sustainability of event tourism has driven an imperative to develop methods for evaluating and monitoring other sorts of impacts including social and environmental. This trend mirrors moves in general tourism and business more broadly where discussion about triple bottom line reporting underpins a move for enterprises to be accountable to stakeholders, not only in regard to the economic bottom line, but also with regard to their “footprint” on the environment and on society more broadly. There is …

Testing First: Emphasizing Testing In Early Programming Courses, Will Marrero, Amber Settle Jun 2005

Testing First: Emphasizing Testing In Early Programming Courses, Will Marrero, Amber Settle

Amber Settle

The complexity of languages like Java and C++ can make introductory programming classes in these languages extremely challenging for many students. Part of the complexity comes from the large number of concepts and language features that students are expected to learn while having little time for adequate practice or examples. A second source of difficulty is the emphasis that object-oriented programming places on abstraction. We believe that by placing a larger emphasis on testing in programming assignments in these introductory courses, students have an opportunity for extra practice with the language, and this affords them a gentler transition into the …

Additivity Of Information Value In Two-Act Linear Loss Decisions With Normal Priors, Jeffrey Keisler Mar 2005

Additivity Of Information Value In Two-Act Linear Loss Decisions With Normal Priors, Jeffrey Keisler

Jeffrey Keisler

For the two-act linear loss decision problem with normal priors, conditions are derived for which the expected value of perfect information about two independent risks is super-additive in value. Several applications show how a variety of decision problems can reduce to the canonical problem, and how the general results obtained here can be translated simply to prescriptions for specific situations.

Over Qualified And Under Experienced – Turning Graduates Into Hospitality Managers, Michael Raybould, Hugh Wilkins Dec 2004

Over Qualified And Under Experienced – Turning Graduates Into Hospitality Managers, Michael Raybould, Hugh Wilkins

Michael Raybould

Purpose – This paper sets out to report on research that investigated hospitality managers' expectations of graduate skills and compared those expectations with student perceptions of what hospitality managers value. Design/methodology/approach – The research adopted a generic skills framework and data were collected through a sample survey of 850 Australian hospitality managers and 211 undergraduate hospitality management students. Findings – Managers rated skills associated with interpersonal, problem solving, and self-management skill domains as most important while students appeared to have realistic perceptions of the skills that managers value when recruiting hospitality graduates. The most substantial areas of disagreement came in …

Quantitative Coding Negotiation Processes, Laurie Weingart, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith Dec 2004

Quantitative Coding Negotiation Processes, Laurie Weingart, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

The examination of negotiation processes is seen by many researchers as an insurmountable task largely because the required methods are unfamiliar and labor-intensive. In this article, we shed light on a fundamental step in studying negotiation processes, the quantitative coding of data. Relying on videotapes as the primary source of data, we review the steps required to extract usable quantitative data and the lessons we’ve learned in doing so in our own research. We review our experience working with one large negotiation dataset, Towers Market II, to illustrate two steps within the larger research process: developing a coding scheme and …

Editorial: The "Measurement Trap", William Bleuel Dec 2004

Editorial: The "Measurement Trap", William Bleuel

William H. Bleuel

While I strongly agree that measurement in business is important, I also maintain that there is a degree of risk in taking measurements. I refer to this risk as “the measurement trap.” The measurement trap occurs when an executive believes that he can understand the business and customers in his market by increasing the number of instances of measuring aspects of his business and increasing the level of sophistication within his measurement system.

Pathologies Of Accountability: Icann And The Challenge Of “Multiple Accountabilities Disorder”, Jonathan Koppell Dec 2004

Pathologies Of Accountability: Icann And The Challenge Of “Multiple Accountabilities Disorder”, Jonathan Koppell

Jonathan GS Koppell

Accountability is a core concept of public administration, yet disagreement about its meaning is masked by consensus on its importance and desirability. This article proposes a five-part typology of accountability conceptions. Transparency, liability, controllability, responsibility, and responsiveness are defined as distinct dimensions of accountability, providing an improvement on the current state of conceptual fuzziness. The typology provides a vocabulary for the core argument: that conflicting expectations borne of disparate conceptions of accountability undermine organizational effectiveness. This phenomenon—labeled multiple accountabilities disorder— is illustrated with a case study. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is a nascent organization charged …

The Relationship Between Pre-Employment Expectations, Experiences, And The Length Of Stay In Public Accounting, M. Padgett, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, S. Hughes, C. Born Dec 2004

The Relationship Between Pre-Employment Expectations, Experiences, And The Length Of Stay In Public Accounting, M. Padgett, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, S. Hughes, C. Born

Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde

This study examines the relationship between work-family conflict, employment expectations, and length of stay in public accounting. Length of stay is modeled as a function of demographic factors and job characteristics associated with work-family balance, measured in terms of the extent to which the employees' expectations matched their actual employment experiences. Results indicated that gender, the presence of children in the household, flexible schedules, and the presence of mentors were related to length of stay in public accounting.

Despite an evident slowdown in major economies around the global amidst a sustained rise in international oil prices, the domestic economy surpassed its growth target by a wide margin for the third consecutive year, witnessing a growth rate of 8.4 percent in FY05, the highest during the last two decades (see Figure 2.1 & 2.2).

State led credit and savings programs have been implemented in numerous low income countries, but their success in reaching the poor remains widely debated. We report on research which exploits the policy features of the Indian social banking program to provide evidence on this issue.

Existing Knowledge, Knowledge Creation Capability, And The Rate Of New Product Introduction In High-Technology Firms, Ken G. Smith, Christopher J. Collins, Kevin D. Clark Dec 2004

Existing Knowledge, Knowledge Creation Capability, And The Rate Of New Product Introduction In High-Technology Firms, Ken G. Smith, Christopher J. Collins, Kevin D. Clark

Christopher J Collins

[Excerpt] A field study of top management teams and knowledge workers from 72 technology firms demonstrated that the rate of new product and service introduction was a function of organization members' ability to combine and exchange knowledge. We tested the following as bases of that ability: the existing knowledge of employees (their education levels and functional heterogeneity), knowledge from member ego networks (number of direct contacts and strength of ties), and organizational climates for risk taking and teamwork.
